Nixon
Yesterday, i rewatched "Nixon", film by Oliver Stone. He seems a tormented person. He lived beneath the Kennedy's shadow. If his government had merits because the approach with China and URSS, his conduction the conflict in Vietnam and his use of the state apparatus, for example, in Watergate, bring him very demerits. Finally, as J Edgar Hoover, is a character that deserves to be much analyzed.

50CC live game club
The 50CC live games club provides Gamestarts for regular and gunboat Diplomacy. It aims to make games which don’t suffer from dropouts. Everyone is welcome! PLAYERS WHO DROP OUT AT ANY STAGE OF A GAME WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO PLAY AGAIN!

Does anyone else have conflicts with the no-NMR rule? I use NMRs in live games all the time (and then SAVE at 0:01) to know exactly what my opponents will do. There aren't 50CC games during a time I could play, but there seem to be a lot of flaws within the club.
jmeyersd (4240 D)

is it no nmrs or no cds?
Sargmacher (0 DX)

List the flaws Geofram.
Skittles (1014 D)

If you save them, wouldn't that be moves received? All holds, but still received. Am I incorrect?
Sargmacher (0 DX)
29 Nov 11 UTC
With the 150cc club, there's a no CD rule - but not a 'no NMR' rule. I think that is probably what they mean here as well.
Sargmacher (0 DX)
29 Nov 11 UTC
Also, Skittles is right. Although, I do think sometimes players use an NMR tactically and purposefully.
Geofram (130 D(B))
29 Nov 11 UTC
Not entering moves but being logged on and entering all holds will show the same thing.

Ultimately the biggest flaw is not just allowing seven people to play a live game and if it turned out to be a good one, it was a 50CC game. The whole purpose is to get more live games going and have them be of a higher caliber eh? The more rules you impose, the less likely that's going to happen.

Also, a player isn't going to CD if they remain logged in, so how do you expect to cancel/draw games in those scenarios? Also, how is it fair if someone CDs right before you were likely to win anyway? Even then, these games don't happen nearly enough (nor do 150CC games) to make the threat of "banishment" hold water.

And there's no room for acts of disconnection that are out of your control? Internet loss and other emergencies happen to people all the time. Or is it going to be at Balaran's discretion? Which is another whole issue (as you saw today). The last thing this group needs is an administrator, it just needs more members.

So I guess my point is that right now this club has no point. The group thinks it's being selective in its live games when really its just ten or so players making it even more difficult to get a live game started in the middle of the day.

I haven't seen a 150CC game in ages. And it used to allow for anyone with a decent level of maturity to join. Now it's recruiting based on what? Which of the seven of you sticks around? You might as well already be in the 150 club.
Geofram (130 D(B))
29 Nov 11 UTC
You missed my point. I purposefully log out and allow the game to NMR me.
Then on the next turn, when my opponent expects an NMR, is waiting until the last minute he can to make sure I don't come back, I enter moves at the last possible second and take advantage of what moves he entered.
Sargmacher (0 DX)
29 Nov 11 UTC
"a player isn't going to CD if they remain logged in" That's rubbish. Not true at all.

As for sounding off against the idea behind the 'club', I think that's a bit churlish of you and I'm surprised that you would behave so. The intentions behind the club were good and honest - they weren't to be selective, they were to ensure good live games of people who intended to play a game through and adhere to a certain sense of class. Passwording live games gives them a greater sense of worthwhile and security for the players involved.

150cc didn't really work because too many people wanted to pick holes in the idea rather than support it.
Sargmacher (0 DX)
29 Nov 11 UTC
You don't need to log out to NMR. It's quite frankly shocking that you're a moderator/admin team and you don't know this.

To NMR/CD you simply don't open the game window and let a turn/2 turns time out without opening the game and registering your presence. Logging out is unnecessary.

I apologise to those who wondered why I logged off! The reason is this:

I have spent a considerable ammount of time and effort making this club from scratch! It has no real connection to the 150CC except that I agreed that the better players I discover could be promoted to the 150CC if the 150cc wanted them. I have set the rules, and been the arbiter of the games. There have been a few who don't like the way I do it, and feel that it is unecessary, but so far all the games I have run, have not had one CD. Those who have played in 50CC know that I check everyone out, and make sure they understand the rules etc.

Tonight I had spent 1 hour 15 mins getting players together, for a regular 20 point game, which involves messaging a lot of players I know who may be interested, and waiting for replies etc. It is a careful process to ensure we get a good game at the end of it!
We had 6 players together and Sargmacher hijacks this thread with his own link for a gunboat game which he called 50CC! I politely messaged him and asked him not to poach the players i had assembled. I also asked if he would like to join our game and be the 7th as I knew him to be reliable!
However I found that players had joined his game of gunboat and so I decided that my efforts are obviously not needed.
I understand that the gunboat game suffered from CD and was cancelled! Whoever the person was, would be banned from the 50CC if it had been a 50CC game. Maybe they didn't understand the rules! Maybe he should have been checked first!!

