Can anyone defend freedom?
Can anyone defend the idea that "people" can produce a better society by diminishing governmental control in exchange for increased libertarian imposition of civil freedoms on the government?

@ Putin33

<sigh> It's going to take me a lot of time to disprove your left wing bullshit.

"I do wonder how the right can be so against "taking other people's money" when that is precisely what capitalism does. People are paid less than the value of their labor in order for capital to make profits."

No. Socialism takes other peoples' money. Capitalism rewards those who are willing to work hard. Every day, I get up and go to work. My employer compensates me for my time and effort. I spend the money on goods and services so that the employees of those companies can get paid. Capitalism may not be perfect, but it works a hell of a lot better than any other system.

"That's mythology. That's like saying because "anyone" can win the lottery, winning the lottery is probable so therefore the rigid class disparities are just."

What rigid class disparities? Capitalism rewards hard workers and punishes lazy people. What the hell is wrong with that? If anything, Putin, your beloved communism has the worst class disparities out of any system.

"Not every, but almost every. Just because you can list one or two exceptions doesn't mean that's not the general rule. The system needs a couple of exceptions in order to brainwash people into believing that their struggles are justified so they don't rise up against the system."

Putin, ANYONE can get rich in a capitalist society. Anyone. All it takes is a lot of hard work. I was raising in a working-class family. A lot of my high school friends were lazy. They didn't go to college because their grades sucked. I studied hard every night and got a full-ride academic scholarship to a good university. Now I've got a great job as a police officer, and I just bought my own house. I did better than my parents, who did better than their parents. That's what capitalism is all about. Hard work. You're going to say that capitalism is all about the rich screwing everyone else, but that's just not true. I've never gotten screwed over by anyone. If I save my money carefully, I'll be rich by the time I retire. The guys that didn't try hard in high school, the guys that got mixed up with drugs? They live in trailer parks or worse, and work long, hard days in construction or roofing because they didn't work hard.

"controlling women's bodies, silencing anti-war dissent, warrantless wiretapping, Guantanamo Bay, torture, opposing equal rights for minorities, opposing equal rights for gays, opposing equal rights for women, and demanding the poor and middle class pay taxes while corporations pay none."

We don't control womens' bodies. We protect innocent babies.

We don't silence any dissent. We are the source of dissent.

We don't wiretap. We bend the rules a little so you can sleep at night, Putin.

We don't "torture". We extract valuable information from terrorists by any means necessary.

We don't oppose equal rights for minorities. We make sure that society is color blind.

Gays have the same rights as straight people.

Women have the same rights as men.

We don't demand that the poor and middle class pay taxes so that the rich/corporations don't have to. We want to lower taxes for everyone.

"Rightwing "freedom" is the freedom to starve, be unemployed, have no health insurance, and be discriminated against."

Wrong. Freedom is the freedom to be rewarded for hard work.

I really hope you don't believe your own bullshit, Putin.
Putin33 (111 D)
25 Jul 11 UTC
America rewards "hard work" by decreasing real wages for American workers as productivity has never been higher. That's "freedom" I suppose. The freedom to get paid less for more work. The freedom to work for 30 years and then have your job shipped overseas so a company can make more money off the backs of overworked, underpaid labor elsewhere. The freedom to have your pensions ripped off by unscrupulous CEOs. The freedom to be laid off right before you're eligible for Medicare and deprived of lifesaving health insurance. The freedom to have your ideas ripped off by a company who has the money to get a patent while you don't. The freedom to have the "best justice system money can by". The freedom to rape the planet, pollute our water, destroy our forests, annihilate wildlife, to make a couple bucks. (As you say, "fuck the planet". I'm sure your rightwing god would approve).

And of course, every rightwinger I know claims to have brought themselves up by their own bootstraps. That's all the right has to go on, anecdotal evidence that you can't verify. Usually when rightwingers claim they "worked hard" they mean for mommy and daddy's business.

And you care so much about babies until after they're born. Then it's cut post-natal care, cut assistance to mothers, cut childcare, cut all social programs which help young children, cut education. Any wonder why Mississippi is the biggest defender of the "unborn" but has the worst record on post-natal care? That's the rightwing idea of "defending children".

"work long, hard days in construction or roofing because they didn't work hard. "

...

