Raids in Belgium on Terror Cells; 100+ Arrested Across Europe
http://www.cnn.com/2015/01/15/world/belgium-anti-terror-operation/ "A Western Intelligence source tells CNN that the ongoing terror threat appears to involve up to 20 sleeper cells of between 120 to 180 people ready to strike in France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands." 2014 was a year that will remembered for a lot of violence in the Middle East...might we remember 2015 as the year that violence came to Europe and the West?

Can't Ready Up Building fewer units than earned?
I want to save one of my builds for later. I entered one build but left the other blank since I don't want to use it yet. The order won't allow me to 'Ready' up. Will the one build still go through? Is this a bug, or is it a rule that I must use all my builds?

Mafia Sign Up Thread
If you're interested in playing a game beginning sometime after January 11, post here. I'll take on the GM role alone initially but I would love to have a co-GM if anyone is interested in that.

We can also discuss details of the next game. Preliminarily, there will be no SK and two primary factions (town/mafia). I would love to get creative with power roles if others are interested too.

Boko Haram in Nigeria

A similar number of casualties to catastrophic terrorist events like 9/11 and yet this has been reduced to a sentence on the scrolling text at the bottom of your TV screen. Funny how some lives are less important than others.

@Octavious since when is Britain pouring money into the EU? As far as I know they are one of the largest profiteers (in absolute terms) from EU payouts… (This doesn't invalidate your point, which I fully agree with).

@Thucy albeit I agree with your stance, news appearances themselves won't do the trick. Further, the sad story here is not that African miseries are largely ignored but that African progress is. Even taking Nigeria's problems into account the Africa of the mid 2010s is very different from the Africa of 2000. The best we could do with SSA countries is to treat them just as any country else. More precisely, money is more expensive for people in SSA compared to us so we should lower the barriers to access money via cheaper financial products (I have no expertise in what kind of financial products are most appropriate, so I will beg the argument here) that helps them to easier investments overall, while not reducing the accountability of their governments. But I remember that you intended to write your thesis on the subject, did you? What were your results?

We've not taken out more than we've put in since the 70s. The UK is a huge net contributor, although a decent handful of nations pay more per capita.

"We could end poverty if we wanted to. We just don't want to."

"Throwing money at other rich people doesn't work. But direct cash transfers to poor people do work."

So we just open a few branches of the Bank of the United States of America for Africa and send off 1 billion debit cards? $5,000 each is $5 TRILLION DOLLARS. That's almost half the United States economy.

Dream those dreams...
Scheme those schemes...

@ Thucy: What ludicrous ignorance you display. Don't worry I forgive you for your disgusting and self-indulgent personal attacks and name calling against me.

Truth is, Africa has always been fucked up. The likes of Boko Haram has been happening for millenia. Of course it's only fucked up from a western point of view. Take away the west and the awful parts of asia/africa culture becomes normal, just as it was for thousands of years before the very recent rise of the west. But hey Thucy is going to 'fix it' all by patronizing a few people with his greasy coins.

You're american right Thucy? There's lots of people in USA that need help. I hear there's 100k+ lost souls living in New Yorks underground system for starters. Yet these people don't deserve your help, but the exotic Africans do? Seems like there is quite the patronizing colonial attitude going on here.

+1 Jeff Kuta. At least some people here understand how the world truly works - discipline and self-responsibility. Not whiny victim-hood and demands for hand-outs.
Maybe some people are too used to solving all their problems with Daddys platinum card.

Actually as I finish writing this I can't help laughing out loud at the idea that we gift Africa with 500B. Man that would be quite the bloodbath! Remember Live Aid? That was a nasty civil war. Your naivete is breath taking Thucy - how old are you again?

This whole thread is pathetic.

First of all any time "The West" decides it knows better and goes in to fix problems in other countries, they usually just fuck them up even further.

Second, what makes any of you retards think you are right to lay judgements outside of the political-cultural context that prevails in Nigeria?

Lastly, people have a responsibility to look after their own welfare - doing it for them degrades their ability to do it for themselves.

So tsk if you must, but STFU and refrain from talking as if you know anything.

@octavious I rechecked, you are right, since three years ago, Britain has indeed joined the ranks of (overall) net contributors and has been one for the last 8 years. Still not very impressed. France contributed more overall (per capita and year of membership) and during the last decade, my second home country paid, well, in an average year half of what Britain paid net in a decade (if one assumes the last decade as sole base) (even more adjusted per capita).
X3n0n (216 D)

@fiedler please, don't be unjust. Things like Boko Haram happened everywhere in the world for millennia (eg. Catholics, Hussites, Savonarola, to name only Western movements). And more and more (I am too lazy to check the statistics thoroughly, so I won't say "most") African states have gotten their shit together.

""The likes of Boko Haram has been happening for millenia."

Bahaha, Thucy are you that naive? Warlords and bandits haven't slaughtered people by the thousands since the beginning of man? How is it racist to say that? It isn't racist, it just makes him more aware of history than you. But I have a hard time believing that you honestly don't know about the violence of history.
fiedler (1293 D)

I love those anti-camping spikes - such an elegant solution to the homeless problem.

The hilarious thing here young Thucy, is you have completely misunderstood my argument from the get go. I don't advocate not caring, I was simply protestign against the feaux-caring of hippocrite liberals who post threads like this and then when asked what they are going to do about the problem, reveal they have no intention of doing anything whatsoever my making a sarcastic reply.

You, Thucydides, have made up all my crimes in your own head, seemingly so you can go on a holier-than-thou spiel... Not that I'm complaining because its been hilarious to see just how clueless and self-deceiving you are right now.

Hi Bo

" you might have a point"

I live in New Zealand, not USA. We have what we call a welfare state here. The very VERY few 'homeless' people we have here are crazy fucks who are offered shelter but CHOOSE to live on the street.

So fuck your assumptions, darling ;)

Yes, and ssorenn lives in the USA. He lives a few short miles from me, actually. See, I addressed his post, so my point was directed at him. I'm glad that in New Zealand, the people who are homeless choose to be, and though I highly doubt that's entirely true, I'll let that go. In Chicago and in the United States, businesses are known to pay for the erection of what we call "homeless spikes." These are placed in spots where a homeless person or people are known to sleep at night. These employers think that it is a better use of their funds to put up spikes that could physically harm someone than to offer the homeless person or people there are couple of bucks to sleep somewhere else. That would be a win-win, but they go for spikes anyway.

This one's under a bridge in China. It's not just our problem.

The one move support arrow is obvious. I also give fake supports for my own units to point allies down a path. (Of course this assumes our allies open and read the expanded detail maps. And allies may need to go a couple maps back to get the whole story.) What do you do?
