Raids in Belgium on Terror Cells; 100+ Arrested Across Europe
http://www.cnn.com/2015/01/15/world/belgium-anti-terror-operation/ "A Western Intelligence source tells CNN that the ongoing terror threat appears to involve up to 20 sleeper cells of between 120 to 180 people ready to strike in France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands." 2014 was a year that will remembered for a lot of violence in the Middle East...might we remember 2015 as the year that violence came to Europe and the West?

Can't Ready Up Building fewer units than earned?
I want to save one of my builds for later. I entered one build but left the other blank since I don't want to use it yet. The order won't allow me to 'Ready' up. Will the one build still go through? Is this a bug, or is it a rule that I must use all my builds?

Mafia Sign Up Thread
If you're interested in playing a game beginning sometime after January 11, post here. I'll take on the GM role alone initially but I would love to have a co-GM if anyone is interested in that.

We can also discuss details of the next game. Preliminarily, there will be no SK and two primary factions (town/mafia). I would love to get creative with power roles if others are interested too.

Also I need a bit of feedback about current direction, I feel as if it's going to be harder for me to keep an element of humour now I'm moving into telling the story. is this a problem? Should I keep story short and try to make it funny or concentrate on telling the story and not try to force the humour? All feedback welcome.

Chapter 11

Aside from his massive intellect, France’s other great quality was his power of procrastination. He was an Olympic grade procrastinator. He took his role seriously and trained every day to perfect his art. This morning he had warmed-up by shilly-shallying and playing for time for about an hour before an intensive bout of dragging his feet followed up by hour or two of hardcore procrastination. He was now ready to get up and face the world. His first task of the day was to book a holiday, he’d toyed with the idea of using lastminute dot com but reasoned that no major league dawdler would do anything in the last minute. Surely the idea would be to let the deadline expire before even thinking about taking action. He mused that he should set up a company selling holidays to people after the final boarding call had been announced, but knew he probably wouldn’t get around to it.

WevDiplomacy, as always was on hand to provide a welcome distraction. It was rumoured that webDip was now being prescribed to fallen procrastinators to help them get their mojo back. All serious procrastinators really needed was a distraction and webDip proved this in spades. When players weren’t involved in trying to conquer Europe, they could focus on the Ancient Med or the Fallen Empire or even the whole world. At other times they contented themselves with chatting endlessly to the other procrastinators on the forum.

In order to give himself enough time to procrastinate a little longer, France decided to request a pause in his nosebleed game. He opened up the game only to see that Turkey had already asked for a pause. Now this was something he had to think about and decided to return to bed to sleep on it.

Turkey was still comatosed but had had the foresight to leave written instructions to his parents about what they should do if he was ever to be temporarily incapacitated. The first thing they should do was to log on to webDip and request a pause without stating a reason. They should then notify his girlfriend and work and cancel the milk. He had also left written instructions as to what to do in the event of his death. For now these instructions remained sealed.

Germany was furious with the idea of a pause, he had every cent he possessed tied up in this game and wanted his victory to be swift. There was nothing in the rules about enforcing a replacement if someone requested a pause so perhaps he ought to take matters into his own hands. Perhaps he should pay Turkey a little visit and persuade him to continue immediately. The alternative was just not voting for a pause, but that was considered bad etiquette.

To be continued…

Chapter 2- Twisting the Knife

The Texan President was possibly the most boring person on the North American continent. He’d drawn out every detail of the meeting for hours. Things that should have only taken minutes had been iterated and reiterated in great detail. On more than one occasion, Davis or Rivera had tried to interject as a point became redundant, but President Paynter had the kind of voice that wasn’t necessarily loud; it tended to dominate a conversation by undermining the other voices. They had discussed everything from a DMZ in Nuevo Leon and Chihuahua to foreign policy with California to concerns over each other’s troop movements to territory claims as far east as Cuba and as far west as San Francisco. Paynter had even been the one to propose the tuxedos that they had worn. Neither of the other two had particularly liked the idea- they were diplomats, not attendees of a cocktail party, but the Texan didn’t seem to notice or care. In fact, he’d seemed to enjoy himself.

That said, it had come as a surprise when Paynter finally called the meeting to an abrupt halt, without formalities or even a proper farewell. They had been ushered out the door and sent their separate ways to return to their own countries.

Now, Axél stood before his desk, with a slight sideways grin. Right now, the Texan was probably sitting comfortably in the penthouse of the hotel, pleased with his “successful” negotiations. Even if he did expect any sort of betrayal from the other two, he wouldn’t expect a fully-fledged attack from Mexico tonight. Of course, it was inevitably coming- the order had been placed not long after Rivera had left Dallas.

