How bad is a beer and approximately a bottle of wine on one evening?
Judging by what others at the party talked about I thought it was reasonable (although a bit more than I was going for, I really liked the wine...), but yet others seem to think it's quite too much. There were people more drunk than me, but I won't base my drinking habits on what others do..
It was the first time I 'really' drank, probably worth mentioning.

No, I did too until someone commented on Nigee, forcing me to hit ESC to see what Nigee said which then revealed maple's off topic comments that are in violation of the mods recent "kinder, gentler forum" rules.

By the way, Steephie. Grams is a unit of mass and milliliters a unit of volume. There is no direct conversion unless you know the density of the material in question. Alcohol, being much lighter than water, would have less than one gram per milliliter where as water is one gram per milliliter and the non-alcohol parts of beer and wine and liquor may have more than one gram per milliliter. So you could never compute that exactly.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
09 Jul 14 UTC
Yeah I googled the density of alcohol so I've taken that into account. I may still have made a miscalculation, but I did use its density.
Draugnar (0 DX)
09 Jul 14 UTC
But you don't know the density of the other matter in the beer, wine, or liquor. The best way to compute it is to know the percent by volume. If a beer is 8% by volume and we know 100 proof liquor is 50% by volume (not mass) then the beer needs 12.5 times the volume to get the same amount of alcohol. A shot is 1.5 ounces. that would be just under 20 ounces of beer.
steephie22 (182 D(S))

I know the E of EBAC stands for Estimate so if you're trying to point out why it's an estimate okay, but in the formula, it doesn't matter since a Standard Drink is defined as a drink with 10 grams of alcohol in it.

I can't figure out what you mean with "100 proof liquor". An ounce is 200 grams, right?
steephie22 (182 D(S))
09 Jul 14 UTC
Damn, 200ml. I meant to say "An ounce is 200ml, right?"
steephie22 (182 D(S))
09 Jul 14 UTC
No that's not what I meant. Whut? I just woke up, I'm confusing myself really fast?

I'm guessing 200 grams though.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

Why are you making your life hard by trying to measure liquids in grams?

If a beer is 355 mL and 5% alcohol by volume and a bottle of wine is 750 mL and 10% alcohol by volume then a bottle of wine would be about 4.25x the amount of alcohol.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
09 Jul 14 UTC
Proof is a measure of alcohol by volume. 100 proof means 50% alcohol.

Again, grams is a unit of mass, not volume. So an ounce of liquid (unit of *volume*) would be 200 ml. An ounce in mass would be 200 grams. It just happens to be that water is equal in mass and volume.

1 ounce of water is 28.35ml/28.35 grams. A shot glass holds about 42 ml of liquid. At 70-80 proof (the most common range) that would be 17-18 ml of alcohol. Pure alcohol is 1.25 ml per gram (or .8 grams per ml). So a full US shot glass is closer to 13-14 grams per drink. Of course, you rarely get them completely full if you order shots and less reputable bars water them down. But the easiest way to compare is to look at the ACBV (Alcohol Content By Volume) and forget about trying to convert to grams. Just deal in ml. If you have a 12 ounce bottle or can of beer (4%-8% ABV, we'll just say 6%) then you have .72 ounces of alcohol. .72 * 28.35 = 20.4 ml or 16.3 grams. When you factor in the shot not being completely full, a typical US drink is about 16-17 grams or 20-21 ml or .75 ounces of pure alcohol.

Draugnar (0 DX)
09 Jul 14 UTC
Also correct my first 200 set I pulled from your numbers. There is not 200 ml in an ounce. There is less than 30 ml in an ounce.
Draugnar (0 DX)

Yeah, he's not understanding the ounce as a unit of volume not mass.

ssorenn (0 DX)

so true
steephie22 (182 D(S))
09 Jul 14 UTC
I understand, I just didn't know how much an ounce was, and I didn't know that there was such a thing as a fluid ounce.

So was there anything wrong with what I calculated before? About 60 grams of alcohol so 6 standard drinks in that formula. Sure, I could have googled how much volume of alcohol one standard drink is, but there's different measures of standard drinks so I just made sure I did what it said in the formula.

I don't think I see an issue.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
09 Jul 14 UTC
You don't know the density of wine, so you will always be less accurate calculating by mass than by volume. It's also harder to calculate using mass. Don't do things that are harder and less accurate.

If you used the proper density for wine, you'd see they come out the same.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
09 Jul 14 UTC
If you're using 10g as the standard tthen that's 12.7mL of alcohol. That means 149.4mL of 17 proof wine is one standard drink. That means a bottle of wine contains 5 standard drinks.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
09 Jul 14 UTC
The reason you are confused is because a bottle of beer is not one standard drink. It's more like 1.5. It would have to be 3.5% alcohol yo be one standard drink, but it's usually closer to 5-8.
WardenDresden (239 D(B))
09 Jul 14 UTC
This is a silly thread. Steephie, imho, if you have to ask if you had too much, then it's probably too much. Trying to use density calculations with regard to liquids and alcohol percentages is silly.

I don't party, and I personally don't consume any alcoholic beverages, but my own philosophies aside, I think having an entire bottle of wine as a single person is a bad idea, if not necessarily dangerous. If you still feel tipsy the next day, then I would also think it's to much. Anyways, that's all of my thoughts on the issue.
Draugnar (0 DX)
09 Jul 14 UTC
It also depends on nationality. A 12 oz bottle of beer (355 ml) = 1.5 ounces (a US shot) of hard liquor. But that is more than the 12.7 ml of Australia and parts of Europe where 250 ml is a standard single serving of beer.

Who could have imagined a thread about beer could be so unbearably dull?

First Game!
Hello all, I plan on joining my first game. I've mainly used the site to read the forums so now I need advice. Is it better to join a random pre-made game or should I request players from the forum so as to ensure it is a good game. If the latter, then if you are interested please post here. Ideally I would like to start the game next week. Anon, WTA, and a medium buy-in. Look forward to it!

Design Flaw in the Global Variant
I have now encountered several times a design flaw in the global variant in that fleets may not pass between Armenia and Moscow (which has a Black Sea Coastline bordering Armenia); neither can they support an action between them. Armies may move and support unimpeded; but fleets may not. What is to be done about that? Game Masters, please respond.

Anyone else watching the war of Tumblr vs. 4Chan play out? It's getting heated and somewhat illegal. Then again, it may not and it's all a bluff from both sides. But if it is true then there must be a lot of hackers with free-time and no need to gain any monetary value.
