The Religious State
Having seen many opinions on this forum, I am wondering about the acceptability of a religious state. Should a state be able to be primarily Muslim, Jewish, or Christian (etc.)? Is this acceptable in the modern world? If so, how far can this theocracy of sorts go? May they make laws based upon the respective religion? How far reaching should these laws be?

Please discuss, and remain amicable.

On this auspicious day I would like to share with the community my belief that the resurrection of Jesus was figurative, and not literal. The "risen" Jesus is the one that won the greatest person in history tournament. Respectfully, that's what I believe. He is risen, risen indeed.

Our very own SunZi (userID=19506) once created a useful Android app Diplomacy adjudicator based on webDiplomacy code. SunZi publically published this adjudicator app ("Little Dipper") on GetJar, where it is still free to download.

For the sake of archiving SunZi's work, which our comrade gave the bare minimum of advertising (threadID=879472 & threadID=882356), I uploaded the app to Aptoide.

Honestly, a martyr might not be a terrible idea. If the separatists murdered a loyalist elder.... That coudl be a rallying point, and an excuse for harsher treatment.
Hellenic Riot (1626 D(G))
01 Apr 15 UTC
It'd also show weakness on our side if we let members of our own royal council perish.

The dangers of a martyr are why we shouldn't execute that prisoner until after our final peace offering though.
I propose we have one member of the loyalist council sent under a flag of truce (or whatever cultural equivalent there is) to the separatist council and read our offer.
I agree with HR - no show trial until after we hear their response. We should put a time limit on the response though.

The tomato thing: I understand how it might be insulting, and like the numbers HR suggested so long as they understand that is all we have right now. I wanted to form a stockpile originally, but I like HR's idea better.
The beef thing: The stockpile we have set to be formed this month seems decent to me.
Wood worker transfer: 18 wood workers moved to wheat. I'm glad our wood stockpile is as large as it is, to cushion the blow that does to production, similarly how it will cushion our wheat stockpile by increasing the production in that.

Also, I like CB's ration idea too, but getting that to work alongside our own would be a little spotty.

Proposal for the Separatist Elders:

"To all to whom these presents shall come, Greetings in the name of King Kestas I:

His Royal Majesty, Kestas I [insert relevant titles], King of webDipia, has empowered a Colonial Council to oversee the affairs of webDipia. The Colonial Council has attempted to implement policies that will allow for the economic development and betterment of all of His Majesty's subjects on webDipia.

However, the Ruling Elders of the population of webDipia has remained steadfast in its opposition to said policies. Fomenting discord at every level, the Ruling Elders have manipulated the population into an untenable situation, opposing the rule of His Royal Majesty and the Colonial Council. Although the Colonial Council has gone out of its way to peacefully resolve these difficulties, the Ruling Elders have rejected these efforts, ostracizing themselves from the greater development of webDipia and leading their followers into a life of misery and poverty, resulting in the recent uprising that led to the deaths of 54 people.

The Colonial Council is fully prepared, in both might and resolve, to begin unremitting conflict with the panel now calling themselves the Ruling Elders of webDipia and those adherent to them. It is willing to engage in total, unrelenting warfare to avenge the slain and to vindicate the rightful claims of His Majesty.

However, His Majesty is a wise, patient, and forgiving ruler and we his Colonial Counselors are gracious and merciful. Therefore, we once more, and for the final time, extend the hand of friendship to the Ruling Elders and their followers.

Therefore, be it known that all Ruling Elders and those who are adherent to the Ruling Elders have until [the end of the month] to come to the Town Hall and swear the following:

- A perpetual oath of allegiance to His Royal Majesty, the King, to the Colonial Council of webDipia, and to the new slate of Ruling Elders empowered by those colonists loyal to the crown.
- A permanent renunciation of the rulership of the current group of Ruling Elders.
- An acknowledgment that the current group of Ruling Elders are solely to blame for the recent riots and that the Colonial Council has the right to impose just and equitable costs related to the riots to the Ruling Elders and their adherents.
- A permanent disclaiming of the notion that the Colonial Council must pay to receive pearls or any other economic resources that rightly belong to the crown.

All persons who take the oath prior to [the effective date] will receive the following benefits:
- Full and complete clemency
- A restoration of all rights and privileges enjoyed by all other loyal subjects to the crown, including, but not limited to - eligibility to serve on the new slate of Ruling Elders (except for those presently sitting as Ruling Elders) access to food, the protection of the Royal Guards, etc.

All those who fail to swear the oath by [the date] have only themselves to blame for their fates."

Going to fill in a few gaps here.

"To all to whom these presents shall come, greetings, in the name of King Kestas I:

It is willing to engage in total, unrelenting warfare to avenge the slain and to vindicate the rightful claims of His Majesty. The Council is also prepared to enact harsher laws and harsher penalties to those whose allegiances lie elsewhere than to the His Majesty, King Kestas I.

