A Question About US/UK TV...
Well, all my friends like Doctor who, so I've taken to watching it...and a friend told me DW was still in B&W in 1966...while Kirk was fighting that hilariously-rubber-suited Gorn in color already? On the other side of the coin...we seem to borrow some TV shows and ideas from Across the Pond...why is the BBC behind tech-wise and US TV behind "idea-wise?" (Are we...or is this just me?)

Shit, kid, you're gonna give yourself scurvy.

@Obi - "And then somewhere around 11pm-1am, if I'm still awake and hungry, I'll make something to eat--and by make something I mean microwave the fuck out of whatever's lying around."

I do that too, but that is after I've had at least two decent meals (I'm bad about skipping breakfast as I seem to always have morning meetings) as well as a mid afternoon piece of fruit or bagel with some Chai.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
07 Dec 11 UTC
Yeah, I'm terrible at eating breakfast. I'm usually not hunger until several hours after I've woken up.
Draugnar (0 DX)

Oh, and Obi, my wife is on Dilantin and Primidone for seizures. I know she has a smaller appetite, but I make her eat as not getting enough calium and vitamin D contributes to her osteoperosis (sp?) and not getting enough B and C make her more sickly. Not to mention how it fucks up your digestive system (not crapping enough and stuff). Make yourself eat, dude, or you'll be lucky to see 30.
Draugnar (0 DX)
07 Dec 11 UTC
@abge - Same here. If I don't have a meeting, about 9 o'clock I go to the cafe on the second floor and get some sausage gravy and biscuits or a couple hame and cheese croissants. But I always seem to get pulled into 8:30 or 9:00 meetings that run an hour or more and then it's 10:00 and lunch is at 11:30, so I just hold off.
Putin33 (111 D)

It's an abomination that Obi lives in the agricultural wonderland of America and he does nothing but drink carbonated sugar-water & mediocre tea. My god if I lived in southern Cal I'd be gorging on organic produce and nuts.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
07 Dec 11 UTC
IIRC, obi doesn't sleep often or regularly, either, which can really fuck up your appetite. When I've pulled an all-nighter, I can go much longer without eating.
Mafialligator (239 D)
07 Dec 11 UTC
That's funny abge. I find if I haven't been sleeping I need to eat a lot more in order to remain functional, socially and intellectually. I get really loopy otherwise.

And just, yeah dude. Eat more. Seriously. Have you ever noticed how all animals bodies are built around the digestive system? Seriously check it out. Body plans are based entirely on that, and ways of life are all based around getting food. There's a reason for that. At the very least take nutritional supplements or something to make sure you're getting enough nutrients. Yikes.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
07 Dec 11 UTC
@Putin:

Well, I have peanuts sometimes, as they're usually convenient...and I thought the Midwest was the Bread Basket Agricultural Wonderland?

We grow tons of fruit here, sure, but still...Bread beats Fruit?

And...

I dunno, I have 1800 calories a day, via nutrition drinks and the meal I have...

And I generally try and have at least some combination of meat, noodles, and carrots...it's just meat, noodles, and carrots in the same portion every day for seven days for four weeks for forty-eight weeks.

So, not a lot of food, and food is boring...and it's just another dependency.

I don't like being dependent on anything more than I absolutely must.

Water is a must.
A meal a day is preferable.

Any other consumption seems like a luxury is all...it's not as if I'm in grade school and still have a ways to grow, either.

I dunno...I just don't care for or about food that much is all...
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
07 Dec 11 UTC
Also, trying to eat breakfast would be a logistical nightmare.

Wake up at 6:30 after 3/4 hours of sleep, shower, dress, catch the bus, sleep for an hour before class--unless I have a paper that's super-due--and then it's class until at least 11, and then usually there's another until 1220, and then I need time to tutor folks to make money, then a class until 335...

And by that time, breakfast is long since past...

Eating in the middle of the night is just more convenient.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
07 Dec 11 UTC
"So, not a lot of food, and food is boring...and it's just another dependency."

Yeah, cause all you eat is carrots and water!

California is the country's largest dairy producer. It produces half of America's fruits, vegetables and nuts. It employs over 25% of the country's ag workforce. California's ag sector is twice that of its nearest rival.

Mafialligator (239 D)

Yeah exactly abge. Eat different things and you'll understand what the big deal about food is.
Putin33 (111 D)

You have all those delicious wines too. If I were a religious man, I'd imagine Napa valley is what heaven looks like.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
07 Dec 11 UTC
Because THAT, at least, generally won't be taken away or lost due to hardship or anything of the sort...

Unless I'm DEAD, I'll probably be able to get some carrots, noodles, and water.

It's realistic.

