A Diplomacy Game for Literature Lovers?
Well, we've done Star Trek Diplomacy before, each power corresponding to one of the powers from Trek...anyone up for playing a game where each player of a power (we'll say Turkey counts for the whole Middle East to make it easier) takes on the persona of a great author from said country? Ex., Shakespeare/Chaucer/Dickens for England, Hugo/Proust/Racine for France, Goethe for Germany, Dostoyevsky/Tolstoy (not that one!) for Russia, etc...?

Canada's economic problem
So I am an econ major in my first year of university, so obviously I know very little compared to others about economics. However Canada has a rather strange economic problem (which I will explain below) and I think I have a viable solution to solve it. Can some of the greats on this site explain why my solution wont work (as why isn't it on the table as a solution)

Genie
You come across a genie, and you get one wish, assume that the genie will properly carry out your wish, not malicious misunderstand the intent. Only rule is no asking for an infinite stream of wishes (or anything that would be tantamount to this).

I could pay off the debt over time. The problem with any gob of money is one would want to invest it so one could continue to use the interest to pay for things, and not the principle, and that would have a negative impact on the economy as well.

"Immortality, obviously."...wrong, wish for a happy immortality with everyone you love

I'd probably just wish for people to stop multi accounting though

jmo, happiness and love are emotions inside you, not something in the world around you. Wishing for eternal happiness and love would turn you into some sort of zombie who is happy and loving by default.

Screw omnipotence. I want omniscience. I'd rather know everything than be "all poweful".
"Also as long as the amount of money you had wasn't widely known, and you didn't spend too much all at once (anything larger than a stastically insignificant amount) 100 Trillion dollars wouldn't necessarily have any effect on the economy"

Problem is that my bank would immediately know I have $100T (presuming it's placed in a bank account; I don't really want to have to have a "money room" in my apartment where I stuff $100T), and then their records would change to indicate this, and then shit would go south in a hurry.

@omniscience/omnipotent/mindreading - That's creepy and terrifying (omnipotence only if you choose to use it for mind-reading). One's thoughts are the final sanctuary of privacy. I would have to think this fundamentally immoral.

"Screw omnipotence. I want omniscience. I'd rather know everything than be "all poweful"."

If you know everything you'd be pretty close to all powerful. The only exception being when a situation arose that had no solution.

Dude, have you ever watched "What Women Want"? I just want that, but with an on/off switch. Think about it. At work you get to do *exactly* what your boss wants every time and put yourself on the fast track for promotion. Once you're high up and you're doing negotiations for other companies you can read the other delegation's minds and know what their red lines are. And then on the weekends you're the greatest man ever for any women you choose. Come on. It'd be fantastic.

And you'd be able to blackmail pretty much every leader on the planet and use this power to make yourself the first leader of the UN with any real power and bring about a new age of peace and prosperity :D

I may be verging on the completely insane with this one, but what about a wish for little cartons of milk in hotel rooms which actually taste of milk?

Sorry, but it's innately human to push the boundaries. When you come in at 9 to work you're trying to figure out what would get you ahead with the boss, when you work late at 7 you're unlocking his office with the key whose location you mind-read to get some sensitive papers out of his desk to blackmail him into a promotion.

Besides, if you're going to be a mind-reader, just go all-in and spend your time in the bad parts of town. You know how big an influence you could be on somebody else's life? You'd understand people as well as they understand themselves. Go sit down, talk to people. Change some goddamn lives. Don't waste it on the corporate world and chasing women, you can succeed at those without mind-reading.

@ Draugnar

I could pay off all US debt, give a few trillion to the military-industrial complex just to see what happens, set up a 40 trillion dollar rainy day fund in case the Democrats get back into power, give a few trillion to Veterans' Affairs, donate to a handful of charities, and live in absolute luxury with the rest of the money.

lol wait a sec gunfighter, republicans rack up just as much debt as Dems do, right?

Yes, dems spend more, but neither party has shown itself capable of balancing the budget.

Yes, I know Obama isn't on there, and I'm not defending him - I'm just saying you can't really make that insinuation.
@Eden - you're right. Corporate advancement isn't the way to go. I much prefer what Octavious would do with my superpower :D
Omniscience would be my first wish choice. It's evidently the best pick possible under any circumstances.

Unfortunately, this isn't a 3 wishes thing and I can't ask for unlimited range, force & precision telekinesis for the second, and removing the ability for genies to grant wishes and otherwise affect the space-time continuum any further from the point this wish was granted as my third and final choice.

I would wish to have the ability to kill anybody by touching them on the top of the head, while being immortal myself.

I would then touch myself on top of the head and laugh as the world exploded.
Actually, you know what I'd wish for? A gate-based teleportation system. In an instant, it would render trucking, shipping, the whole freight transportation industry obsolete and help fight global warmi....

Scratch that. If I really wanted to help the world with a wish, I'd wish for a permanent, stable, sustainable climate with predictable weather patterns. BAM, solved global warming.

Show Me Something Interesting
The other day, someone told me I am too caught up in the past to function appropriately. It was then made a point that my taste in music accurately depicted the same conceptual view of my personality. So tell me, strangers, what is better today than it was yesterday? And can someone please explain the appeals of ANY form of modern music? I'm not sorry when I say that I am satisfied with listening to this for the rest of my life: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQ_JAgHxR14