---------------o---------------

Juan Ortiz, commander of the main body of the Mexican army, was only a few miles from Monterrey, the largest city in the region of Nuevo Leon. In the past few months, the Texans had decided that the break-up of the United States and the Mexican change in government gave them the authority to ‘acquire’ land that once belonged to the Mexicans. He had a force of 1,000 men and three tanks, as well as the element of surprise. The entire force wouldn’t be entering the city all at once; half of the men would stay behind with the tanks in case they were discovered before the enemy general could be captured. The force that would actually be entering the city would divide up into ten teams of fifty men, and execute a multi-pronged attack. Patrols would be taken out stealthily and quickly as necessary, and if all went well, the city could be captured with minimal bloodshed. He decided on a time to strike, approximately half an hour from now, and relayed the message to his subordinates. Tonight, the battle for Nuevo Leon would begin.
There's chapter 2 of my story. I hope I didn't skip ahead too quickly; the hotel scene was just intended as setup, and I kind of wanted to get to the battle scene by chapter 3. Also, I hope the gap between chapters wasn't too long- as I've said before, I have difficulty focusing on things like this, but I'll try to keep the gap between chapters down to a maximum of three days. Thoughts?
Dang, that last sentence sounded really redundant. I apologize in advance to any grammar nazis out there.
Tasnica (3366 D)

Keep it coming KOW, I think you have the balance between pace and detail just right. I note that you're getting twice the number of +1s as my last chapter but I'm not jealous, bitter or insecure.

Chapter 12

Most children at some stage of their lives have played ‘doctors and nurses’. This is perfectly natural and isn’t regarded as a felony providing no operations, amputations or internal examinations are performed. A blind eye is turned to adults who engage in doctor and nurse games in the privacy of their own home, again providing no operations or amputations are performed; internal examines are now permitted. It is a felony, however, to impersonate a medical professional in a hospital. That said, this crime is mostly ignored as the hospital administrators welcome the additional unpaid staff. It only really causes problems when the impostor starts killing the patients. Turkey would probably have known the statistical likelihood of been murdered in a hospital. If he did know he never got to tell anyone.

Turkey had a knack for forward planning. He had imagined his own death and had written his own obituaries which would be released upon his demise. The obituary written to announce his death on the webDip forum read as follows:

“Dear Kestas, zultar, mods, fellow diplomats, masterminds, members, casual players and political puppets of webDip,

It is with great sadness and regret that I have to announce my real life death. It is said that nobody ever died wishing they had worked harder, I don’t know if people die wishing they had played less, but I, for one, don’t regret a single second playing with you guys. You are my second family. The only difference to my real family is that I spent more time with you guys and communicated far more. I know that in our time together each of you has probably spoken behind my back, plotted my downfall and stabbed me in the back. But I also know you have done it with enthusiasm and vigour and that gladdens my heart. I have learnt a lot about the world from my interactions with the site. There was a time I knew nothing about European history and now I bore the few remaining friends I have relaying details of the 1901-1913 era. I have also been fortunate enough to be guided by yourselves about personal matters I raised in the forum. How to kiss, how to hit on my best friend’s girl, which drugs to experiment with and you also expanded my knowledge of exotic fruit and veg.

I hope I am remembered, fondly or otherwise.”

Turkey read it back to himself, brushed away a tear stain and promptly burnt it. Not because of the oxymoron in line 1, but because he realised that upon his death his real family would grieve, how could he also inflict this on his second family? He hoped his passing would go unnoticed, perhaps other players would wonder if he had joined another site or given up the game completely. His final act of kindest to his friends would be to spare them knowledge of his death.

One webDip player did know about his demise. He had tracked the IP address of his last post and was given his room number by the hospital reception who fell for his line about being his brother. He was now exiting a side bathroom and wondering down the corridor to his room with some grapes. He introduced himself at the door only to be told the terrible news that he was 20 minutes too late.

No one could trace the fake doctor and the hospital reasoned that it would only hurt the family if they were aware of the circumstances, so decided to sweep the matter under the carpet.

Whilst this was, of course, a terrible turn of events. A new player would be drafted in soon and the game could recommence without a pause.

To be continued…

Well, that was brutal, one down before the game even started!
Hmm- I think I can fit substantially more deaths into my fic than you can, but that's just the nature of my story as compared to yours. That was definitely an interesting twist; I'm liking it.
Maniac (184 D(B))

Can I get some feedback about the story so far? I’m not +1 whoring, but I’ve just looked at the +1s for each chapter and they look like this:-

VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV Intro
VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV England’s Paranoia
VVVVVVVVVVVVVV Turkey’s stats
VVVVVVVVVVVV Russia the talkative one
VVVVVVVVVVV France the mafia player
VVVVVVVV Neurotic Austria
VVVVVVVVV Controlling Germany
VVVVVV Italy and Austria hook up
VVVVV Ghost destroys world economy
VVV Russia’s kidnap
VV France procrastinates
VVVVV Turkey's Murder

Now in a way this doesn’t bother me in the sense that I’m writing this for myself and if others like it that’s great. But I’d like to know if the drop off in likes is reflective of a general feeling amongst the readership that the quality of writing has dipped? Is chapter 11 (France procrastinating) 1/8th as funny as England’s paranoia in Chapter 2? I’m only asking these questions as I want to improve as a writer. Thx in advance for your input.

I think that the writing is good. My hypothesis as to why you've been getting less and less +1s isn't because of decline in your quality of writing. I think it's just a decline in people's interest in the +1 button itself. At this point, they've already put their support behind your first several chapters, while you keep writing- with each new chapter it becomes less necessary to push the button (you've already established that you aren't going to stop writing it). The explanation for the jump in likes again with Turkey's murder is that it was just a really good chapter- people felt the need for you to know it, so they +1ed it.
I don't necessarily speak for everyone, that's just the way I see human nature playing into this.

The one move support arrow is obvious. I also give fake supports for my own units to point allies down a path. (Of course this assumes our allies open and read the expanded detail maps. And allies may need to go a couple maps back to get the whole story.) What do you do?
