How many failed bombing attacks have their been? Countless. Bombs are not as reliable as guns.

How many gun attacks on this scale have there been? Very few. A bomb attack requires one action. A gun attack requires the attacker to make each murder a separate event. @Octavious waaay harder to make/have access to bombs than a gun. There's way more gun violence than bombings. It is also easier to stop because it requires a lot more planning. And as Putin said, they're also more likely to fail.

Tarring and feather were indeed widespread before the massacre, but those particular protesters were only taunting the soldiers when they were shot. I also don't believe that the British government was particularly oppressive at the time, and I think the US would have been better off going the Canada route.
