Shylock and The Merchant of Venice
Ok, I would like to open up a debate on Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice and its presentation of Jews through the character Shylock.
Some say the play is anti-semitic.
Some say it is a plea for tolerance.
I would like to read it as the latter and would be happy to give my thoughts on why but first - what do others think?

What is 'natural'?
There have been some arguments and discussions in the forum about what is and what is not natural, particularly in the case of homosexual instincts in human beings and animals. Can we find a consensus on what 'natural' constitutes or can we not escape the fact that 'natural' is in part a socially-constructed concept?

Is, for example, homosexuality any less natural than masturbation?

"I wonder what ppl in other countries picture when they think, "American."

Well, that's it. I think 'nationalism' is perhaps the only agreed upon trait. And increasingly religious extremism/'fundamentalism' - as it's encroaching so much into the American mainstream.

I would argue that the view of what defines America changes dramatically in accordance with who is in the White House. In the Bush years, Americans were generally viewed by 'the rest of the world' as anything involving: stupid, obnoxious, loud, self-righteous, ignorant. The Obama years have vastly improved upon those adjectives.

Yeah I was just surprised at the rapidity of the change in polarity on both ends.

You just don't see that too often.

Sucks that we are perceived as fundies. This is a VERY divided nation in that regard. Stupid, obnoxious, loud, self-righteous, ignorant... yeah I feel those are pretty much universal, Obama or no :P

This empire is set for a fall, and I'm sad to say I think it's going to happen in my lifetime.

I think World War 3 will happen in my lifetime.

Don't be sad YJ, if it happens, it happens. Best to get on with life until then.

What we need is another WebDip fundraiser. With all the money we'll buy a bunker and hide out when religious fundies take over America and/or World War 3 kicks off.

We'll fill the bunker with beer and Diplomacy boards, Draugnar will bring his females, and everyone will be happy.

Haha what do you see being the WW3 scenario?

China and US buildup over Korea is the only plausible one I can think of atm.

America and israel vs the entire middle east (+Russia?) is also a possibility?

Still I don't think Europe is going to get involved in any of that bullshit, though tbh I don't know much about the politics there.
Sargmacher (0 DX)
18 Mar 12 UTC
Yes, American/Europe/Israel vs the Middle East + Russia. Exactly.

It will all come down to oil, as it increasingly has been doing for the last 20-30 years. As the oil supplies start to get worrying depleted within the next 10-20 years and prices have rocketed so high that the middle classes cannot afford fuel, international politics will become increasingly tense. All it would need would be for the OPEC countries - almost all of which, let's face it, are countries highly hostile to and antagonized by American foreign policy and cultural politics - to halt exports to America and Europe.
If this happened, at a time when oil prices were extremely high, it would be very difficult for Europe and America to keep their economies going at the same time as mobilising their armies (which heavily rely on fuel: planes, tanks, etc). The Middle East would only have to wait 12 months after banning exports to the west before it could launch an attack and the West would be virtually paralysed.
WW3?

ahahahahahahahahaha howaboutno.jpg
Sargmacher (0 DX)

And the situation I've outlined above will be even harder for the West to deal with after so many years of austerity.

At the same time, Middle Eastern countries and Russia are feeding off the increasingly high oil and gas prices that allow them to buy military arms and equipment from countries like the US, France, and Great Britain - all of whom desperately want to sell arms so that they can pay for their expensive welfare states - which are not a concern for countries like Russia and Saudi Arabi who rule by oppression.

That's just not true. Intellectuals disdain Americans. Working classes revile them.

I think america has at least a years worth of oil reserves for our military, maybe more?

And we do have oil reserves of our own. I don't think the ME cutting us off would paralyze us really (though we would probably go to war over it).
Sargmacher (0 DX)
18 Mar 12 UTC
Oh well of course people love the American in Australia. Australians know that America is the only thing that stands between them and China - a country whose population are increasingly invading your homeland through peaceful means.

"I think america has at least a years worth of oil reserves for our military, maybe more?

EXACTLY! You have a year's worth. A war to guarantee would clearly take more than a year. And mobilizing for such a war would not be done quickly. If in 10 years the OPEC nations decided to stop exporting to the US and Europe, there wouldn't be much they could do right now.

Lol, at this point we are more in danger of being overrun by sheepfuck-er Kiwis than Chinese immigrants. New Zealanders aren't even counted by immigration stats cuz there's just too damn many of them.

Not exactly, but yeah it is really easy to go from one to the other.
"Oh well of course people love the American in Australia. Australians know that America is the only thing that stands between them and China - a country whose population are increasingly invading your homeland through peaceful means."

Oh no, they're invading us. Without those immigrants we wouldn't have enough population. We need those immigrants to keep shit running. Plus, most of them are educated to a reasonable degree and have learnt English better than most US immigrants I've seen in Australia.

Oh don't believe the stuff they're telling you, dD_Shock. Those Chinese immis in Australia are just the prep group for the full invasion. It's Elders of Zion all over again - that's why the Chinese baby boomed, all part of the plan.
Ok, I can see you're joking now. It's just what you said the first time is typical of what some douche American would say as though they're infinitely superior to us, and as though we need protection from our biggest trade partner.
"This empire is set for a fall, and I'm sad to say I think it's going to happen in my lifetime."

Couldn't agree more. I'm just wondering which one of your problems that you've set up for yourself will kill you. I'm placing bets on China, who owns a majority of your business shares, will simply fold every single company in the USA simultaneously, legally and peacefully destroying it. (Especially since the government continues making everything privately run and removes all public services at a rapid rate)
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
18 Mar 12 UTC
Shocker that seems to me to be highly unlikely.

First off, correct me if I'm ignorant but I really don't think China owns a majority of our business shares. A fairly sizable minority, probably, but not a majority.

Even if they do own a majority and just "folded" everything they own the government would intervene to see that the businesses keep producing. There's no shortage of American capitalists that would eagerly scoop those businesses back up at a cut rate.

<sigh...gasp....cough cough...> I'm bored....
Bored.....bored........borrrrrred.........my work is borrrrrring today. I'm B-o-r-e-d. I am bored. If I had the ability to predict the future, I would have told myself, "today will be boring, and you WILL be bored." Note the emphasis...it was applied because I am so mind-numbingly bored. I'm unmotivated to do anything productive, which is most likely a result of being bored.

I've been donating money to the Invisible Children fund for a while now, but how did you all find out about Joseph Kony? I think that there is something seriously wrong with how badly people distort public interest on the internet. Advice/ Help Requested on a Paper
I am currently writing a paper that requires me to debunk a psychoanalytic analysis of the Iliad. There is no trouble finding specific perversions of the poem, in fact, it's disappointingly easy. My difficulty is in showing that, the main problem with applying a psychoanalytical model is that you can make it say anything.
