Is Playing Diplomacy a "Right?"
How many teenagers and twenty-somethings fritter away their days playing diplomacy instead of making sure they get an education or aren't a burden on society?

Why is America in so much debt?
The size of America's debt is staggering and it is really hard to imagine it ever being paid off and the long term negative consequences are very worrying. How did a country run by smart people allow itself to get into this awful predicament?

variant idea
Has this been tried before?

So I'm thinking of attempting to design some kind of randomly generated map to stir things up and avoid the same old alliances and same old outcomes. Would the community be interested in something like this? Would the powers that be support it if I was able to develop a good one?

Why is the colonial variant disabled?
I noticed that there are four other variants that are on the server yet are disabled. What is the purpose of this? Wouldn't more variants mean more gameplay for the members here? I know I'm new here so if there was a good reason before I left, I'm interested in hearing about it.

Sort of a Goodbye
School will be starting soon, so I'll have trouble keeping up with all of my games. I will definitely be taking a break, so you might not see me again until December. By then, I'm sure I'll have several new people to argue with in the forums and quite a few of you will have forgotten about me. But that's great! Wouldn't it be nice to have some worshippers on WebDiplomacy? That way I'd win every game!

I never understand why people would ever want to have one-night stands/casual hookups. If you're attracted to someone enough to fuck them, why wouldn't you want to date them? I mean, I'm sure sex is fun, but wouldn't a relationship+sex be even more fun?

Had some time to explore Portland, OR today. It was really nice. Clean, not congested, I never had to wait to cross the street. Overall, a much "happier" city than Boston. Oh, and a cute chick was dancing around flashing people, so no complaints there.

England's Riots
Does anyone oever there--or over here, for that matter--know what's going on, ie, why these folks are rioting?

All I get in searching for it are notifications about England's...cricket team...? And a friendly? Is that it, is this all one big "soccer riot," so to speak, or has Yahoo's serach engine failed once again, and there are real, important reasons behind all this?

@krellin: How exactly am I bragging about anything?
krellin (80 DX)
16 Aug 11 UTC
CM....would you like me to list my pedigree for you, including my honor's college courses that I 4.0'ed? Someone asked you what grade you were in....and you proceeded to put forth some ridiculous list of class titles which, under pressure, you were forced to admit were essentially the same classes that any high school kid would take, but were just fancied up with pretty names. Oh...but you do experiments....as I did in my lowly public high school. You are at the space and engineering "academy"....meaning you focus on math and science to the absence of poly sci and psychology and philosophy.

You listed things off in detail in order to impress us. Those of us that have met people like you in the work place....and found you to be no different in skill set....but more annoying in attitude....than others, are distinctly unimpressed by your braggadocio.
krellin (80 DX)
16 Aug 11 UTC
I tell you this to knock you down a notch....because you have not earned the right to brag about anything yet, my dear 10th grader. When you've had your first kiss, your first job, your first individual thought that wasn't placed into your consciousness by a teacher, let us know. Until then, you are a kid repeating the things stuffed into your skull by overpaid educators.
krellin (80 DX)

Hell....even your chosen name, Conservative "Man" is a misnomer. You are not a man....yet you put yourself out there as if you have the experience of an adult. Do you not see something contradictory about that? Sure...you can have your opinions....but there is a reason children don't rule the world. I'm just saying...
@krellin: Oh, your trolling is hilarious and stupid at the same time. Anyway,
"CM....would you like me to list my pedigree for you, including my honor's college courses that I 4.0'ed?" How exactly does your pedigree matter to this discussion? Woo hoo, you got aced honors college classes. I might when I'm in college too. I don't know. But at the end of the day, you won't be remembered for what classes you got an A in. You'll be remembered for doing something great with your life. Now, neither of us have done anything particularly great, and only time will tell if either of us do.

"you were forced to admit were essentially the same classes that any high school kid would take, but were just fancied up with pretty names." They ARE advanced classes. Most high school kids would take easier classes. All I said was that they aren't super special (as in, they aren't classes for geniuses or anything).

"meaning you focus on math and science to the absence of poly sci and psychology and philosophy."
My school doesn't offre poly sci or philosophy, and I'm planning on taking psychology when I'm a senior.

"because you have not earned the right to brag about anything yet," again, how exactly have I bragged about anything?

"Hell....even your chosen name, Conservative "Man" is a misnomer. You are not a man....yet you put yourself out there as if you have the experience of an adult."
I chose that name because I was 13 when I joined this site, and I didn't want anyone to know I was 13.