Interesting. They work hard because they didn't work hard. But hard work is rewarded. But this current hard work is not rewarded?
Putin33 (111 D)
25 Jul 11 UTC
And you people absolutely do insist that the middle class and poor pay taxes while corporations pay none. Why did the Republicans just walk away from a budget deal that dared close tax loopholes for corporations who are paying *zero* taxes? Why do they instead insist that there be massive cuts to social security, medicare, education, and everything that helps the middle class get by?
Putin33 (111 D)
25 Jul 11 UTC
By "work hard" he means sitting in an office somewhere playing diplomacy.
gramilaj (100 D)

"We don't "torture". We extract valuable information from terrorists by any means necessary." says a lot for me.

I don't see how that's not saying "this isn't torture because I believe the ends justify the means".
SacredDigits (102 D)

Agreed with gramilaj, same with the "bend the rules" thing about wiretapping.
Putin33 (111 D)

"We don't wiretap. We bend the rules a little so you can sleep at night, Putin."

LOL, but "don't tread on me", right? If this isn't Orwellian doublespeak, I don't know what is. You're not helping me sleep, you're wiretapping people like me. You're infiltrating my groups. You're putting people like me on watch lists. This is your idea of "freedom" - dictatorship of the bourgeoisie.
SacredDigits (102 D)
25 Jul 11 UTC
I also find things like "gays have the same rights as straight people" to be kind of silly. Okay, yes. Sexual orientation isn't a protected class for EEO and such, so both gays and straights can be equally discriminated against because of sexuality. Only...the group that represents 10% of the population is far, far, far more likely to be discriminated against than the group that represents 90%. And gays are just as free to marry people of the opposite gender as straights! Only...one group wants to do that, and the other doesn't.
Putin33 (111 D)
25 Jul 11 UTC
And straight people have been forced to lie about their identity else be kicked out of the military via dishonorable discharge, and straights have been fired for saying they're straight or talking about their opposite-sex spouses in the classroom...right.
Gunfighter06 (224 D)

"America rewards "hard work" by decreasing real wages for American workers as productivity has never been higher."

Can you back that up? I believe that the minimum wage has increased consistently with inflation.

"The freedom to get paid less for more work. The freedom to rape the planet, pollute our water, destroy our forests, annihilate wildlife, to make a couple bucks. (As you say, "fuck the planet". I'm sure your rightwing god would approve)."

"That's all the right has to go on, anecdotal evidence that you can't verify."

What the fuck do you call your little rant? That's just as anecdotal as my post. Fucking hypocrite.

"Usually when rightwingers claim they "worked hard" they mean for mommy and daddy's business."

Still anecdotal. If you say the right goes on unverifiable anecdotal evidence, then why do you use it yourself?

"Then it's cut post-natal care, cut assistance to mothers, cut childcare, cut all social programs which help young children, cut education."

Not cut. Privatize. The private sector does more for less.

"pollute our water"

Come on, this isn't 1895. Our water is fine.

"destroy our forests"

People are more important than trees. Our "rightwing" God agrees.

"annihilate wildlife"

No one is intentionally "annihilat(ing) wildlife".

Besides, all of that is irrelevant because communists give less of a crap about the environment than capitalists. Look at China. Their environment is the worst in the world.

You're going to have to do better than that, Putin.
SacredDigits (102 D)

Just remember. If you don't work hard at the right time for it to be rewarded, you're faced with a life of working hard without it being rewarding, but hard work is rewarded.

The minimum wage has always, since the beginning of its existence, lagged significantly behind inflation. It gets raised due to inflation, yes, but far after the fact.

It has been going down in spending power. Check it out. It was best in the late 60's, hit the lowest ebb since then in 2006 and is only now climbing slightly. This shows minimum wage as adjusted for 2010 dollars, year by year.
Gunfighter06 (224 D)

@ SacredDigits

Thanks for fact-checking me. I stand corrected.

@ Putin33

Okay, fine. The min. wage was going down, but now it's headed back up. What difference does it make? State minimum wages are often higher than the federal minimum wage. Your precious union workers often make well over 20 dollars an hour, and even nonunion blue collar workers in the South make 10-15 dollars an hour.
Putin33 (111 D)
25 Jul 11 UTC
"Not cut. Privatize. The private sector does more for less."

