To Mute or To Unmute Dip33, that is the question!
Yes, this is yet another poll surrounding the Dip33 phenomenon. I've had him muted for a while now, but it looks as though I might be missing out. Should I keep him muted or unmute the kid? Let me know in this latest "+1 Webdip Poll"

Define productive... Sex is all about reproducing and procreating, both share a common source with the word productive.

lol Thanks, smartass

All I'm saying is, there are currently 2 threads devoted to harassing a child, who clearly loves getting negative attention. Seems like the adults of this community should have better things to do with their time : )

@ Abge:

You're right. Not the most constructive thread. Having said that, Dip33 knows I have him muted and he's tested it many times with PMs. I don't think I've offended him much today.
Meanwhile, I do take issue with the racist slur, even if it comes from a kid. And pleading ignorance (if I'm right in assuming that this is what he did) doesn't cut it for me. I'm not deeply offended (I'm a redhead, I've been called names all my life, so I've learned to not care much about this sort of shit), but some could be. I'm not the only one from Québec on this site.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

The sole purpose of this thread was to antagonize another member into making a scene. You'll get no sympathy from me if you feel he went too far.
Cachimbo (1181 D)
21 Nov 11 UTC
Hmmm....

I think I can grant you my mistakes and yet resist the implication that my being at fault in one specific way opens the floor to any form of verbal retaliation. That's not to say that you should extend me your sympathy, which I was never striving for. I merely want to point out that calling someone an idiot or a "Dipshit33" is not sufficient grounds for racial slurs.

Had I given indications that I was dark skinned, would it have been okay for him to call me a "nigger" because I was teasing him in the ways I did?

Antagonism is one thing, racism another. I'm not so much looking for justice as I am trying to raise awareness: I think it needs to be pointed out, on this self-regulated forum, that there are limits to teasing/trolling/insulting/etc.

For fuck sake Abge: we've recently had a debate on the paternalistic implications of using the word "girl" to denote a woman. And you're gonna tell me that EXPLICIT racist slurs are fine by you as just one other example of a burn that is tolerable on our pages?

I will readily mock people who deserve it, more in jest than anything, but you will never hear me demean someone because of how they look or where they're from. Common sense... just plain old common sense.

I forget, when was the last time the French were enslaved for over 100 years because of the color of their skin?
Cachimbo (1181 D)
21 Nov 11 UTC
Dear sir....

Don't get that conversation started here if you don't have any knowledge of Québec's history. And your question certainly attests to that ignorance.

French people in Québec were "slaves" in other ways, trust me. Or don't! You can take a quick look at a movie like "The Rocket: The Legend of Rocket Richard" to get a glimpse of it if you want. It's a good movie and it's not about teaching so much as depicting. So it's both entertaining and instructive.

My dad used to work on boats, on the Great Lakes, back in the 60s. He told me of his visit to one of Detroit's most infamous areas, around the port, where a black man threatened him to get his money and shit. My dad, in a terrible accent, said he had nothing. The guy, hearing the accent, said something like: You're obviously not from here, but you should know better than to play wise ass with me. My dad told him he was French, from Montreal. To which the guy replied: Oh! So you're the white nigger of America. And I ain't about to rob a poor nigger!

And he left.

That man seemed to know more than you do Abge.
Yonni (136 D(S))

Abg, regardless of the peoples' history you don't really have a right to question whether or not a racial slur is offensive to someone.

That being said, I really didn't think 'frog' had such weight as a racial slur these days but I guess I was mistaken. Do the Quebecois take similar offence to being called Pepsis?

p.s. Abg, you are correct though that the premise of this thread is rather pitiful.
Yonni (136 D(S))
21 Nov 11 UTC
Telling an American to learn about Quebecois history by suggesting he watches a movie on Rocket Richard. Cliché much?
Cachimbo (1181 D)
21 Nov 11 UTC
But hey! I just thought of something...

Spec, girl, gino, etc.... There are tons of racist slurs that are directed at groups of people on the mere basis of them being different.

Faggot! Were gays slaves?

If not, by your logic, using derogatory terms like "faggot" is A-okay!
Diplomat33 (243 D(B))
21 Nov 11 UTC
You know what, I have decided to mute this thread. It is going nowhere but down. Sorry if I offended you Cachimbo. Goodbye to all. See you in other threads.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
21 Nov 11 UTC
Well, if that's the case, then I apologize. I don't pretend to know of every injustice that has ever happened in this world.

But, I find it a bit ridiculous that you find it OK to repeatably bully a kid and then are surprised when he results to offensive language himself. You are the adult; you should act like it. When you don't, don't be surprised when the kids that use you as a role model start acting like little shits.

Diplomat you can be an ass and still be generally well received (take me for example gwahaha), but you gotta be a clever ass, not an obnoxious one. Just up your game a bit and you'll do fine.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
21 Nov 11 UTC
"Abg, regardless of the peoples' history you don't really have a right to question whether or not a racial slur is offensive to someone."

I agree. But, if someone is bullying a kid to the point where he uses a racial slur, whose fault is it really?
Cachimbo (1181 D)
21 Nov 11 UTC
Do not mistake a premise with an illustration.

Frog doesn't nearly have the effect Nigger does.

As for Pepsi and frogs, much like the culture of the last few years that has recycled "nigger" in their music and such so that they could appropriate the word, Québec culture has done the same.

"I'm a frog, you're a frog, kiss me/ and I'll turn into a prince, suddenly/ donne-moi des peanuts/ m'en va t'chanter allouette sans fausses notes"
Lyrics from a very popular québecois song from the 70s

Pepsi was used by humourist Claude Meunier in a wonderful add series for .... Diet Pepsi.

But again: used by the people it served to insult, it doesn't mean the same thing
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
21 Nov 11 UTC
"Frog doesn't nearly have the effect Nigger does."

That is the only point I was trying to make with my enslavement comment.

I'm not saying racial slurs are OK, I'm just saying don't be surprised if it gets to that point if you keep giving someone a hard time.
Cachimbo (1181 D)
21 Nov 11 UTC
As for the movie suggestion:

My wife is from Calgary. A pure anglo-Canadian. And even she had no idea. After watching that movie, she came to have much more understanding for Québec's plight. I think it's mostly due to the fact that the film depicts part of our history and does not preach about it. It makes it accessible and... less antagonistic!
