Homelessness is a stain on western civilization, it's a fucking abomination and is the greatest shame of our time.

No amount of economic prosperity can be worth subjecting the poorest and most unfortunate of us to such levels of suffering.

@Condescension

"subjecting" is arguably wrong, though i will admit welfare traps from government and business are prescient today.

Homelessness for those that desire to live that way is fine. But many who are homeless would much rather be sheltered. We need to do better. I'm willing to pay more in taxes to take care of these people.

I say end homelessness now by quartering all homeless persons in homes of registered democrat voters and elected officials.
This cannot be a violation of The Third Amendment (Amendment III) to the United States Constitution provided that none of the homeless persons are military veterans.

Hey, how about this idea: lets find where all of the undocumented live, pack them in a bus to the border and move the homeless into their vacant homes; two issues solved.

CAPT's attitude to the homeless is illustrative of the general lack of regard for human decency shared by most on the far right.

No, I don't want them to live in my house. I want the government to either fix the economic conditions that create homelessness, or put them in communal housing. We're generally talking about mentally ill people that (tautologically) cannot take care of themselves. Why conservatives think the proper place for these people is on street corners is beyond me.

CAPT, what is the conservative solution for homelessness? Just forget about it and bathe in your money like Scrooge McDuck?
Condescension (10 D)
25 Feb 17 UTC
You have such a brazen lack of regard for subtlety or or complexity that it makes me sad. Everything is totally black or white and all of society's problems come down to the moral failings of specific individuals. How quaint.
Condescension (10 D)
25 Feb 17 UTC
Liberals are not saying that we need to quarter the homeless in the homes of the rich. Are you smoking crack?

@No, I don't want them to live in my house. I want the government to either fix the economic conditions that create homelessness, or put them in communal housing.

you don't pay enough taxes for the government to do it.
you must be selfish because you won't share. i share.
i have a tenant who has lived twenty years in an apartment that she pays half the going rental rate for an apartment one block for the beach. i put skin in the game condensation. you just flap your gums.
Condescension (10 D)
25 Feb 17 UTC
I want the government to fix it. I want them to increase taxes on the middle class and the rich in order to accomplish that.

Charity of individuals cannot solve systemic problems.
Condescension (10 D)
25 Feb 17 UTC
But you're a conservative so the concept of structural oppression triggers you.
fiedler (1293 D)

"All of societysome problems come down to the moral failings of individuals "

Umm yes that's right?
Condescension (10 D)

If you actually believe that, you're a fucking moron.
Condescension (10 D)

The main problem with slavery wasn't that some people chose to own slaves, it is that the economic situation was predicated on slavery.

The solution to the homelessness is similarly not for individuals to be charitable but for society, as a collective, to take a stance.

Does that illustrate what I'm saying?

(If what you got from that was me saying "slavery wasn't wrong", you are, once again, a moron.)
Bladerunners (779 D)
25 Feb 17 UTC
I've got an idea to help - why don't you americans build a wall to keep mexicans out and increase your nuclear arsenal instead of ending homelessness!
slypups (1889 D)
25 Feb 17 UTC
@CAPT Brad - I'm willing to pay more in taxes for that, not generally more in taxes to be spent on whatever else the government feels like.
CAPT Brad (40 DX)
25 Feb 17 UTC
@ slypups. whatever else the government feels like.

you do not get to choose how the government spends it money. that's what the representatives do.

slypups (1889 D)
25 Feb 17 UTC
Minus the profanity and name calling, I'm with @Condescension here. There is not a solution to homelessness through individual efforts. A parallel with slavery is not far fetched, as it illustrates how a problem could not be solved by individual efforts. Why aren't we all (who can afford it) willing to pay a little more for the sake of decency to take care of such a basic necessity of life for our residents? The world view of putting ones self above others, even where it goes strongly against utilitarian benefits, is sad.

Condensation is a boy. We give children leeway as they are not old enough to understand the grown-up world.
CAPT Brad (40 DX)

there is very little homelessness in Cuba. why don't we try that system. First we confiscate all of the rich peoples homes. I heard that Condensation's parents were rich; lets start there

How do people become homeless?

Top reasons people become homeless:

31% job loss
20% drugs or alcohol use
15% divorce or separation,
13% an argument with a family member who asked them to leave
7% domestic violence.
10% eviction
7% mental health
7% physical health or medical condition.
12% incarceration
1% housing restrictions due to probation or parole

What could prevent homelessness?

When asked what would have prevented their homelessness, respondents reported:

34% employment assistance
31% rental assistance
28% drug or alcohol counseling
19% mental health services
CAPT Brad (40 DX)
25 Feb 17 UTC
the best way for helping the homeless is an economic one where people can find work. All of you leftist-communists want to set up road blocks and prevent the very things that can solve the problem.

CAPT Brad is possibly the most compassionate person on this forum because he has ACTUALLY SACRIFICED for others, rather than talking about how people should act, or saying we should throw money at a problem and feel like we did something

ISIS defeated
Trump has defeated ISIS within 30 days as President as he promised. Were not sure how he did it. Were not sure how many nukes it took. Were not sure what the secret plan was. But I for one am glad ISIS is gone. Now we can move on to Anubis, Ra and Osiris. I never liked them either.

Germany attacking Austria in 1901 Spring
Is there any rationale for doing this under any circumstance? I've seen this more often in my newer games and it really perplexes me. Can there be any justification or situation where this is worth doing?

Diplomacy: Convoy Chains
This thread is purely for fun and entertainment. Convoys can make for really interesting, exciting, and unusual moves in Diplomacy, allowing armies on one half of the board to reach the other half in one turn. My question is . . . What was the longest convoy chain you ever successfully made?

I keep thinking that she was so funny in parks and rec. Now shes like the new Dane Cook. Her humor is so 1 dimensional - apathetic - nihilist.
Look at her movie roles: grumpy cat, (some film with adam sandler) and now shes playing Daria.
