No one is hating on insurance companies, just that we aren't crying over the fact that they make big payments as their business model would require. I have sympathy for actual human beings. Legal fictions, not so much.

What I hope you learn is that you can't make blanket statements over entire states. Entire states are not homogeneous groups. I think your problem is you can't separate categories in groups, and everything has to be absolutely homogeneous in them. It's a very dangerous state of mind and I hope you overcome it.

I stayed "out of this thread" because I thought it was a provocative thread from the start. I want to make one comment. Kansas Boyd complains about attacks on groups or individuals. I think characterising the victims of these bushfires as " rich and stupid" right at the start of the thread is an innacurate slur. And that is an attack on a group of people.
I enjoy a "robust discussion", so I am wary of having a rule that disallows any harsh criticisms. I don't want to allow deliberately offensive comments, so there has to be, imho, a balance between allowing " robust discussions " and not tolerating the "offensive".

Perhaps the statement that the victims of the bushfires are "rich and stupid" is supposed to be so ironic or whatever that it's immediately seen as untruthful. But I thought it was an innacurate slur, and not at all helpful.

There have been a number of fatalities, so I suggest that this topic is unsuitable for use as a vehicle for other, political agendas, etc. Surely the compassionate thing to do is to put political differences aside, and offer help and support, empathy and compassion to all the victims of the bushfires, regardless of their race, religion, politics or socio~economic standing.

I think it was meant to be showing how stupid Ogion's viewpoint is, (that the south deserves all this destruction from the hurricanes.) I don't think it's actually his belief.

@MajorMitchell. That was a description giving to the victims of the hurricanes in Texas and Florida that was used to express their lack of sympathy for those victims.

Had you read further in the thread you would have seen that I plainly stated the wildfires suck and that I think it is beautiful country there.

Some people here can still smell the smoke from existing fires.

I had lunch on Saturday in a house that's now gone. A cousin lost a house too. We are probably going to have to evacuate our house because the particulate matter is irritating the baby (I have a sore throats myself from it).

These fires are far worse than they should be because of record temperatures we have had all summer because of climate change. Oh, but I'm supposed to be polite at calling out the dumbf**ks who made this worse by being greedy ignoramuses? Oh, yeah, it's never the right time to call people out, even when you're affected. Got it.

So it was deliberately provocative, right from the start, with an agenda, and all I'm reading in "defence" of attacking the victims of the bushfires with an innacurate characterisation is an " the ends justifies the means" excuse. An "Ogion said a similar thing about the hurricane/flood victims" excuse, we didn't like that, so now we're hitting back with this.
Let me make it clear, whilst I might often agree with the substance of Ogion's comments, there are often times I privately dislike the way he expresses things.
Just remember, if you're going to make an issue about your opponents "attacking a group" then it might be a good idea to refrain from indulging in that same behaviour yourselves.

Not everyone in Texas or other places the hurricanes hit voted to ignoring climate change. Again you got to stop demonizing the entire group when there are many different people in it Ogion...

fluminaotr, a lot of people did and do and there are real world consequences to that. Of course there are a minority of decent people in these places, but that majority who are calling the shots don't get to escape serious condemnation for their irresponsibility, just because they have some decent neighbors. I have every right to be pretty angry about that. As much as you'd like to deflect criticism from those people, they still deserve serious blame for their actions. (And yes, Zulter, when the group is defined by a common set of actions then they can be called out for it. Or are we saying that we can't condemn Nazis, terrorists, or child abusers? Those are all actions based groups too, after all)
