Why do I feel that I'm about to receive an ass kicking?

Tbh, I still haven't really figured out the difference between DSS and SOS. I'd favor the WTA one.

They're both WTA. The difference is only in draws.

Right. The abomination that was PPSC is gone, so there's no incentive to help someone solo and come in a close second.
My understanding is that SoS further improves the incentives by eliminating the desire to knock out that 4th player and thin the draw before drawing with 3, for example.
But I don't fully understand them, and I've heard that opinions vary.

The good thing about SoS is that playing for a good draw score and playing for a solo is the same. This fixes the downside of DSS where you have a clear choice between playing for a draw and playing for a solo.

Another advantage is that it's more "socially responsible"- there's no incentive to spend four years eliminating someone after the game is basically over. I believe (though I haven't got any evidence) that SoS games go for fewer years. I also think that SoS will help more with new player retention, because games don't drag on just to cut someone out.

A downside of SoS is that players on 1-2 centres get so close to 0 points that a solo doesn't make much difference to them (and so they may not want to form the draw if they feel slighted). This may have contributed to the high number of thrown solos at WDC this year (though I think there are other reasons for that too).

How does SOS compare to DSS for GR rankings purpose?

Based on those descriptions, I'd say DSS. The kicker for me is ATC's statement that a purported benefit of SoS is "there's no incentive to spend four years eliminating someone after the game is basically over." I dislike that type of thinking, as it encourages people to complacently end games prematurely. As Yogi Berra might have said, the game isn't "basically over" until it's over. I think many players consciously or subconsciously play to get to a 3wd or 4wd position without putting in the strategic or diplomatic effort necessary to have a realistic shot at a solo. It sounds to me like SoS promotes that.

Too bad about sweetwatersam.
