On Time
Two interesting articles that I thought could serve as a starting point for a discussion on time. How does time as we perceive it differ from time as a property of the universe? What meaning can humans extract from a clock that is so accurate it keeps different time on the floor or on a table?

Next question!
Should I get this one? 25% off, now €37,49.
I heard it's good, but is it good enough for that price for a casual gamer like me, who will perhaps not be able to give it the time to enjoy 'all of it'?

Threads are now being locked, without breaking any rules whatsoever, because "they serve no purpose." (Coincidentally, said threads had a high concentration of posts critical of the mods, and of particular mods almost universally held to be hugely overreactive, in particular).

Speed of electrons: calculated/theorised based on what observations?
I understand that you can calculate the speed of an electron if you know it's time and place at various times, but I can't imagine how one would observe these things in the first place. Presumably one observes something else and uses calculations based on a theory combined with these observations, but I'd like to know what those actual observations are.

Austria can be brutal at tournaments, according to Edi, with time limits involved, Italy is highly motivated to stab Austria for quick gains... Good luck with the rest of the tourney ab, thanks for the updates, but don't forget to chat with the six other people during your game rather than posting here! ;-)

So I have this dream of going to a ftf tournament, claiming to have never played before and wanting to give the game a try, and seeing how far I can get by being nice to people and pretending to be new. Based on the experiences of people who've actually been to a ftf tournament, would this even have a chance of working, or would they just all gang up on the "new" guy?

Game 2 was rough. No other way to put it. I made some serious mistakes, but I also feel there was a lot working against me.

I planned a Key Lepanto with Italy. Very risky, especially compared to my usual conservative play, but I figured fuck it's Carnage go big or go home. I think it would have worked, except Russia moved to GAL *and* Germany moved to TYR. GAL was my bad for not talking better to Russia, but TYR? Nothing I could do about that. Oh, and by the way, both England *and* France opened with Puddings.

Russia ended up only taking RUM, but Italy held in TRIE, bounced Germany in VEN and bounced me in GRE. So, by the Fall of 1902, I resigned myself to be Turkey's puppet in exchange for my life. I continued trying to negotiate with Italy, but it never amounted to much. I eventually got back into TRIE, but it cost me VIE. Meanwhile, Turkey just got larger all around me.

My biggest mistake was when I secured Germany's support from BUD to VIE and I had convinced Turkey BUD was supporting him to RUM. I could have moved right into VIE and built another Army. Instead I followed through with the support to RUM. I honestly don't know why. But that seriously fucked me because I lost my only chance of getting a build. Russia no longer trusted me. Germany no longer trusted me. Italy was still harassing me in the West.

From there it was just a slow death my units wandered around, never getting above 2 centers until ultimately I wasn't needed for the draw and was cut. It's surprisingly stressful when you only have 2 units, but still an enjoyable game and I certainly learned a lot.

Game 3 will be starting at 6. I'm just praying I don't get Germany.

*Russia/Italy/Austria triple alliance that had already gobbled up Turkey.

I wish I could tell you more but I don't have any records. Which as a chess player, I still find it incredibly odd that at FtF tournaments one is not required, less encouraged, to keep all former moves.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

@Peter, what matters to most experienced tournament players is not how knew you are but whether you can be trusted to write competent orders. Even if you feigned incompetence, you might run into players who would still try to work with you in order to use you to bludgeon their rivals.

In my experience, it's the short-range planners who tend to want to gang up on the new guy. (See, that first one was me demonstrating my webdip cred.)

Game 3 was by far the best game for me this weekend. Partly because I was warmed up and because I got Russia, which I tend to be stronger in. A big part, though, was that Austria was new to Carnage as well, and we were able to form a bond as outsiders.

My main goal was to quickly take out Turkey, for normal reasons, but all because how deadly he was as a player. Luckily Germany was the friendly France of Game 1, so I was pretty sure my north would be safe. With Austria we were able to quickly lock down the Balkans, but Italy was, understandably, upset with how closely we were working together, so refused to offer help against Turkey. He didn't attack Austria either, though, so we were able to slowly route him out.

I was very focused in the South so I'm not exactly sure what happened, but at some point Germany got real big real fast. I didn't leave myself nearly as open as I had in previous games, but I did find 2 units on an undefended WAR. Luckily, by this time, Turkey was gone and I was able to use his centers to fight off Germany and later England.

France quickly crumbled and it became clear that Italy and we had to put aside any differences we may have. We launched a 3 pronged attack against the EG in which Italy locked down the South West, although he unfortunately wasn't able to reliably hold MAR, Austria headed straight North, although he could never get into MUN, and I went for Scandinavia, although I ultimately lost it and some of my home SCs.

For a long time we battled around Northern Russia. I made some clever moves that got me back my centers and at one point put me at the top of the board. There was no way for me to hold them though and I quickly went back down. Austria and Italy were generous enough to loan me some centers to ensure all of our units were on the frontline, which is the only reason I didn't collapse to Germany.

Probably 2 hours of the game we spent with very little movement. I'd take SWE but lose NWY. I'd take MOS but lose WAR, etc. We tried to get England to stab Germany, but for whatever reason he just wasn't interested. For 4 years we tried to draw but someone always voted against it. Eventually the South was completely locked down and EG took enough of my north to get them in 1st and 2nd place on the board. That was good enough for someone because the draw finally went through. I had considered taking GRE from Austria the very last turn to tie for 2nd, but the risk of that giving England the solo was just too great to risk.

I'm very happy with how things turned out and was very glad that I could have a productive alliance with Austria where neither of us was subservient to the other. Going in to the game we said the two of us combined were probably as good as one average player here and it seems we were right. : )