Yea I wouldn't have minded playing that out a bit, it was very enjoyable and could have got interesting. Couldn't a get a whole lot going offensively, but I held my peninsula pretty well.

A few communications but that's to be expected in gunboat :o

Thanks for the game evryone.

Balaran, you're not counting the games as 50CC because you didn't make them? Is this whole thing just so that you can handpick who you want to play live games with?
Sargmacher (0 DX)
29 Nov 11 UTC
"I politely messaged him and asked him not to poach the players i had assembled."

Balaran: Please, come on. Your message to me didn't even address me it just read 'hey don't poach my game! join mine instead if you want to play!'. That is hardly polite.

We've already exchange PMs about this and I thought we had reached an understanding. I'm not sure why you're dragging this through the mud. Again, as I said in private message, I really had no intention of upsetting you and really just wanted to get a fun game started. Sorry if this caused a problem. As for your game, when I logged on your game had already timed out. I can't do anything about this.

Forgive me but I think you need to calm. You said you've been playing Diplomacy since the 1980s-90s - this makes you much older than me so I'm sure you realise that the kind of tone in a number of your messages really isn't called for. As I have said already, I didn't intend to hijack anything. I didn't realise it was only you that could create fun live games for 50cc members - now that I know, I will refrain from doing so.

Kilgore- The attack was spectacular. The no move to black plus fleet build made me fairly confident in a jugger alliance, and I was in no position to defend it. Thereafter, I was just struggling to stay alive and do my best. Very well played.

And the same goes to the board. It was certainly an odds-and-ends gunboat. I think had it continued I may have been ousted but Turkey could have been stopped just short of 18. Not sure though, since the multi-lateral coordination of stopping a solo in gunboat is difficult.

Quite pleasurable. Enjoy your dinner Kilgore.

@Geofram: Exactly. This community is for everyone. Community clubs such as this should be for everyone. But right now, it's like Stalin at day care getting angry because the other kids aren't playing with the toys the way he wants them to.
I sympathize with Balaran here. I played in a 50 cc game and had a blast. I will play again. If I want to play a gunboat I will set my own game and try and not step on Balaran's toes. It is unfair to use someone else's intellectual property. Its like me making a Public Press live game and calling it "Sargmacher vs. Europe"
Geofram (130 D(B))
29 Nov 11 UTC
Lando, "50CC" isn't Balaran's property and if it is, this club might as well dissolve right now. They were two different games, seven people desired to play a quality live gunboat game and only six people desired to play a quality live press game. Boo hoo.
virtuslatin (130 D)
29 Nov 11 UTC
Agreed. As this thread demonstrates, I too set up a 50-cc game unaware of Balarans intentions. I did check the resign record of people I sent the pw to, but I will not do so again absent Balaran's permission.

Speaking of, Balaran, since you are off-line for the next couple of days, mind if I do so, or at least advertise on this thread? The second game seemed to work quite well.
Sargmacher (0 DX)
29 Nov 11 UTC
Lol Lando. I totally take that point and I have already apologised enough for this now - I really didn't mean to step on anyone's toes (as I have already said). In fact, I have already exchanged messages with Balaran about this and thought we had reached an understanding. This doesn't need to carry on and it doesn't need more people chiming in to add the two cents - the issue is dead as far as I'm concerned.

And Balaran, please stop sending me offensive messages in private. If you want to talk on this anymore please just do it here. I have explained enough - if you want to rant, don't spam my personal messages.
Balaran (0 DX)

@Geofram If you don't like the club I have created for whatever reason that is your perogative. But why be so negative towards it?
All I have tried to do is create an enviroment which is free of civil disorder! So far I have done this! All the games I started have completed with not even an nmr let alone a CD. I have also educated a few players who are regular CD'ers to not do it. Is this bad for the site?
The no nmr rule is not a no nmr rule! Try reading the rules before critisising them! The rule is for no CD's!
If you don't like the way I am running 50CC then I understand that it is a free world and you are quite welcome to make your own club with whatever rules you like. Rest assured that if you do I will respect your effort and not critisise it. In the mean time please respect the work I am doing to try an better the site.
Before I started the 50CC games, over 50% of the listed games I had joined, suffered from at least 1 CD a game! I made the club so that I could get a decent game whilst building something that might do the site some good.

If my efforts aren't required by yourself, the othe mods and Kestas then I will go play elsewhere! Just let me know though, so that I don't waste anymore of my time!
Sargmacher (0 DX)
29 Nov 11 UTC
@Lando: And anyway - I still don't really agree with your point. When Damian, aoe3rules, and I set up the 150cc it wasn't so that we could dictate to everyone else - it was to spearhead an outlet for everyone to use. It seems odd to create something and then only have one person be allowed to use it. What if 10 other regulars of this 'club' are on but Balaran isn't...they can't create a 50cc game? That's pathetic. If there is a resource then everyone should be able to use it - otherwise what's the point in making it public. The 50cc in effect becomes a glorified invitational series for Balaran.