Besides which, when you eat, you start with a surplus and end with a deficit...I just don't get the fun in eating something when you don't have to, really, unless it's the most amazing occasion ever...taste is pretty irrelevant to me to a large degree--I had a mostly taste-free diet growing up--and in any case, that's what tea and drinks are for..and THOSE are less expensive, and are more economical--

You eat something, it stays with you, if you want more you have to order more, and once it's gone, that's it, so if you liked it...well, there goes whatever made you happy.

You drink, and you can get that refilled, or buy some more pretty cheap, and it's renewable, so you don't have to worry about running short generally...and you just piss it out every now and then and you're on your way, no extra hassle during the day.

Whatever, I'm probably wrong--my friends all agree it's odd as well, so it's not as if this is an English vs. Math debate, I'm pretty much by myself in this regard--but that's just the way I'm programmed and function...and it's never failed me yet to get me through a semester, I don't pass out or anything...

And it's always nice to know, from my point of view, anyway, that if there's nothing to eat or I'm too busy to eat, I'm not going to feel horrible because of it.

Maybe everyone else feels better due to the endorphines and all, but, again, it's like a girlfriend in that regard:

I'd rather have a stable, dependable "relationship" with a friend/water and know it'll be there for me when I need it, than risk getting sick or whatever eating the wrong thing or losing a friend in a fight over whatever...

I'd also mention--

No sex and minimal food expenditures=FAR more time to read, write, and think about things, which I enjoy...

So three pleasures vs. two...

Meals with people are such a great way to socialize and talk, and discuss things, though. Not the best, but the best of the easy-to-arrange.
Putin33 (111 D)
07 Dec 11 UTC
Sex and eating do not take up much time. I could have sex and eat in less time than it takes to read your review of the Shakespeare movie. You could easily be a fruitarian or have a raw foods diet where you live and that requires no cooking whatsoever.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)

Well, I go out with people (I actually did today, we studied for our Brit. Lit. 800-1750 final) but I just order a Coke or hot water (I have my own tea and tea infuser on me) or both.

Gotcha obi.
Apart from suggesting Dr. Pepper instead, not much to complain about there.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
07 Dec 11 UTC
And cooking isn't really the issue, Putin...

I just don't like food all that much is all, it doesn't appeal to me...

Eating doesn't=pleasure for me, eating=breathing...

Just something you have to do to stay alive...but it's not really enjoyable.

Maybe you just need to enjoy food as a kid to enjoy it as an adult? (I hated being a kid anyway, to be honest, I was the type who always couldn't wait to be 10, then 13, then 16, then 18...once I hit 20 I sort of leveled off, that's a good number, thereabouts...a bit older would be better, but still, at least it's better than being 6 and have no one take you seriously or have no choice in matters.)
Mafialligator (239 D)
07 Dec 11 UTC
You are a strange person. First of all, there is no pleasure in life that isn't transient. Food is not unique in that sense.

Secondly, sex and food don't get in the way of my ability to read or think...they're different things.
Mafialligator (239 D)
07 Dec 11 UTC
Man, taking this side in the argument makes me feel like I'm hedonism bot from Futurama or something.
semck83 (229 D(B))
07 Dec 11 UTC
Actually, obi, breathing feels awesome. Pay attention sometime. Ahhh! A nice big gulp of air in your lungs.
Yeah, don't take that feeling for granted man.
Putin33 (111 D)

You'll appreciate childhood once you're an overeducated graduate working at a gas station while paying student loans.

There is nothing glamorous about paying rent and worrying about your next paycheck. I'd rather be playing with legos and watching cartoons.

Putin33 (111 D)
07 Dec 11 UTC
I don't think you need to like something as a kid. My palate is way different, anyway.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
07 Dec 11 UTC
LOL semck83...

I still don't know, Mafialligator, tell me:

How does sex stimulate the conversation? I mean, the actual act, not the closeness of the people, but just the sticking of one portion of your anatomy into another portion of someone else's...

Just doesn't seem all too interesting...and I'd always prefer tho have a great conversation with a girl and think of her in that context, as being extremely witty and smart...

Sex just seems like it'd ruin that, somehow...

And you're not Hedonism Bot--I'm the mechanical robotic persona here, it'd seem... ;)
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
07 Dec 11 UTC
@Putin:

I'm not taking out student loans, and my tuition is pretty low, and I have a fund for it.

Nice try.

And I'd rather be having late night conversations with a beautifully-intelligent girl (who's probably some other guy's girlfriend, but I'm about the least sexually-threatening guy out there in terms of competition, and anyway, anything below the face and brain and eyes I don't care about, so really, I'm probably pretty safe to talk to on that end, as well, my asshole reputation notwithstanding)...or, I guess, typing in on my laptop on a forum with YouTube open and papers to write and references to pretentiously make...

Than go to bed at a set time any day.
Putin33 (111 D)

How is literature like Shakespeare interesting if sex is uninteresting? My god half of his writings are about it. People have protested some of his bawdier plays.
