Poor Putin... Grad student on mommy and daddy's dime can't keep up financially with Draugnar, a once US Marine and current programmer with just a lowly Associate's Degree from a Community College who has actually made his own way in life.

Mommy and daddy's dime, haha, funny. And how many "lowly" Associates degree grads graduated in the shitty economy of the 2000s and have rich wives to bail them out?

Rich wives? Since when is my wife rich?
Draugnar (0 DX)
01 Jan 12 UTC
@Anti - They are the most likely. There are a couple others that had good seasons, but they aren't QBs and the sportswriters all say they'd have to have record breaking seasons, which they didn't, to have a shot.
Draugnar (0 DX)
02 Jan 12 UTC
Putin must be confusing me with Senator McCain. My wife has contributed about 300K total over the last 20+ years (less than 15K per year average). She hasn't worked at all in the last 6 years while I've made, well we won't go into complete details, but the last 6 have seen income totalling over half a mil on my part.
SacredDigits (102 D)

I heard that Flynn actually delivered three babies and single-handedly defeated a terrorist plot plot during half time.

But I might be willing to take Draugnar's bet. It depends on when they announce the awards because I can't guarantee having an extra 20 bucks until about Super Bowl time.
Draugnar (0 DX)
02 Jan 12 UTC
You don't have to contribute right away if you lose. I'll give until Superbowl Sunday.

And the Broncos lost so the Bengals are going to the playoffs! Woot!

Cam Newton all the way. Draug, you're that confident in Dalton? I'm glad to make a bet, but let me pony up some snow shoveling money when it finally snows here in New England
SacredDigits (102 D)
02 Jan 12 UTC
Alright, I have my $20 planned out then.

And if anyone but Dalton or Newton wins, I'll go ten.
Putin33 (111 D)
02 Jan 12 UTC
Broncos & Bengals in the playoffs, wow. Poor.

The NFL was very top heavy this year. No wild card surprises this time around.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
02 Jan 12 UTC
Meh...I never thought I'd say this, but I'm content with Alex Smith.

He's no Montana or Young, but he's a tough guy who'll run for the extra yards head on, and can run Harbaugh's offense well, and hit fade routes nicely...

Not a game-breaker, but not a back-breaker at QB...he's decent...maybe even approaching good.

(Plus I got a jersey of his for my birthday, so now I'm invested in him.) ;)

Shame the Raiders couldn't capitalize on Tebow's flop of a day...I hate the Raiders, but I'll take them over Tebow, but just too many penalties and no defense.

13-3 and a first round bye...

Besides the Packers, Ravens, Saints, and Patriots...

WHO'S GOT IT BETTER THAN US?

NOOOOOOOOBODYYYYYYYYY! :D

"Or maybe Rodgers is overrated?"

No. No he is not...45 TDs, MVP year, and a SB MVP last year...

No, he is not.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
02 Jan 12 UTC
haha obi they haven't yet invented numbers high enough to quantify Rodgers' awesomeness. I just loved the grinning "WTF" look he gave Flynn after TD #6. You'd have to be severely retarded to think he's overrated.
SacredDigits (102 D)
02 Jan 12 UTC
Well, the theory goes that if anyone could pop under center for Green Bay and get 6 TD's, that maybe Rodgers is benefiting a lot from everyone else on the team. And MVP awards are at least in part popularity contest, that's why it's almost always a QB that gets them.

But I still think Rodgers is pretty great.
I think Rodgers is better than average, but this performance by Flynn just goes to show that his success is partially due to the amazing weapons he has at his disposal. I'm not saying anyone could get those results, but I'd say most above-average quarterbacks could. Rodgers is overrated, imo, and the stats go to show he has good receivers moreso than anything else.