@krellin

Why are you being such a dick. CM wasn't bragging; he was just sharing something with us and some of us were interested.

I agree that calling a bio class engin 2 makes no sense, but other than that, I couldn't figure out what your problem was.

What's wrong with having a freshmen engineering class? I had one. It was fun. We made a speaker and an electromagnetic motor and some other stuff. Does taking a HS chemistry course make you a Chemist? No. So, what's you're problem with engineering classes?

The only person who's been acting like a brat is you (and atom, of course). Seriously. Chill the fuck out.

"Dual-Enrollment Math Analysis (A highly advanced pre-calculus)"

Math-Anal (at least at my school) is a step below pre-calc.
You are certainly the genius you claim to be with such a difficult schedule...

@EmperorMaximus, they're actually not any more work, my AP classes last year were as easy, if not easier, than my other classes. You'll definitely learn a lot, but they're only hard if the teacher is a dick.
emfries (0 DX)
16 Aug 11 UTC
Umm check this schedule:

Honors calc 3
Principles of chemical structure (advanced)
Principles of chemical structure lab (advanced)
Mathematical microeconomics
Intro to astrophysics / software development methods (wait listed)

I think I win...
@Cm those are some pretty cool classes. I didn't have any of that fancy stuff in my high school. Also, I find it odd that I took the most advanced route in my high school, and took most of my classes a year after you all....which makes me hate the New York Public Schools System. Would I have liked to take pre-calc in 10th grade, of course. But I had to take it in 11th. In retrospect though, it helped me get 5s on all 6 of the AP's I took, because I was competing against ppl a grade below me lol.

Seriously, AP's are no big deal. Be conscious in class and you'll pass them, no matter how good or bad your teacher is. I did probably half of my AP Econ test as educated guesses (because my teacher didn't do shit) and still got a 5. Don't worry about knowing everything, just worry about knowing more than everyone else lol.

@KA - 4th chair means nothing if your band is crap. (selfish egotistical moment coming) My band was one of the top 10 in New York State and I was 2nd chair junior year, 1st chair senior year (in the best of the 3 bands my school had). (end self-promoting moment)
ghug (5068 D(B))
16 Aug 11 UTC
You're in college though, of course you have better classes.
And since everyone is posting my schedule, I'll do mine. Sophomore in college, taking an easy semester :)

Managerial Accounting (ACCT 241)
Honors Intermediate Microeconomics (ECON 300)
Introduction to Information Technology (ITEC 204.....i normally wouldn't take this but its a requirement for my dual degree)
Modern Art (ARHT 214)
Global Corporate Citizenship (BUS 240 basically a business ethics/law class)

largeham (149 D)

The only interesting thing I found about my accounting unit was the finance bits stuck on the end. I'm guessing some parts of accounting could be interesting (forensic accounting does look good), but the basics bore me.

Nah, school was okay. Sure, most teenagers can be assholes and most subjects are useless/boring, but overall I found it alright.
I come from..yeah..a town of 60 pop. My high school had 100 people. I didn't have the opportunity to be taught AP, Honors, or any rigorous college-prep classes. I was even turned down from taking College Calc my Senior year because I was the only one who signed up. Now that's not fair.

zultar (4180 DMod(P))

There are more people in your high school than in your town...
And see, no college needed, you still play Diplomacy just fine, and all these geniuses can't even get a win.
I'm sure there's more to being good at Diplomacy than being a genius. But it's not IQ deficient person's game.
@CM

Good luck (you really don't need it) as a sophomore.

I hadn't realized just how many high school kids were playing this game. I'm so glad to be out of that rat race! AND the college one too. Well, technically out of it. I'm going back now for a masters in software engineering (video games are my specialty) but at least I don't have to live that crazy lifestyle anymore. I'm happily married for 11 years now with two boys of my own who are learning how to play this game as well.

@KA Thanks for the warning and advice... but you'll find with age that the beauty of being a middle-aged adult is that you don't have to give a flying whatsit to what other people truly think. I'll chime in on an interesting (or maybe not so) topic but if someone else doesn't care about it... that's their problem, not mine.

FirstApple, welcome to the community. It is good to see some adults join as well. Don't listen to King Atom. He is an idiot.
He talks a lot but does not accomplish all that much. He's in high school and thinks he knows the world already and that we all should endeavor to get to know him because of how awesome he truly is. Just mute him and your life will be much easier.
Anyhow, welcome again and if you want introduction to play with some of the better players on the site, let me know.
