Don't get that conversation started here if you don't have any knowledge of Québec's history. And your question certainly attests to that ignorance.
French people in Québec were "slaves" in other ways, trust me. Or don't! You can take a quick look at a movie like "The Rocket: The Legend of Rocket Richard" to get a glimpse of it if you want. It's a good movie and it's not about teaching so much as depicting. So it's both entertaining and instructive.
My dad used to work on boats, on the Great Lakes, back in the 60s. He told me of his visit to one of Detroit's most infamous areas, around the port, where a black man threatened him to get his money and shit. My dad, in a terrible accent, said he had nothing. The guy, hearing the accent, said something like: You're obviously not from here, but you should know better than to play wise ass with me. My dad told him he was French, from Montreal. To which the guy replied: Oh! So you're the white nigger of America. And I ain't about to rob a poor nigger!
And he left.
