OK, This HAS To Stop! America...THIS Is Why Your Colleges Are Failing!
Or one reason...jerks like the ones who are 1. Talking in a library on finals 2. Clearly set this girl off and 3. ARE SO SLEAZY AS TO TAPE HER, AND THEN GOAD HER SOME MORE!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=xbaDw7A6anA
WHY let jerks like that who don't want to work into our Cal States U's? They're already impacted! I feel for that Asian girl...

"he girl had obviously been walking aound the room talking before the video start, how do you know how it started? Its obvious this filming started mid-rampage not before hand."

I agree--and clearly something set her off.

And as she went directly to those girls, I would surmise those girls were the source...she was walking around, probably trying to walk away, and, upon hearing more, either snapped, or decided to just speak up.

"What? scolding people?"

She was "scolding" them for clearly going to great lenghts to bother her and target here and doing all of this...again...in a library. Really, her "scolding" amounts to "I just want to study, please, just leave me alone!"

Is that so unfair an assertion? It's not like she got on them for sneezing...

"How the fuck do you know. It seems to me when they first say "shes coming over here" It is the first time she does so. It seems to me this girl had scolded another, or a few tables giving her that reputation. It would make the girls announcement at the end of the rampage that she hates the whole room make sense. Bottom line, you have no clue whether it was rational or who is to blame"

She was walking away from that area and THEN walked back as they said that...indicating she'd already spoken to them...

As for addressing the room--again, she seemed to have completely snapped by then, and I must reiterate, SOMEONE pushed her to that...she didn't snap by herself.

SOMEONE there is to blame for pushing her that far...

Note at the end how she shouts and says "Do you see me talking like this?!"

Want to bet they WERE talking like that, over and over, setting her off, leading me to...

"If she is scolding people who are breathing hard or whispering than she should."

They were NOT just "breathing hard," I think, given her later comments...

And it's a lot easier to buy someone getting THAT worked up over a louder and more disruptive act than mere whispering, especially, again, given her later comments.

"not to mention that you do not know the rules of that section of the library, library I was at had quiet study sections and normal study sections where whispering or low talking was accepted"

And by that same logic, YOU don't know if it was the section where absolute silence and study was mandated and NOT discussion.

If you're going to claim an argument like that, it goes both ways...
Obi this is ridiculous, you have no idea what the hell happened here. You don't know when this started, you don't know how it started, you don't know what the rules of the room are etc. You know nothing but continue to grandstand. I would have told the asian girl to stfu, no matter the volume of those girls the asian girl is obviously the biggest distraction, and it is also obvious the room is not on her side.

BS E.E. from Michigna State University. I **rarely** studied in the library. Couldn't stand how quiet it was. typically studied in my bedroom with music cranked up or NPR playing....coffee in the kitchen...or the occasional bong hit. Plus, by studying at home, I knew when everyone was planning on going to the bar...so I had motivation to focus on getting my studying done by bar time.

Libraries suck. Libraries are trite. Libraries are where people go who think that is where you are supposed to go.

Asian chick ha a right to be pissed....but seriously....get the fuck over it.

REALITY CHECK....in REAL LIFE, when you GO TO WORK, you don't have the option of being a bitch and demanding everybody be quiet. If you can't handle a little extraneous noise around you, you are going to have a long, sad working career....
"And by that same logic, YOU don't know if it was the section where absolute silence and study was mandated and NOT discussion."

Exactly and I am not passing judgement YOU are

Reality Check. It's a <*cough*>staged<*cough*> video.
I loved studying at the library, not the big rooms like those, but some abandoned corner of the library (and there always were some). It was exactly what I needed for my ADD sometimes. Other times though I just set up shop in my fraternity living room and was just fine as well. I found i needed very little noise and action, or alot of it.
krellin (80 DX)
10 Dec 11 UTC
Draug...staged or not, there are people here that buy in to the whole idea of the Library being some sort of freaking holy place. To them I say get a life. If you can't handle a little noise, you are going to have a rough life.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
10 Dec 11 UTC
@krellin:

I actually do the same studying-wise...with the exception of the bong hit. ;)

Hell, I just studied for one of my English finals at Buffal Wild Wings with friends, ESPN, and some REALLY SHITTY 90s music blaring... ;)

But even still, I'm just saying this...

