Unions
Can anyone explain to me why I'm strongarmed into paying a bunch of highway robbers ~5% of my teaching salary? As far as I can tell, the only thing my union has ever done is prevent me from negotiating my own salary. Thanks for that.

It damned near fucking *impossible* to dislodge a union. Putin's a fucking disingenuous piece of shit.

"You have to get signatures from 30% of your bargaining unit and then hold an election. "

Yeah...let's see a a group of average workers rise upon against the highly-paid, under-worked "union stewards" and bosses...you know, the union elite that get well compensated for doing shit just because they have been their longer and stroked the previous union boss's cock to get promoted.

Let's see the workers rise up against their Union Boss Overlords and decertify the union. We'll see how long their car's tires stay inflated...how long it is before they get moved to all the shit jobs and driven out.

But hey....Putin's Daddy was union boss thug...he's got the scabs on his knees to prove he earned his promotion. That explains a lot about Puttybaby's own peccadilloes...
Jamiet99uk (808 D)
13 Feb 14 UTC
@ Putin: "The decertification process is somewhat complicated and doesn't happen regularly. Because you can only do it 90 days before a contract ends or after it expires."

I remain mystified. What contract? The contract between the union and its members? Each individual worker's contract of employment? Some other contract between some other parties?
Draugnar (0 DX)
13 Feb 14 UTC
Unions have contracts with the companies they are in. That's the contract to which Putin refers.
Draugnar (0 DX)
13 Feb 14 UTC
Unions here are political organizations that strong arm companies by refusing to work when the contract with the company is up for renewal or any time they feel the company isn't paying them enough. Doesn't matter if the company is going to fold as a result of their new deal or not.
krellin (80 DX)
13 Feb 14 UTC
The point is, to organize a vote to decertify, you are going to need the organization to cooperate...i.e. Puttybaby's scar-kneed pappy would have to willingly assist in the organization of a vote that could potentially lose him his comfy, overpaid, do-nothing, corporate lap-dog union "leadership" position. fat fucking chance.
Putin33 (111 D)
13 Feb 14 UTC
"What contract?"

The labor contract between the employer and the union. You can't simply nullify a contract willy nilly, which is why you must wait until its nearly expired in order to decertify.

Jamiet99uk (808 D)
13 Feb 14 UTC
@ Putin: "The labor contract between the employer and the union."

Aha, ok, I'm getting there. Again that's very different from the UK model so explains why I was puzzled. In the UK there isn't necessarily a contract between employer and union, nor is one necessary in our labour laws for the union to be able to act on behalf of its members. Your right to join a union in the UK is enshrined in law regardless of what your employer might want - although of course it is *easier* if the employer co-operates.

So how long do these contracts usually last? How often would this "90 day" window of opportunity open? Once every year? Once every four years? Ten?
Draugnar (0 DX)
13 Feb 14 UTC
It depends on the term of the contract. There is no standard that requires the contract to be a fixed length.
Draugnar (0 DX)
13 Feb 14 UTC
UK unions are closer to our Labor Relations Board and government organizations that see to the safety and fair treatment of all employees (and before Putin goes there, that is what they are *supposed* to do, they may well fail miserably in that job).
Jamiet99uk (808 D)
13 Feb 14 UTC
So in other words a union and an employer could totally stifle the "democracy" Putin claims exists, by simply agreeing a 20-year contract, this giving most workers no actual opportunity to "dump their union"?
Draugnar (0 DX)
13 Feb 14 UTC
Yes, but it isn't in the unions best interest as a turn in the economy could make their deal a windfall for the employer, and they still have regular elections of union presidents and such. Plus I think every contract requires a vote by the union membership, so not likely to be approved.
Jamiet99uk (808 D)
13 Feb 14 UTC
Ok I'm confused again, Draugnar.

Are you saying that once the union has entered into a contract with the employer, no further collective bargaining can take place until that contract expires?
Draugnar (0 DX)
13 Feb 14 UTC
Not being a union member, I can't speak to that with certainty, but I would imagine only in special circumstances and then it would require a contract alteration/negation to implement the new deal. Kind of like an athlete having a five year contract. If the league doesn't want to let him out, walking away would be breach of contract.
krellin (80 DX)
13 Feb 14 UTC
"no further collective bargaining can take place until that contract expires? "

Not true -- but an alteration of existing agreements would have to be voted on. Look at Detroit, where the Mayor and subsequently the Emergency Financial Manager tried to renegotiate contracts with the assorted collective bargaining units destroying the city. First you have to get the Putty-Daddy Thug Bosses off their knees and willing to negotiate, but once they have renegotiated an existing contract, the membership has to authorize.....just like any other contract law.
Putin33 (111 D)
13 Feb 14 UTC
Contracts typically range from 1-5 years in duration, depending on the industry.

I challenge any of you to go to your local Meijer or Kroger stores (if you have them) or some other mass retail / grocery store that is unionized and ask you cashier / bagger / shelf-stocker /etc if they like being forced to be in the union, and if they would leave the union if they were able. Ask them if they have any idea how to get rid of their union.

Then you will see the utter lie behind much of this discussion.

Do some research...talk to real people instead of reading your philosophy books and pretending they relate to the world. I'd be interested in what you *actually* learn...
Putin33 (111 D)
14 Feb 14 UTC
Yes, please ask the cashiers at Costco and Walmart about their respective experiences, and whether they enjoy having the best benefits package in the industry, coupled with regular pay raises and bonuses (Costco - unionized) or being treated like dirt (Walmart).
Jamiet99uk (808 D)

Ok, here's my position:

It seems that you're all really talking about Trade Unions as they exist in the USA, Canada, and similar countries.

Second, it seems that trade unions in the USA are so different from trade unions in Europe, and particularly the UK, that I'm not actually comparing like with like in my comments.

That being the case, I stand by everything I've said - but only in terms of the fact that where I make any claim and say "union", I mean a UK-style trade union.

Your arguments about points of US union law and practise are beyond me and I'll leave you to them.

Country Randomizer
I have been playing here for some time, and I'm a little upset with the way the randomizer works. I have started in 25 games and have not once been chosen to play as Turkey. I have been Turkey once when I joined midgame. I would like to play a game from start to finish as Turkey, but it has yet to happen. Can somebody explain how the algorithms work exactly and why I have yet to be Turkey yet have been Russia now 6 times.

Putin's Dilemma
One of many liberal paradox's, I call this one Putin33's Dilemma:

USA must intervene in all humanitarian war disasters (CAR, Syria, S. Sudan, etc.) -- but if USA intervenes in war, the USA is committing war crimes in the act of war itself (Drones kill!).
