Yeah, I joined in 2007 when I was still a Star Wars kid...I haven't seen the films...well, actually, pretty much for that long, right after I joined was when I really started to focus on theatre and English--before that as a kid I wanted to be a writer, but be a lawyer and then politician in my spare time...yeah, I liked Napoleon--still do, though not like the obsessed Bonaparte-wanna-be I must've been back then, lol--a lot and thought politics was just that easy...

If I'd waited a while longer, I probably would have named myself "EsnChekov" or "DataChekov" for my favorite Star Trek characters (Spok and Picard round out my Top 4, for those keeping score) and if I did it today almst certainly either a play on something Nietzsche wrote or one of his characters (I'm "Lord Macbeth" on a Literature forum I go on occaisionally...Hamlet was already taken, so I had to go with my second-favorite Shakespearean tragic hero.)

But I still like Obi-Wan Kenobi even still, since he's the old Merlin-like character and those Merlin-types were some of my favorites as a kid, and he DOES do a lot of thinking in the original movie, spouting his Force Philosophy, so I guess it's not totally misfitting... :)

Draugnar is from Tolkien. It is supposed to have a ' over the a, but it's a pain to write. In Quenyan, draug means wolf and nar means fire (when used with the '). Unfortunately, nar without the ' could also be nar without a ^, which in Sindarin means rat (and draug means the same in both), and nar with no special mark of any sort means red in Quenyan. But I've used that name for a long time, starting in the mid 90s when I played Middle-earth Play-By-Mail with GSI. My first time, I was assigned the Dog Lord (one of the Nazgul) and I needed a name for one of my newly created characters so I pulled out my copy of Return of the King which has a full Quenyan dictionary in the back and Draugnar was born.

Sacred Digits comes from the fact that the first time I needed to make a name for a messageboard, I thought my first choice would be taken (I later learned it wasn't), so I added my work number extension to the end of said choice as it was the first "random" number I could think of. I also, foolishly, displayed my e-mail address, which was my work e-mail address.

I picked up a stalker, and she e-mailed me strange things at work, and kept trying to get my address. While I was previously all about revealing what the number meant, I knew that way would bring madness now, since she knew where I worked, generally. So I made up that it had religious importance to me and referred to it as the "Sacred Digits." She didn't believe that, but it was the only explanation she got. I ended up preferring Sacred Digits to the original handle I had, and the rest is history.

Actually, way back in the bbs days I went through a number of handles because each was a bad idea of some sort, and I'm sure eventually Sacred Digits will be too.

I used to be DieHard when I was playing Combat Flight Simulator online oh so long ago. I wasn't the best shot, but I rarely fell either. I could make a P38 Lightening twist like nobody's business. :-)

Which broughts me to the point that banning racial slurs is no fun. Most people are not meaning it when they call each other these names and the few who mean it seriously are so easily recognizable, that there's no reason to create a special measure against them.

My screen name originated from back in 2002, when I was playing the computer version of Halo: CE, and when you got killed by somebody it said, "So-and-so Killed you." It was originally A_Puddle, which it still is on some of my older accounts, Xbox live mainly. But I've been using it for so long now, that it is basically my online name. Somewhere out there is another Puddle though, because I've had to use different iterations, Puddle210, PuddleAE, etc. But if you see a Puddle, it's a safe bet that it's me.

@Draug: language is a skill that some people are better at than others. My daughter's pediatrician in Chicago (from China) was almost incomprehensible--it turned out that she had a serious learning disability, and that her Mandarin skills weren't much better than her English skills. On another note, she was great. I told people we had the best pediatrician in the US...after several years, we came into her office one day to see that the award she'd won for being the best pediatrician in the US.

Also, nobody forces you to learn Spanish. However, people who prefer to speak Spanish are doing exactly what they should be doing--using their right of economic self-determination to spend money with people who are willing to provide them with the best service. Nobody has to speak Spanish unless they want to sell stuff to people who would rather speak Spanish. That's (in part) what America is about.

well, little do people much know that my old account was also little know about as well. it was Shadowlurker , ahh those were the days when my foolish self thought i was being sneaky, and by giving my self a mysterious sounding name I would indeed become mysterious.

ahh but to the really meaty stuff, I was a Runescaper back in the day, and my tag was R0binh0d 8, And of course i focused on ranging abilities(yes i mean bow and arrow). but a few years back i taught myself how to program(i.e. c and c++), so my 'hacking' handle was robinhood, but i had made the misfortune mistake as to spell it with two o's.

Needless to say i was ridiculed as being an amateur hacker who couldnt spell correctly, but i kept at programing and I soon became quite good, but i kept the same handle as it had sort of stuck with me no matter what i changed it to.

And that leads me to here, its my godforsaken right to look stupid for misspelling robinhood, and i shall wear it with pride.

Since we're all sharing the story of where our names came from in this thread...I used to play Kingdom of Loathing, it was fun, and I enjoy lame puns. But when I signed up I couldn't for the life of me think of a funny name that sounded fantasyish enough, but also silly enough for KOL, so I asked my friend for a suggestion and he was like "How about Lord Mafialligator of Ocelot?" And I was like, perfect! Then I signed up with it, and started using a shortened version of it in a number of other places including here. And then he was all "You do realize I stole that from [a well known internet guy somewhere else that I think he might have said was something awful, but i'm not sure], right?" And I was all "Oh shit, now I'm stuck with a name that makes me look like a derivative hack. Thanks."

@Pastoralan - I was referring to people trying to sell themselves or their products to me. As you say, I can excersize *my* financial clout by not hiring a consultant whose communication skills are subpar.
