Question about Draws...
If you're playing a points-per-SC game and you draw, do you split the pot evenly regardless of how many SCs you control? Or do you get points proportionate to how many SCs you have?

Newbie Support question
In this game http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=4401 I had a fleet in MAO supported by Western Med but it was dislodged by NAO supported by Irish Sea. I would've thought NAO would've bounced as it's 2 on 2. Is it because MAO had a failed move? I thought that didn't matter for defence.

Does anyone else think that points committed into games should feature in the ranking system? Under the current system someone that plays alot of games at once will seem to be lower ranked then someone taking a break even if they are of similar ability.

I found 'abhor' on the first page of my classmate's SAT 'verbal' 'workbook'. Try google 'define: abhor' and you see that even the glorified high school Princeton has it in its database..

Abhor, yes, abhorrent, yes. I still have never heard the original example of 'abhorred'.

Rowt is a local thing. Most Americans say root, not rowt. Kind of like Ant and Ahhhhnt. The majority say Ant, but you still hear ahhhhhnt depending on what part of the country you are in.

As an aside, I've never once heard any Canadian pronounce it "aboot" (and I'm Canadian.) - I think it's confined to a small population of Newfoundlanders on the east coast, which nobody can understand a word of anyway.

I really dislike when journalists use the words 'ink' or 'slate' as verbs in headlines.

i.e. "Government officials ink plan, slating parade for Thursday"
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
08 Jul 08 UTC
Ink is a verb though, meaning "to make wet or mark with ink"

If you ever by a quality fountain pen, you would have it expressed as "un-inked", for example.

Oh DeliciousWolf, must we always blame the newfies? Face it, it's not that Canadians say aboot, it's that Americans say abowwwt. =)

Charlize Theron is a bitch of a name to pronounce. Apparently Theron is supposed to be pronounced Tronn, but she prefers Thrown... I prefer the more frenchy pronunciation because of the accent on the e, and I hate the blunt American Thairon.

Deceptively is another stupid word, because as an adverb it doesn't serve any meaning, or at least a very ambiguous one... "The ice cream looked deceptively cold." What the hell would that imply? That it looked colder than it was? Or not as cold as it was? Bah!

You don't say looked though: "The Ice Cream was deceptively cold" clearly means it was colder than anticipated.

"mission creep" is pretty crap .
its such a farce. we cant do what we really want to do so therefor lets do something that while on the outside seems acceptable but will in fact lead to a situation that will make our original aim more plausible.

oh and plausible deniability sucks eggs too.

Chrispminis (916 D)

TheGhostmaker, I don't think it clearly means that it was colder than anticipated. It could very well mean that it was less cold than you anticipated and it seemed colder than it was. Perhaps some people have an exact idea of what deceptively means but it is not agreed upon. A quick google of 'deceptively' reveals this tidbit from the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language.

"When deceptively is used to modify an adjective, the meaning is often unclear. Does the sentence The pool is deceptively shallow mean that the pool is shallower or deeper than it appears? When the Usage Panel was asked to decide, 50 percent thought the pool shallower than it appears, 32 percent thought it deeper than it appears, and 18 percent said it was impossible to judge. Thus a warning notice worded in such a way would be misinterpreted by many of the people who read it, and others would be uncertain as to which sense was intended. Where the context does not make the meaning of deceptively clear, the sentence should be rewritten, as in The pool is shallower than it looks or The pool is shallow, despite its appearance."
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
09 Jul 08 UTC
I am in the 50% The Pool is shallow. It deceives you however, which means that it must seem deep, not shallow.
Iidhaegn (111 D)
09 Jul 08 UTC
I had no idea there was another way (besides TheGhostmaker's example) to read a sentence with the word deceptively in it.

"nuclear" when frequently mispronounced as "new-queue-lur"
"bro", especially now that my sister uses it in reference to me.
"phi" when pronounced "fye" (analogous complaints for psi and others)

I absolutely must agree with Gobbledygook on his complaint about "green". People think they are being environmentally friendly because they can call themselves "green" for some lame reason. My city (Seattle) just passed legislation approving a "green fee" of twenty cents for every disposable paper or plastic bag issued by a grocer or retailer. Never mind that what we're putting INTO those bags is clothing made in China, computer parts assembled in Japan from materials mined in Madagascar, or apples flown in from New Zealand.

Or what about calling yourself "green" for driving a car with greater fuel efficiency? It's like justifying your support for one Presidential candidate by pointing out the shortcomings of another: being less problematic than the main alternative is not the same thing as having merits of your own.

And people saying "they" won when it was their sport team that did all the work. They don't know how hard it is to constantly perservere in the field or the court, booing their own team when they lose and cheering for them when they win.
Chrispminis (916 D)
09 Jul 08 UTC
Yeah, but perhaps it's deceiving you into thinking it's shallow, when it's actually deeper. I think a lot (32%?) of people think of deceptively as a negative word, so the pool is not shallow.

Personally, I'm in the 18%. =D

There are other words too, like legal and deceptively, that i hate because they are so vague in their definition and use. For legal, my problem is that everyone can agree that certain core things are 'legal' but its incredibly difficult to define when something is not legal because the law effects everything. A definition can be made but it is simply a relative comparison and that seems to disagree with its intended use as a precise term.

by far my biggest issue is with reasonable though. I hate it. It seems to convey meaning at first glance, but then you try to define it and you realize it is completely meaningless because it is impossible to define something that is unreasonable. I still use the word reluctantly because it has meaning to other people who havent tried to define it and think they can somehow conceive of an unreasonable action. Its only real use is to degrade someone by suggesting they are completely devoid of cognitive capacity.
flashman (2274 D(G))

I assume you are impressed with the legal system then that uses the concept of 'beyond reasonable doubt' to convict people... : )
Null. I don't know why but it bothers me.

I was wondering why people tend to like certain countries over others. From what few games i have played, i have liked Germany and France the best, but it might just be due to circumstance.

How is the pot split when the game ends?
Let's say that when the game ends, the board looks like this:

Austria has 18
Italy has 12
England has 5
France, Germany, Russia and Turkey are all dead.

If the pot is 100, who gets how much? What's the formula? I can't seem to find it anywhere.

Basically, I guess my biggest questions are:
a) As the winner, do you always get a fixed percentage, or do you get more if more players are fully dead?
b) As a survivor, do you get a bigger percentage if you have more SCs, or do all survivors get the same amount?

Support
If a supporting unit, that is also supported by a third unit, is being attack by only one unit.
Does this attack cuts the support?
Example , Belgium supports Holland.
Picardy supports Belgium.
Rurh attacks Belgium without any support.
Kiel attacks Holland with the support from North Sea.
Is the Belgian support to Holland cut? Does Holland falls?
Thanks.

Do these 2 situations come out the same output ?
A French army and an Italian army try to move in the same unoccupied country with no support whatsoever: They both bounce back

But If the army of France was convoyed by a fleet would it be the same output ?
(2 French builds against 1 Italian build)

Thanks !

Newb question: When does a country enter Civil Disorder (CD)?
We've got a situation in Metternich6 where both Italy and Austria appear to have made no moves, and are uncommunicative (of course, this could also be some sort of ruse)- I assume not entering any orders for some period causes the country to fall into disorder and allows another player to take over. When does this occur? If CD does occur, can the original player come back and keep playing? Where a player abandons his game and the game goes CD, is there a penalty (especially if that player has less than 100 points)? Lots of questions, thanks for any insights!
