Trip - Do you recon we could put on a 5th group? There are a number of people who'd join if they could, and then you just take the top two from each group, and the best 3rd from 3 of them. The more we have, the better the competition

@figles - the 5th league wouldn't be arranged by the snaking GR method.

If we didn't already have the groups broken up and games half filled, I would say OK. I just don't think it would be fair to up and change how advancing works after people have joined the games.

Why not let more people join in, thus increasing the standard of the tournament, rather than being fixed to a set by the fact we got people ready. Oh, and as for snaking GR? Well sure that would be wrecked but a)I recon you'll get quite an even mix and b) WHY DOES GR HAVE TO CONTROL EVERYTHING!?!

Making this as competitive as possible wasn't what I was going for when I started it. My mindset was keep it small, make the advancement rate high so more people succeed, and have fun.

There's always going to be people left out. We could make 10 more groups and the second they fill someone will ask if there's room for one more. Where would you draw the line, right after the anonymous "others" that you're speaking for?

I'd draw names out of a hat to pick the groups if I could. GR just seems like the least inaccurate way of ranking things here.

Trip, I think gr is the best way right now. Perhaps in the future tourney results can also help determine bracket order. Thanks again for putting this together.

I'll def. join the next round of this tournament. I have started to find that talking games can become vastly aggravating. I prefer gunboat greatly because when you play with people that have played many many games of diplomacy and have a firm understanding of the rules, and a firm understanding of the map; talking is just mostly irrelevant. Plus such people are usually quality people to begin with so shouting "NOOOOOOOOO, DALE, TURN LEFT. INTO NAPLES. YOU MORON, YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU HAVE DONE" doesn't leave a good taste in my mouth.

Perhaps someone can come up with a new GR for gunboats? Gunboat Ratings?

what? And I find that talking's pretty irrelevant UNLESS people have a firm understanding of the rules and a firm understanding of the map. If they're clueless, they'll probably be even more clueless and confused after you talk to them!

@ava: I agree, there should be to GRs, one for gunboat and one for the other types

@figle and trip: small tournament is more likely to be fun and there will be (I hope) less CDs. But if you have energy and time, why don't you start another similar tournament? Then you could arrange "superfinals" at the end.

I guess I missed these set of games but would like to state that I would be interrested in participating in a next round (if this one is succesfull). Also when people become unable to play in this round, I am willing to step in (I guess I have to step in line).

The problem with GR for gunboats is the lack of sufficient data (or was last time I checked). I would suggest perhaps having a rating where normal games count, but much less than gunboats, for a gunboat rating system. Haven't looked into the possibility thought

@ askninjasks: players have until Thurs to join the games. Arya8 dropped me a line yesterday to say that he should have the needed points shortly. If not, then ashen_shugar will take his place.

Looks like Group A is waiting for one too. I know C is waiting for TrustMe and D, Arya8. Who's missing from A?

@ Kamen: If someone wants to set up another 28 player tourney, that would be fine with me, but I'd leave it up to top 3 or 4 finishers in the Finals here to decide if they wanted to play a Grand Final/All-Star game with the other tourney's top finishers. I can't imagine they wouldn't.

I'm kind of viewing this as a test drive. I absolutely would like to run a 56 player tourney in the future. Tbh, I was surprised at how quickly this filled, so thing got a little rushed.

@ Barnett: That would make sense. He was on 12ish hrs ago, but didn't PM me about points issue. The cut off time for him to let me know if he has a realistic shot at getting the points (not to actually have them) is a few hours away.