It's like me saying after tonight's performance that Eli Manning was amazing. No. Absolutely not. Victor Cruz is just insane, that's all, and Nicks is a great receiver as well. They did more of the work than Manning (actually, strike that, he was hopping around in the pocket dodging tackles like no other. I'll give him credit for that).
Also, I haven't watched enough Bengals games to know what Dalton is like, but he consistently went against 3 of the league's top defenses. Taking that into consideration, what he did with the Bengals is amazing, though his stats don't match up with Cam. And as much as I love watching Cam Newton play....there's something very Michael Vick about him, and I don't like that.
Putin33 (111 D)
02 Jan 12 UTC
Manning went to the playoffs with no running game for most of the year and a difficult schedule. Considering the off season & injuries the NYG had, Coughlin deserves Coach of the Year.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
02 Jan 12 UTC
I don't think so, SD and goldfinger.... you couldn't pop "just anybody" under Peyton Manning even though he has awesome weapons as well. He got hurt and his team fell apart. Same with when Brady got hurt. The GB performance yesterday was a testament to Flynn's awesomeness, not Rodger's surrounding cast.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
02 Jan 12 UTC
lol antisaint, is Putin always a buzzkill? Stick around, my friend. I'll let his nonsense speak for itself. Never have I seen such a smart fellow use his talents in such a ridiculous manner.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
02 Jan 12 UTC
1. Coughlin, Coach of the Year, for getting the NYG to 9-7 and just getting into the playoffs on the last day?

How about, I dunno...

JIM HARBAUGH--turned a 6-10 team that hadn't been to the playoffs in a decade into a 13-3 team and the #2 seed in the NFC...WHILE having most of the same players Singletary had the year before, so you can't chalk it up to new personnel on the field (hell, he did it with old gun Alex Smith, who'd been floundering under the previous two coaches, AND the "new personnel," Braylon Edwards, was hurt and released...hmmm...)

2. YES, Yellowjacket...Putin exists to be a buzzkill and to echo Groucho's old saying:

"WHATEVER IT IS, I'M AGAINST IT!"

Except, when Grouch said it...it was funny...and people actually cared.

3. I WILL, however, say, YJ, that while Rodgers is easily a Top 5 QB in the league, I do think Sunday shows that he's helped even more by the team...so yes, great QB--but he's not Elway on a team with no weapons guiding them, seemingly on his own, to Super Bowls, or Joe Montana, who won both with and without Jerry Rice, Roger Craig, John Taylor, and that 1980s 49ers offense dynasty.

So Rodgers is good...but he's not cracking any All-Time lists just yet...

After all, it's not like he's the greatest thing ever since cheese(heads), right? ;)
2ndWhiteLine (2596 D(B))
02 Jan 12 UTC
There's no way Coughlin is COTY. The worst thing he ever did for NY was to win the Super Bowl, which means we're stuck with him.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
02 Jan 12 UTC
"...but he's not cracking any All-Time lists just yet"

All-time stats are garbage. Favre set a bunch of them, and so did Marino. Excellent QBs both, but all those mean is you played for a long time. Still, I'm not gonna argue that Rodgers doesn't have a lot of help. Our whole organization is awesome and I pity fans of other franchises in general. You just can't understand unless you are here.

I personally, do not care if Rodgers is waaaay worse than people think (not that I believe that for a second). I care that we win games as a team - the rest is irrelevant.

The Patriots did just fine with Cassel over Brady, and any questions of whether Cassel was as elite or not were answered in Kansas City.
jmeyersd (4240 D)
02 Jan 12 UTC
This discussion makes me think of an interesting question: does anyone other than me think that people place FAR to much importance on stats in evaluating players' performances? A lot of the time I feel like fans and even pundits haven't actually watched players play but instead read a stat reel and go off the numbers. No one who has seen many Green Bay games would say Rodgers is maybe a top-5 qb. Similarly, i think Cam makes a lot of plays Dalton never would (and more mistakes too, to be fair).
SacredDigits (102 D)
02 Jan 12 UTC
As a sidenote to jmeyersd, I think in a lot of cases people put too little importance on Guys Without Stats. O-Line, for instance. Shanahan is infamous for sticking any random dude in at RB and him having a 100 yard game because he knows how to make schemes for his O-line that make a serviceable RB into a superstar. The Chiefs used to do this a lot too. Now, Green Bay has a lot of O-Line injuries this season, but they still have given their QB's a lot of time to throw. The Bengals have a great line too. Which is another place that I put Cam above Dalton...the Panthers have Cam, an aging Steve Smith, and...nothing else.

GB and NE get a lot of flak for having shitty defenses, but I like the Packers' ability to have enough going on defense to make the plays when they need to. Both teams are built to get into shootouts, but I think the Pack has an edge in defensively doing enough in them.

Actually, many of the playoff teams are designed that way. Saints, for instance.