And how do you propose to privatize programs like WIC? Who is going to pay for them genius? And the private sector does so great that's why private insurance has 30% overhead and bureaucratic costs while Medicare has 3%. That's why government healthcare has higher customer satisfaction ratings than private healthcare.

" Our water is fine."

Says the guy who is on record saying "fuck the planet".

"People are more important than trees."

Yeah have fun living on Easter Island. We'll see how many people you'll have then.

"No one is intentionally "annihilat(ing) wildlife"."

Yes they are. Hunting endangered species is a billion dollar industry. Corporations pollute and oppose regulations which protect wildlife. Commercial fishing is annihilating fish, whale, and other populations. Because corporate profits are more important than animals, etc, right?

"Their environment is the worst in the world. "

"What the fuck do you call your little rant? That's just as anecdotal as my post. Fucking hypocrite. "

No I can give documentary evidence of these things occurring. Not "my mommy and daddy worked so hard".

"Can you back that up?"

http://www.workinglife.org/wiki/Wages+and+Benefits:+Real+Wages+(1964-2004)

1964 real wages = 302.52
2004 real wages = 277.57

http://money.cnn.com/2008/08/27/news/economy/state_of_working_america/index.htm

"The median real income for working-age middle-income families in the United States dropped $2,000 between 2000 and 2007, from about $58,500 to $56,500, the U.S. Census Bureau reported Tuesday."

"That's because 90% of the growth in U.S. workers' income from 1989 to 2007 went to the top 10% highest earners, EPI said. Income for the top 1% grew 204% since 1989, and the top 0.1% saw their income grow 425% in that span."

They're a developing country with 1.3 billion people. They're the world's leader in solar energy production and renewable energy technology. Putin33 (111 D)

Wages are about more than the decreasing spending power of the minimum wage, although that is one aspect. I'm talking about overall real wages. They've declined, while the rich have increased their income by leaps and bounds. That's "freedom".
Putin33 (111 D)
25 Jul 11 UTC
And now we go from "hard work is rewarded" to "what difference does it make". That's what every rightwinger does as soon as the mythology about the American dream is destroyed. Backpedal, retreat, backpedal, retreat.

@ SacredDigits

"But this current hard work is not rewarded?"

Sure it is. One of my friends who does roofing is saving up to go to a community college. He's enrolling this fall. He's beginning to claw his way up.

"And gays are just as free to marry people of the opposite gender as straights! Only...one group wants to do that, and the other doesn't."

Exactly. The argument that gays don't have the same rights as straights is silly. They do have the same rights.

@ gram

"I don't see how that's not saying "this isn't torture because I believe the ends justify the means"."

I really don't give a shit about the "human rights" of terrorists. Nor should anyone else. These despicable creatures do not have the same rights as normal humans.

@ Putin33

The government should be worried about someone like you, Putin. I would not be surprised if you and your red friends blew up a government building. You're a bad guy. Good guys like me can sleep at night because the government is keeping people like you awake.

"And straight people have been forced to lie about their identity else be kicked out of the military via dishonorable discharge"

Gay people don't have to lie. No one asks.

"By "work hard" he means sitting in an office somewhere playing diplomacy."

I'm not sitting in an office. I have Mondays off. I would never play webDiplomacy on duty. I don't have an office. I have a desk in the police station and a squad car, and almost all of my time is spent in the latter.

That reminds me, what are YOU doing right now to contribute to society, Putin?

That's rich considering it's your ideological brethren who are shooting up leftwing youth camps. It's your ideological brethren who blow up abortion clinics. It's your ideological brethren who blew up the federal building in Oklahoma City. It's your ideological brethren who are openly talking about assassinating the President. It's your ideological brethren who tried to murder a Congresswoman and ended up murdering children instead. It's your ideological brethren who absolutely insist on an unrestricted right to stockpile arsenals of weapons. It's your ideological brethen who have been responsible for pretty much every single act of domestic terrorism in America in the past 25 years. And the ironic part is you freaks have run this country most of the time, so why are you all so angry?

They have a low consumption rate because no one has cars except for party officials. It doesn't matter how much renewable energy they have; they still have a shit ton of coal plants.

"Yes they are. Hunting endangered species is a billion dollar industry. Corporations pollute and oppose regulations which protect wildlife. Commercial fishing is annihilating fish, whale, and other populations. Because corporate profits are more important than animals, etc, right?"

Feeding human beings is more important than the well-being of fish.

