A Friendly Message From the Mods
This isn't directed at anyone in particular, just some general trends we've been noticing:
1) Please make sure the email in your profile is up-to-date and you check it regularly.
2) Please remember that there is to be *no* communication in gunboat games, no matter how innocuous.
Thanks

Chance calculations, little help?
Example: I throw a 6-sided die 6 times. How many chance do I have to throw at least one 6 in 1 throw? Any calculation I can think of says 100%, but I'm sure as hell there's a chance to not throw one 6... I do understand the average should be one time per six throws though.

banning iranian and syrian media stations, good call?
western nations are banning iranian and syrian media, do you guys think it will help prevent unfiltered propaganda from brainwashing our youth? particularly unapproved war images from our covert and fingers crossed soon to be more overt operations.

Which Winnie the Pooh Character are you most like?
I'm firmly of the belief that they have most personalities covered pretty well. I, for example, am firmly a Rabbit. What about YOU!?? Don't mix and match, and don't pick that little dicknob Christopher Robin unless you are a man and enjoy penises that don't belong to you.

Cardinal Keith O'Brien sorry for sexual misconduct
That's nice .... if there were real justice in this world he would get the opportunity to tell a judge in a court of law how sorry he was, I wonder how sorry he was before he was 'outed' as a paedophile.

whats up with jon stewart
i thought the conflict with woodward was because he pointed out that the sequestration came from the presidents office
but i just saw stewart discuss the matter it went something like this
woodward accused them of moving the goalposts. boring! lets move on.
so... does stewart still have any credibility?

World Diplo IX - not year 1
What year is the World Diplomacy IX set Definitely not year 2000, by then America was united. No countries have ever existed in Antarctica, and the last empire to rule Germany, Italy and France was Napoleon. Only India can claim some legitimacy on that map.

Falkland Islands
Recently, many South American countries closed their ports for boats from Falklands to support Argentinian claim to the islands. Since Falklands' economy heavily relies on fishing, not being able to dock, resupply and stuff hits them pretty hard.

The lower lying parts of Holland should be given back to the sea. They're unnatural.
Octavious (2701 D)

In this regard JECE is quite correct. Further conversation is pointless. What JECE has achieved in this (and previous) conversations is to demonstrate that the Argentine belief that the Falklands should be theirs is not held merely by the masses who have been duped into believing that the Faulklands are an oppressed outpost of Empire (which I used to imagine was the case), but instead by educated and informed people who simply see the islanders as an irrelevance.

This is painfully depressing, and has somewhat lowered my opinion of Argentina, but it is important to know.
SYnapse (0 DX)

Aren't the "native islanders" essentially Brits who moved/were implanted there? I can't imagine such a barren place having any native residents.
Octavious (2701 D)
18 Feb 13 UTC
It's not barren. It's a quite beautiful place with a wealth of wildlife (an extremely important penguin habit etc etc) that reminds me quite a lot of the part of Britain where I grew up. It was uninhabited until the Europeans came, after which various nations attempted to set up colonies, as was the tradition of the time. Most failed within a decade because of the climate, isolation and other Europeans. The last attempt was by the British which has lasted for over 9 generations thus far and is currently thriving.
SYnapse (0 DX)
18 Feb 13 UTC
Octavious, I didn't mean aesthetically but it's practically inhospitable (to what we would consider classical native peoples).
Octavious (2701 D)
18 Feb 13 UTC
Not really. It's certainly far most hospitable than the parts of northern Canada inhabited by Inuits, for example. The primary reason for it's lack of native population is that it's in the middle of nowhere. The relatively wild weather of the South Atlantic and the huge distances involved made the sort of island hopping by primitive people elsewhere virtually impossible.
Jamiet99uk (808 D)
18 Feb 13 UTC
I accept that JECE "doesn't have the time" to produce evidence that the Spanish visited the Falklands prior to 1690. You could look for such evidence FOR EVER and not find it, because there is no such evidence, because they DIDN'T.
Jamiet99uk (808 D)
18 Feb 13 UTC
It would however take mere seconds for JECE to admit he was wrong, in point of fact, on this one.
JECE (1248 D)
23 Feb 13 UTC
Jamiet99uk: See, this is exactly why it's pointless to argue on forums. People just don't listen to you. I made it clear that the moment of discovery is irrelevant to the sovereignty claims over the Falklands based on several points which you have wholly ignored.

Nevertheless, the issue of discovery is not at all as clear as you may think. The Falklands were definitely visited long before your 1690 expedition. Take a look at the following pages:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_the_history_of_the_Falkland_Islands#16th_Century
http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Descubrimiento_de_las_islas_Malvinas
JECE (1248 D)
25 Feb 13 UTC
Octavious:
* I wouldn't have stuck my head in this thread if I thought the case was irrelevant.
* I'm only half-Argentine and have only visited the country a handful of times.
* No Argentinian believes those they like to call 'kelpers' are oppressed by an imperialist power. If anything, they believe the islanders are tools of an imperialist power – or the imperialists themselves. The only 'oppressed' were the Argentines expelled from the island in the 19th Century.
Octavious (2701 D)
25 Feb 13 UTC
@ JECE

The majority Argentine belief is that in the grand scheme of things the rights and desires of the Islanders are irrelevant. The majority view of the British is that the rights and desires of the Islanders are the only relevant factor. That is why there is an impasse and that is why discussion is pointless.

I don't see what how Argentine you do or don't see view yourself as being has to do with anything.
JECE (1248 D)

"What JECE has achieved in this (and previous) conversations is to demonstrate that the Argentine belief that the Falklands should be theirs is not held merely by the masses who have been duped into believing that the Faulklands [sic] are an oppressed outpost of Empire (which I used to imagine was the case), but instead by educated and informed people who simply see the islanders as an irrelevance."

Now do you see what the hell I might have been referring to?

Methinks there has been a breakdown in communications here somewhere. I have really no idea what point you're trying to make.
