I'm aware of that Putin. You're very right in that I'm a realist :) But you assume that even once the deterrent is in place, the West will act with aggressive intent, whereas we know there is 1) No political will to do that and 2) No way in hell we have the capability to do that.
It was more symbolic than anything. The US's allies are losing faith in our ability and will to protect them, and that was supposed to be a major reassurance. Israel was ready to conduct strikes against Iran by themselves, the Arab States have gone on to fund the rebellion in Syria on their own, and Japan is looking to amend its constitution to expand its military capacity. When the United States loses its absolute supremacy, the world destabilizes, and we're beginning to see the consequences of that. The standoff in the East China Sea, the conflict in the Middle East and now with Ukraine are just going to grow and get worse. The only way to stop it is to have some power come in and control one side and threaten to kick the ass of the other. I'm not saying it has to be the US. I'd love for it to be the UN, actually, but there needs to be some greater power than can step in during these conflicts.
I've more than digressed now, so please ignore my off-topic rant. I don't want to derail the conversation