The Asian Girl--or WOMAN, if you're so inclined, Yonni--isn't totally in the right, I concede...she DID overreact.

But the other party WAS, FROM WHAT WE CAN SEE--and thus all we can judge--MORE in the wrong...by simple virtue, if nothing else, of taping her (violation of privacy? I'D flip a bit too! That's just plain unethical, not to mention problematic legally and really just a dick move...)

@Draug:

And you think that because...?

Because this girl WANTED to be told to STFU by some on the Internet while the filmers wanted to be (rightly) blasted for being assholes?
krellin (80 DX)
10 Dec 11 UTC
@Santa...when I DID study at the library, I always went up to like the fifth floor and found a dark corner, too. so I agree. If you are in some huge room with 100 people and expect perfect silence you are just an asshole.

I oncehelped a guy write a paper -- music major -- addressing learning. Studies showed that when people learned to music, they tended to do better on tests if they could recall the music while testing.

I always teach my kids to study by reading, writing and saying....engaging all parts of the brain. Play music...whatever....The idea of creating a perfectly silent environment to study in possibly means worse results, unless you can guarantee that the test/real life environment in which the knowledge is used mimics the learning atmosphere.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
10 Dec 11 UTC
And I'm not saying the libray is a holy place...

And for the love of God--there or not--*I* love to talk in the library!

But if someone tells me to STFU, ESPECIALLY AT FINALS...

I will--I WON'T continue to badger them, and I ESPECIALLY won't videotape someone at their most vulnerable (am I the only one bothered by that aspect of all this?)
krellin (80 DX)
10 Dec 11 UTC
@obi -- the film party was definitely outside of "social norms" then again, a large percentage of the people on this web site TYPICALLY disdain "social norms".....so I am sensing a weeeee bit of hypocrisy from the sheep here...
Invictus (240 D)
10 Dec 11 UTC
Don't you ever get tired of being so outraged, obiwanobiwan?
Its very common in academia for writers to listen to music while they write, I cant do that though, not even classical. People have different optimal study environments. But its probably smart to get them used to it while young. There is an open classroom highschool by home and i always kind of wished I attended so I could build up tolerance to all sorts of craziness. You gotta be good at it when you are learning trig and the class across from you is teaching sex ed.

Oh, dude, obi, grow the fuck up. I have a co-worker and good friend who I go to lunch with everyday and we great eat other every morning with an insult including things like "Hi fuck-up!" "Hey asshole!". We constantly toss jabs across the cubicle wall like "Hey asswipe?" "What shit for brains?" "Try to do something useful today, OK?" "Only if you do..."

Shoudl they have pulled it in a crowded library? Not if it was actively in use. But for all we know, everyone was in on it and this is an excerpt from a project or some shit.
on topic again thhough, when i did go to the library in grad school and undergrad it was more with the mindset "OK time for work" and I saw the library as my office place separate from my home where i just wanted to shoot the shit with friends or play videogames or something. Id set a time for library time and just work my ass off for that amount of time. In grad school it becomes more important in case you want to pursue some footnotes.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)

@krellin:

...Unless you're insinuating that I advocate taping people in the middle of their most vulnerable moments...hypocrisy?

I'm not going to stand by someone just because they break "social norms"...

And especially not if they badger people who are just trying to do their work.

@Invictus:

Meh...I'm a pretty rage-filled person, I suppose...

Even *I* wouldn't be so vindictive as to tape someone like that, mind you, but still...oh, and I'm not crying over our killing terrorists, either, so I'm still ahead of jgredsox in that regard.

@Draug:

And my English friends and I badger each other as well in a similar fashion.

"Shoudl they have pulled it in a crowded library? Not if it was actively in use."

Hence my standpoint.

"But for all we know, everyone was in on it and this is an excerpt from a project or some shit."

"for all we know"=conjecture, plain and simple...and unless you have something to back it up, there is no reason to believe this isn't authentic.

