What games involve skills vital to diplomacy.
If one was to hone one's diplo skills by playing other games, what would those games be?

Probably the only thing we'll ever agree on.

@Putin

Panzer Blitz is a seriously broken game...

@abge - I like Panzer Blitz and Panzer General both. Also, there is a little known game for the PC (back in the Windows 286/3.0/3.1 days) called TacOps which was a player vs. computer orders resolved simultaneaously game that helps with unit placement and movement limitation while trying to guess your opponents moves. It alos had a modem interface IIRC so you could play against friends. It was mission based in that one player defended while the other attacked and the goals were tol "hold off the enemy for X turns" or "capture the enemy's flag and return it to base in X turns". But, like the Pnazer series and the 5-star General series (check them out too), there were a lot more unit types than just fleet and army.

And which Panzer Blitz? PC or boardgame from Avalon Hill?
Draugnar (0 DX)

And I agree with Putin as well. S. Ossetia should be recognized and respected as it's own, independent country.

i don't get it really...

What post against abgemacht? I just commented that I happen to like Panzer Blitz and was wondering if he meant the boardgame was broken or the PC version of the game.

Then I contibuted a few more games that would help build strategic and tactical skills.

I have the Avalon Hill board game version Panzer Blitz.

Steephie, there is a free downloadable version of Race for the Galaxy (with all the expansions) and also you can play Settlers of Cataan online. You can play a number of different war games at wargameroom.com. I think there's also a San Juan online (which is a card version of Puerto Rico).

Oh and I almost forgot about Brettspielwelt. They have tons of stuff and it's free.

@Putin - I assume you are from Russia at some point in your life. I so love to read your perspectives on all things involving Russia and the former Soviet Union. You have a unique perspective that I find refreshing, even if I don't always agree with it. I have a Russian friend (a Moscovite) whose wife is Ukranian and he is always teaching me a little of the language here and there and keeps me up on the Russian perspective of world affairs. It really does balance a community like this to have the perspectives from all around the world of the events that do now or one day may affect our lives.

We need to setup a parallel set of boards and play PB some time via email.

Understood. It just pointed out some good games for strategy and tactics.

TacOps
The Five Star General series of PC games (Panzer General and it's sequels along with Allied General, Pacific General, and People's General).

These are all older games for old Windows/DOS OS versions but should still run under XP/Vista/Windows 7.

I'm not Russian, just a Slavophile and a Marxist. I'm actually American. I've studied Serbian for a while and can read Russian and Macedonian at an intermediate level. I've visited Serbia but not Russia.

The Georgian invasion of South Ossetia and the leveling of Tskhinvali by the Georgians was a great crime and was/is completely ignored by the western media in the propaganda offensive of 2008. It's absolutely ridiculous. Imagine if Serbia had leveled Prishtina or Israel had leveled Ramallah. The west would be foaming at the mouth.

I'm talking about the board game from Avalon Hill.

eh, I don't know. I've tried playing it three times. I chose a group of friends who are pretty serious about board games, but it just didn't seem like a goo game. I feel like there are serious problems with the terrain/line of sight that significantly over/underpowers units artificially. Also, we had a problem with Germans being able to travel over more debris than Russians. That gave Germany a serious advantage in some parts of the map.

If Israel leveled Ramallah, the West would still just blindly ignore it I'm afraid. For some reason, the West (aprticularly the US) is blind to Israel's aggressions and backs them blindly instead of reminding them that they are one of many nations and need to learnt o get along with their neighbors instead of calling for peace while demanding absolute obsequiousness.

How about good old Age of Empires?

i have seen Age of Empires III by a friend, and i like the game Empire Earth II more...
online of course :)
I love Empire Earth. There's another game that I play a bit that deals mostly with tactics - not any diplomacy really - butt its Rise and Fall:Civilizations at War. I really liked it

you don't like it anymore??
Well, I kinda lost the play disc a while back and haven't found a replacement yet haha
steephie22 (182 D(S))
03 Jan 11 UTC
yeah...
KINDA lost the play disc??
sorry, i was bored and now i'm interested in something :)
Yeah, it pissed me off, because that was my favorite game. I usually just leave the disc in the computer (because I'm going to play it again when I get back) and when I game back there was one of my dad's tax program CD's or something in there(I forget what exactly it was), and he couldn't remember where he put it :( Needless to say, I don't keep the discs in computer anymore.

The EU sends hundreds of millions in aid to the PA every year. And it seems that every time somebody sneezes in the Levant, it makes world headlines. Whereas for example Sri Lanka annihilated the Tamilese and interned them in huge camps, and nobody said a word.

The US, despite being an 'ally', likes to twist Israel's arm to impose a settlement that is suicidal. What happened after the US-imposed Oslo agreement? Waves of suicide bombings. Only when Israel stands strong does the terrorism stop.

well, i don't know how your dad is but i think i could get my dad so far to give me the money it costed me and maybe i could get a better game (an extension or expansion, don't know wich one, i'm not english :)) instead of it...
but if the problem is in not finding the game somewhere in a shop...
of course you looked already but i have to say it: is it in 1 of the boxes (again i know i don't use the right word) of another game??
i had it 1 time with need for speed and my dad putted (again not right word... if anyone wants to i'm not angry when you corrects me...) it in the box from need for speed on the playstation, that 1 was still in the playstation :)
Draugnar (0 DX)

"Only when Israel stands strong does the terrorism stop."

But the thing is, it *doesn't* stop. Most of the time it just pisses off their enemies even more so that when they get the opportunity they strike harder than before. Peace cannot be forced and Israel is a bully who insists it's their way or the highway. And they do this knowing the US won't do anything real to stop them.

"What happened after the US-imposed Oslo agreement? Waves of suicide bombings."

Actually, in the years immediately after Oslo Israel enjoyed the greatest peace and security it has ever known. Even Netanyahu said so when he was PM circa 1998 or so. There were ZERO suicide bombings in 1999. It was only when the Palestinians realized that Oslo was a sham designed to lull them into a false sense of security while the Israelis built all those Jewish-only settlements and bypass roads throughout the occupied territories that things started to get ugly.

on South Ossetia/Abkhazia...

Whether they deserve their independence is an open question to me, but there is cause to support them.

However that doesn't excuse what Russia did in the war (nor does Russian misconduct excuse Georgia's conduct).

However I should also like to say that Russia has been.... a bit... overly supportive, even egging on the independence movement of the areas. They did not necessarily always want independence, just better representation/autonomy within Georgia itself.

Anywayzzz

What webDiplomacy really needs...
I very much miss multilateral negotiations here. Next to global broadcasts and bilateral correspondence, there ought to be the option to adress several (but not all) players at once. It's a very basic and very necessary feature that all Diplomacy judges have. webDiplomacy really needs to up its game on that one.

As some of you recall, I released a series of stats last year, as an unofficial player of the year award, using the data I get for Ghost-Rating.

Here is the 2010 version. (If someone formats it with links by each player's name I would be really grateful)

This Time On Philosophy Weekly: Picard And Sisko Argue Ethics--Ends vs. Means!
We started to have a debate about this in the last topical post, so I thought I'd give it the full attention it deserves, since it IS one of greatest dilemmas in all of ethical thought and conduct. And, luckily enough we have two GREAT advocates for the opposing positions: Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Captain Benjamin Sisko! ;) So, as a fun end of the year discussion, if ends DO justify the means, to what extent, and if they DON'T...then what IS justifiable?