- An acknowledgment that the current group of Ruling Elders are solely to blame for the recent riots and that the Colonial Council has the right to impose just and equitable costs related to the riots to the Ruling Elders and their adherents.
- An agreement to work with and alongside the Colonial Council and His Majesty's subjects to retrieve pearls and provide adequate sustenance for all inhabitants of webDipia.
- A permanent disclaiming of the notion that the Colonial Council must pay to receive pearls or any other economic resources that rightly belong to the crown.

All persons who take the oath prior to [the effective date] will receive the following benefits:

- Full and complete clemency
- A restoration of all rights and privileges enjoyed by all other loyal subjects to the crown, including, but not limited to - eligibility to serve on the new slate of Ruling Elders (except for those presently sitting as Ruling Elders) access to food, the protection of the Royal Guards, access to colonial technologies, access to the colonial economy, access to colonial healthcare, and restoration of the indigenous culture as it pleases the Colonial Council and His Majesty, the King.

All those who fail to swear the oath by [the date] have only themselves to blame for their fates.

I will sign the letter.

I see no need to buy rifles, as I do not believe we are in a position where they are needed. There's no meaningful danger the the colony as a whole, as the Royal guard can keep an acceptable level of control, and there is no real reason to go out looking for violence. If our standard of life is better than that of the seperatists, we will win this conflict without having to resort to that. Furthermore, I do no trust this government with increased weaponry, because it has already shown itself to be at best rash, and at worst bloodthirsty.
TrPrado (461 D)
01 Apr 15 UTC
I sign on to the letter as TrPrado, Secretary of Labor and Resources of the Colonial Council.
Although I wrote the shell of this I may withhold my signature. In the event they refuse to negotiate and we have to implement the decapitation strike i think one of is has to play the pacifist and go apologize to the elders and lure them into the ambush. I'm willing to jeopardize myself and do that if necessary.

Btw, sorry if I supplanted anyone's official duties in drafting that.
KingCyrus (511 D)

bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
01 Apr 15 UTC
Maher, we have been told to make a point *not* to risk our own lives. I think that holds true here.

KC, as the defense secretary, your signature tells me that you and the Guard are ready to commit to open warfare if this offer is rejected, yes?
mendax (321 D)
01 Apr 15 UTC
Cold war is better and more useful than open warfare. More colonists alive means more workers later, even if it takes longer to resolve this will be better in the long run.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
01 Apr 15 UTC
We have effectively been waging cold war. We're at a sort of Cuban Missile Crisis right now, and based on the fact that the Loyal Elders agree that it's time to take some harsher action, I am ready to deliver this ultimatum. I hope they agree to it.

Magistrate, I am unsure of what dates should be put on there, but I believe that we should ensure all of our defenses are built and sustainable before expecting their response.
I don't think we have to have open warfare, even if the offer is rejected. I think if the elders reject our offer, we should attempt to assassinate them en masse.

If we're not to risk our lives then I say we use the loyal elders as the pretext for the ambush. The loyal elders are to invite the separatist elders to some kind of kumbayah meeting where we will have the separatist elders killed by the Royal Guard laying in wait. It would be best to not inform the loyal elders about our intentions.
We could stage some in-fighting within the loyalist council or between the loyalist council and ourselves that would lure the separatists in.
KingCyrus (511 D)
01 Apr 15 UTC
Bo, we are ready, though I would prefer not to have open warfare. I am more of a burn-down-supplies-and-starve-them-into-submission kind of guy. If they refuse this deal, or if some of them do, I know exactly what will need to happen. Depending on how many of them refuse, we will have them at our knees shortly. Any kind of potential weapons go first, then access to food, then houses. We will destroy anything they have until they submit. Of course, this is not preferred.

For all pacifists, remember they caused the deaths of 54 people last month. I am going to make sure as few loyalists and Royal Guard die as possible. Then, and only then, will I worry about sparing separatists.

Also, Royal Guards will be instructed not to do serious bodily harm to any separatists unless they or a loyalist or Councilor is endangered. (hat tip to Byron for ROE)
KingCyrus (511 D)
01 Apr 15 UTC
SecLab, any spare units would be useful for either building defensive structures or as potential militia men. Remember, this would only be temporary and the most pressing issue for the next few months (hopefully not man) is to regain complete and absolute control over the island.
CommanderByron (801 D(S))
01 Apr 15 UTC
Appreciate the hat tip, KC. can't wait to return to the island. In the good spirit of accuracy, once I am considered "gone" I will not look at the thread. This way when I arrive back it will be as if I am arriving new to the colony.
KingCyrus (511 D)

Convoying Question - the roundabout
Let us suppose someone has an army in Yorkshire and a fleet in North Sea. However, the army is beset by enemies in London and Liverpool.
Our army in Yorkshire is going to be pushed out. If we assume the attack will come from London supported by Liverpool... could our army in Yorkshire, convoy through the fleet in North Sea and land again at the newly vacated London?