I think Santa makes an important point: Wherever you do study, you must have a different mindset going in to it. In your head, there must be a clearly defined goal and time frame in which to accomplish it....just as in the business world. If you can not measure and judge the results of your activity, then your activity is probably not as effective as it should be.

I studied in my bedroom....but I lived in the basement of my house, isolated from the people I shared the house with...but when I studied, I knew it was "Calc for an hour and a half....get thourhg the problems, review the notes....then hour and a half for electro-magnetics, etc..." My goals were defined, and without self-imposed deadlines, I'd still be ignoring my homework from 20+ years ago! lol
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
10 Dec 11 UTC
1. I'll be honest...and maybe this is just the English-major-mentality vs. Math-mentality:

I NEVER go in with a pre-conceived idea of how long and what to study and all that...

I just go with whatever I'm thinking of or think might be on the test, and generally just talk with friends or listen to music while I read or whatever else.

I don't define my goals...I just don't...I just sort of go with it, and it works for me--

All A's in every class except one, in which A's were super-rare (I think out of 30 people 2 or 3 got them.)

2. Well...

If goals ARE that important...

Unless "talk and bother other folks trying to study the set-aside material they've set aside for this time and place" counts...

What right did they have to disturb her?

She was NOT acting in a vacuum, folks...SOMETHING sparks a reaction THAT big...
Draugnar (0 DX)

@obi - Unless you have something to back it up, there's no reason to believe it *is* authentic. It's Schroedinger's Cat, dude. Until we get more evidence either way, it is neither faked nor authentic.
Draugnar (0 DX)

All As, obi? Really? In whatever Math course or science/physics course you are taking as well? I have a simple phrase for you that will serve you well in life where the approach you take to academia will fail you... Those who fail to plan, plan to fail. Always, and I mean *always*, have a goal. Plan your efforts and you will find them more succesful and your time spent will be more effective and efficient.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
10 Dec 11 UTC
"Unless you have something to back it up, there's no reason to believe it *is* authentic."

Actually...we do:

The fact that this video is leading to NEGATIVE attention for these people, both the Asian girl and those behind the camera, who many are conjecturing to be Black.

Do you REALLY think they went into this thinking "Let's get this Asian girl totally laughed at and told she's a wreck and have this video over her head for all future job reviews and interviews, AND let's, for a kicker, be sure to try and incite some racially-charged dialogue"--a sampling of which from YouTube has already been posted--"and go for the DOUBLE-hatred sandwich!"

Really?
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
10 Dec 11 UTC
"All As, obi?"

All A's in ENGLISH...in case I didn't make that clear, I thought I had, if not, I apologize.

(Though in the science courses I took...yes, I received a B in both Biology and Physical Geography...not A's, but for an English major, not bad...especially as Bio was a 16-weeks-of-material-into-4 Intersession course over the summer)

You are confusing results with motives. Results don't necessarily reflect the actual motives. They may have gotten something entirely unexpected by them. They are idiot college kids anyhow. If they were stupid enough to do this as a staged thing, then they were stupid enough to not realize what the end result would be.

I think Yonni's point is actually a serious one - that has been glibly dismissed in this thread.

The woman in the pink sweater looks between 25-30 years old yet you still define her as a 'girl'. Talking about women (who are obviously mature enough to be classed as women) as girls is demeaning. No one would call a 25-30 year old looking male as a 'boy'. If this video were about a black male no one would be describing him as 'that black boy'. Although it's common and accepted colloquialism to reduce women to the status of 'girls', we shouldn't accept it.

At the one hand you want to protect her right to a quiet - nay, silent - library but then you reduce her to being an 'Asian' and a 'girl'. Although I appreciate her Asian ethnicity is a key defining feature with which to describe her - reducing her to these labels in this conversation is perhaps unhelpful - especially when you contrast it to the 'black girls' who are taking the video. It can quickly boil down to a race issue - which I see it already has on the video's youtube page. Furthermore, because of this 'girl' label that this woman has been given - the direction of this thread has gone in the direction of helping her and her poor situation. It's slightly patronising - she can clearly take care of herself, if a little heavy-handedly. If it was a male in the video, the conversation would have been slightly more academic.