I'm not opposed to gay marriage personally, but I think the left needs to come up with a better argument than "equal protection under the law" because that's an absurd argument.

@ Putin33

That's rich considering it's your ideological brethren who are shooting up leftwing youth camps. It's your ideological brethren who blow up abortion clinics. It's your ideological brethren who blew up the federal building in Oklahoma City. It's your ideological brethren who are openly talking about assassinating the President. Stop saying "ideological brethren". You and I both know that my views are not nearly as radical as theirs. I'm a police officer, Putin33. If I had been at those terrible incidents, I would have filled all of those terrorist fuckers with .45 caliber holes.

"It's your ideological brethren who absolutely insist on an unrestricted right to stockpile arsenals of weapons."

Are you referring to the Second Amendment argument there? If so, I support my "ideological brethren". I believe any law-abiding citizen with no criminal history and no mental illness should be able to own and carry any weapon they want. I've been to gun shows and GOA demonstrations, and I can honestly say that I've never felt endangered at one.
I'm reminded of a quote from Anatole France...

"The law, in all of its majestic equality, forbids the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread."

Frankly, I suspect gunfighter is essentially doing an elaborate work of performance art. Otherwise, he's either fourteen years old or willfully blind.

I believe any law-abiding citizen with no criminal history and no mental illness should be able to own and carry any weapon they want. Awesome. So, in Gunfighterland, as a law-abiding citizen without a criminal record, I can own and carry a mortar and a shitload of sarin gas shells?

And regarding threat at gun shows and GOA demonstrations, I don't think you're exactly the enemy of the heavily armed attendees. How safe would you feel at a hypothetical radical leftist black nationalist meeting where everyone was packing while denouncing you personally and every statement you've made in public and carrying signs threatening you personally and your ideological cohorts?

"Wages are on the decline because of the recession. It's not because the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. Everyone is losing money in this economy."

Except I gave you a chart that preceded the recession and that listed wages over the past 40 years, try again.

"They have a low consumption rate because no one has cars except for party officials."

Uh right, go to any big city in China and when you get back you can eat your crow. You can't throw a rock without hitting a Volkswagen in Shanghai. Keep your story straight. One minute it's "China has a horrible record" and there are all these complaints about energy demand in China, the next minute supposedly only party officials drive cars.

"Back up the "hunting endangered species is a billion dollar industry" part."

http://www.livemint.com/2008/03/07001047/Profits-from-wildlife-poaching.html

"Feeding human beings is more important than the well-being of fish. "

And what happens when the fish are depleted so there's no more fish to feed your humans you supposedly care about?

"Feel free. "

http://www.idahostatesman.com/2011/03/10/1559593/as-jobs-move-overseas-laid-off.html

The story is a 'feel good' story about long-time workers laid off by their company going back to school with the help of *gasp* a federal job training assistance program.

You have stories like these:

"Nampa resident Darla Stewart, 47, a former Micron work force development manager with 22 years at the company, also took advantage of the program when she was laid off in 2009.

A case of a 55 year old being fired without cause.

Looking for sitter
I'll be away for 5-6 days next week and still have a couple games running. It shouldn't be too huge of a time commitment if anyone is willing, since one is a 4 day phase world game in which I have only a single unit. The other is a game in the summer gunboat tournament, so someone not part of that would be preferred.
I hope I'm not asking too much with only a few days notice, but if someone with a good reputation would PM me saying they can, I would be extremely grateful.

gunboats are stupid and ruin diplomacy
the point of diplomacy is exactly what it says. DIPLOMACY. When we get rid of ingame messaging it does away with the crucial factor of diplomacy and results in no improvement of luck. It actually makes the game far more random and chancy than it should be. I believe that we need to get rid of this option to allow DIPLOMACY to take its course. Please add your comments about this.

Can anyone defend, I mean remember, centrists?
Why is politics so polarized today--what happened to the centrists? Is it a function of the political parties controlling the vast majority of campaign contributions?

Can anyone defend posts asking in the title for posters to defend something?
If you can--well, I suppose you're needed on one of the many other generic "defend" posts...

Minor bug
I'm not sure if others in this game are experiencing the same oddity, but in
http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=63232, which is a gunboat, it's telling me I have an unread global message and I can't figure out how to "read" it or otherwise fix the problem. Thanks.
