This Time On Philosophy Weekly: Chekhov and Plato Play a String Duet
In his dialogue "Phaedo," Plato's representation of Socrates makes the argument for a human "soul," and states that it's somewhat like a harmony from a harp, that is, representative and yet beyond the actual harp itself. In his short story "Ward No. 6," Chekhov's protagonist, Andrey Yefimitch, muses aloud that a broken violin, far from still being represented by a harmony, is just a heap of rubbish, as it's purely physical, so once broken, that's it. Which maestro's song's truer?

Will everyone in the game have to hit unpause or will games be forced unpause after 72 hours?

If people don't unpause and there is no forced unpause, how long until we should get a mod involved?

The Poor need jobs not handouts
The overwhelming basis of arguments put forth by supporters of Big Government on this board use "the poor" as a rational for almost everything.
The problem with this line of reasoning is the poor need jobs not handouts.
Handouts keep the poor poor and dependent.

500 Errors.
I think I'm causing them. I have internet explorer set to open it 500 times when I click on the WebDiplomacy link. And since I'm on all the time, I'm constantly refreshing the pages and stuff that crashes servers. Not to mention I know how to hack into the server if I wanted. I'm thinking about doing it just to show all of you how far I could go as the cult of personality here in WebDiplomacy World! Now give me 1200 D now!

Double mute button fail
When a page is loading I can see posts from a certain person I'm muting. When it fully loads they go away. That's fail #1. Fail #2 is that somehow, while a thread that I created was loading, I saw a post from someone I muted. I thought that people you mute can't see your threads?

Is this your list King Atom? Or a list you found somewhere?
King Atom (100 D)
03 Aug 11 UTC
After a long time of doing nothing but listen to music, I thought I'd put something like this together. But I have done most of this based on other lists that have already been made in combination with my own opinion and the opinions of several proffessional musicians that I know. I'm also looking at how many songs each band wrote and whether they were just successful from a few songs, or in almost everything they did/do.
Sweens18 (690 D)

I think The Planets Suite by Holst deserves a place. If not all of them maybe Mars or Jupiter. Also how bout Miles Davis, John Coltrane. I would make a case for Jimi being higher than 14 too, but he is there so ill take it.

What about more modern artists? Jack White in any band he is in. Also The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Strokes.
ulytau (541 D)
03 Aug 11 UTC
The needlessly overrepresented amount of outdated mainstream rock classics hardly suprises me, these lists usually silently substitute "greatest" for "stuff that everyone knows, respects and cannot argue against its inclusion because it would be a sign of poor taste". That's why they always look the same no matter the author.

And noone who is serious about music can say that Justin Bieber would be included on any list thanks to his album sales. He was double platinum in the USA, hardly worth a notice in the grand scheme of things.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

"I think The Planets Suite by Holst deserves a place. If not all of them maybe Mars or Jupiter."

+1

Also, Michael Jackson should be on there somewhere.
King Atom (100 D)
03 Aug 11 UTC
@Ulytau: Did you not read the context of me listing Justin Bieber? I have no clue what the hell he made, I was just using him as an example. Too many idiots think that what they hear on the radio is good music nowadays. And I'm not just doing some mainstream rock artists. If you enjoy some obscure crap that no one has heard of, good for you, but I put these on here because they're good. This whole feed is just me trying to say that people do not know what music is anymore.

Michael Jackson: #10
Red Hot Chili Peppers: #23
The Planets Suite: #4

Can I take a wild shot in the dark?

Johnny Cash?
ulytau (541 D)
03 Aug 11 UTC
The context of disregarding sales numbers as moot while listing only 6 artists from 17 who don't have an US diamond record in their discography? I mean yes, poor Bowie was only platinum at best and so pales in comparison with the rest. Also he sold approximately 140 million records in total. Sure, that's not mainstream at all.
King Atom (100 D)
03 Aug 11 UTC
Once again, this has nothing to sales records. If you're going to complain, at least read the other posts.

And no Johnny Cash.
ulytau (541 D)

Cool, that's why the list is so predictable that it looks like a job of either a bot or a music critic. It's a completely bland parade of iconic music acts. Who would've thought that an übermensch like you was so shallow...

Wings?
Wings? U2? AC/DC? Kansas? The Monkees? Red Hot Chili Peppers? The Eagles?

Come on, dude. WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT. There are so many questionable choices. These are not definitive objective lists (making one is entirely impossible). These are just, like, your opinion, man.

I suppose I'm an idiot for disagreeing?
spyman (424 D(G))
03 Aug 11 UTC
It's a very white list of artists too (with a couple of exceptions)What about Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Stevie Wonder (as a few examples). You have put a white Funk band, the Chilli Peppers, but what about the original funk music like Sly and the Family Stone or Parliament?
It is also very mainstream. Don't get me wrong these are all great artists. But it could do with a little more edge.
Are these your favorite artists? Or are there artists that you personally dig more than the ones on this list?
spyman (424 D(G))
03 Aug 11 UTC
Here is my list of artists on that list who should be immediately removed. They are not all bad (Wings was pretty bad) but not truly GREAT influential pioneering unique artists:
1. U2
2. Wings
3. Elton John
4. Kansas
5. The Red Hot Chilli Peppers
6. The Monkees
7. The Eagles

Well, this was my hardest attempt to not be biased. What would seem to make this better would be to have a vote...
Go ahead and vote for these candidates, plus you can add your own. Just +1 anything you'd like, just nothing >1.

If this is a fair competition, the whole thing will be ruined by trolls. So I'll give a few extra to those extra spectacular ones and put in my own vote.

The Beatles +1 (3)
U2 +1 (1)
Queen +1 (1)
The Rolling Stones (0)
Led Zeppelin +1 (2)
Pink Floyd +1 (1)
The Beach Boys +1 (1)
Elvis Presley +1 (2)
AC/DC +1 (1)
Michael Jackson +1 (3)
Simon & Garfunkel +1 (1)
Wings +1 (1)
Bruce Springsteen And The E Street Band +1 (1)
Jimi Hendrix (0)
Elton John +1 (1)
The Police +1 (1)
The Who +1 (1)
The Doors (0)
Kansas (0)
Bob Dylan (0)
The Monkees (0)
David Bowie (0)
Red Hot Chili Peppers +1 (1)
