foreign girl BUSTED playing hard to get
calls her friend to tell him she's in trouble. at the end of the call utters something in her native language meant to be construed as "help me!" or something, but it just happens to be one of the few things you know in her language and it means good luck with your work (guy she called is working late for some reason). hard to get: BUSTED

They would be pretty extreme, although mostly if Obama won the popular vote. If Romney won it, it would be relatively hard for Obama to protest at the fact that he was going to lose in the House.
Invictus (240 D)
19 Oct 12 UTC
Right. If there's a tie and Romney wins the popular vote then I don't see too much of an issue at all, besides a push to reform the process. If it's a tie and Obama wins the popular vote then I actually think the Republicans would vote to keep him in. There's no way they would do that much damage to the country. Even for their own self-interests they should see the light and not deny Obama another term if he won the popular vote. Democrats would raise hell about it being a coup and a lot of the country would go with them. I know I would. And there's also the unpleasant thought that Obama may not agree to leave in that situation...
why are we even discussing these? i thought obama was set to dominate. although to be honest, i stopped paying attention about a month ago.
semck83 (229 D(B))

I disagree, Invictus. For one thing, winning the popular vote (narrowly) under the electoral college doesn't actually mean a majority of the country wanted you. This is one reason why it's a fallacy to complain when one person wins the electoral college and loses the popular vote.

The issue is that the campaigns weren't run according to a popular-vote system, and people didn't make voting decisions according to one. People in Texas and California and New York etc. etc. may feel complacent and less likely to come out than people in a swing state. And for sure the campaigns would be run completely differently in that process, leading to outcomes that would be changed in untold ways. So the popular vote is actually essentially meaningless when the system that's used is the electoral college.

And since the second part of that system is Congress, I would absolutely argue for Republicans to vote for Romney if that situation arose. To cite the popular vote is like signing up for a 400m and then arguing you should be declared winner because you sprinted the first quarter fastest. Sorry -- wrong game.

I think Romney will win with 332 electoral votes. He will pickup Indiana, North Carolina, Florida, Virginia, Colorado, New Hampshire, Iowa, Ohio, Nevada, Wisconsin, Pennylvania, and one of Maine's electoral votes.

Romney with or about 332. Obama with or about 206.
Sbyvl36 (439 D)

Other states that COULD go to Romney (if he gets a landslide victory): Oregon, Minnesota, New Jersey, Connecticut, Washington state, Michigan.

@krellin:
"Skin in the game". The reason this exists is because of the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit. So, you can eliminate those, and fix it. For pretty much everyone affected, Payroll taxes actually undoes this, and cause there to be "skin in the game", even for just taxes taken out of paychecks. This whole debate is pretty amusing.
Draugnar (0 DX)
19 Oct 12 UTC
Those two credits don't account for it all. There isva minimum level of income that is not taxed andbthe person gets back everything they paid in. This should be so low as to not apply to anyone with a full time job.
Tantris (2456 D)
19 Oct 12 UTC
The Earned Income Tax Credit is probably the biggest part of it. So, a family with 1 child and 1 worker making $10/hr. They earn approximately $20,000/yr. The Earned Income Tax Credit is ~$3000. The Child Tax Credit is ~$1000. Their income taxes are $2130 (without standard deduction). Their payroll taxes are ~8%, which is another $1600.
Half of payroll taxes are also payed employers. If you know anything about economics, tax incidence tells you that the employer share of payroll taxes paid by employers will be partly paid for with lower salaries -- so some of the total 15.3% comes straight out of everyone's pockets.

Romney's "47%" remark ignores payroll taxes and only discusses federal income taxes, which are a relatively small share of the taxes paid by lower income Americans.
What do you mean "payroll taxes" this isn't a thing and if you mean payroll remittances there is no way the employer pays half. maybe of the government pension plan they pay half but I highly doubt anyone's employer is paying half of the income tax remital (plus its impossible because it then just becomes an additional amount of employment income).

Learn what you're all talking about.
The issue is that "federal income tax" is a misleading category. Around half of the federal government's function is just Social Security and Medicare; payroll taxes, which are paid by everyone who has a job, pay for those services. If they hadn't created a separate income tax with a different name to fund those programs, no one could make these misleading arguments about poor people not paying taxes.
erist (228 D(B))

Obama: 302
Romney: 236

Popular vote 50.2% Obama 48.1% Romney
Lando, look up "Federal Insurance Contribution taxes". The employer share for Medicare and Social Security taxes is around 7% of total compensation, and so is the employee share.
Draugnar (0 DX)
19 Oct 12 UTC
What is the "payroll taxes" of which you speak? Do you mean state and local income taxes? Cause there are no other federal payroll taxes beside income tax unless you count social security, which has a cap.
erist (228 D(B))
19 Oct 12 UTC
Actually, I say 311 to 227
Draugnar (0 DX)
19 Oct 12 UTC
But realize that FICA is a fixed percent, no scaled tables and no deductions. Except for the cap, it is the fairest of all the taxes. I fwe took off the cap, the system would be much more stable and if we converted all income taxes to a flat tax like FICA, we would have a much fairer system.
Yes, social security, which is capped at the first $105k (although the Medicare portion is not capped). Those are what we mean when we say "payroll taxes". They're paid by everyone, and they contribute to a massive part of the federal budget, so it's outrageous to say there are people not paying taxes and don't have "skin in the game".
