Thanks guys! I appreciate that. Considering I'd never hear of this game before and joined 12 games before I knew even what moves were possible I'm pretty happy with that. Plus I just won my second game yesterday so I guess I'm higher now. My 1st 10 games didn't go so well but the last 10 have seen definite improvements except for 1 maybe 2.

Bearnstein plays a lot of noob games for 20 or less. His win/Loss record is incredible but he plays us noobs.

One thing I am a little confused about in the all time ranking is the difference between all-time rank and the current rank.
The lowest ranked player, all time, is ranked 4,155, but the lowest ranked player, current rank (December 1, I presume) is ranked 11,125. After a certain point the current ranking jump several places at a time (sometimes hundreds).

Btw I am referring to December 2000 all time.

For what I have seen, the best way to increase your rating lately is play a lot of live games with noobs. If you stay to the end you got at least a draw. Don´t really know if that kind of game should count on ghost rating anyway, and also the same could be said to gunboats.

You might have a point there. You can rack up a lot wins in a very short space of time with live games (at least that is my impression). I guess, of course, you can rack up a lot of losses too.

Lost 2 or 3, and I fall 500 places. Grrr.
No more live games for me until I can get myself together. >.>

I love live games, as long as everyone shows up, otherwise they can get boring quickly. I won my last two live games though so I am prejudiced...

I agree with Le Roi. I was at 143 in Oct, played too many live games where I lost or drew with newbies due to technical reasons, and dropped to 294 in Nov. Now I've been trying to be more selective about live games, athough they are so tempting sometimes. Got my rating back to 226 in Dec. Still have a ways to go.

With 5 or even 10 minute phases you have to admit that you don't get a real good strategic dialogue going with your allies. On the other hand, in the FTF tourney, you only get 12-15 minutes in each turn anyway. So for me there is a trade-off between the thrill of a live game versus the thoughtfulness and strategic alliances in the longer games, plus a better outcome in terms of my rating.

Not to much room for failure for me so as long as i don't get defeated and draw or survive or maybe win I will improve

I don't like the common four-way draws in live games, that's true, unless it's with talented players, but that's not usually the case.

I would be interested in playing a live game sometime, but I am a little put off by the idea of the 5 minute games. I don't think that is real diplomacy (although I can see it could be fun). I think 15 minutes is needed to at least get some diploming happening.
