In his speech last night Trump was cold and unforgiving to the Iowans. He threatened to buy a farm and move to Iowa.

Quality Live Game
I was considering starting a RP (Rulebook Press?) around 4pm EST (New York City Time). I was thinking 10 minute phases (assuming that the auto ready on retreat and builds will save us a ton of time) I would prefer if you have at least 10 games to your name and the bet will be 50 D. add your name in list format below. I will send out the Passwords at 3pm EST

Checking adjacent territories
Is there any way to check ahead of time, in any manner, if two territories are adjacent? There are some territories that seem adjacent, but I don't know if fleets can travel between them. I just don't know how to see if they are or not and don't want to take the chance they aren't and try to move somewhere only to find out the next move is impossible

Playtesting my boardgame online
Hello everyone,
version 1 of my boardgame is finished. It was brought to my attention that it's probably a good idea to test it online. Two things needed there: 1. players and
2. some sort of adjudicator to use, with which I can easily add and move around 6 unit types, factories, territory markers and 4 kinds of resources, while also keeping track of various variables (although that can be done fairly easily outside of the adjudicator).
Can you help with either of those?

New site feature: Voice chat press
Its simple you get a 7 player game public voice chat and webcam channel. So its like the closest thing to ftf Diplomacy since sliced bread. Can you imagine the look on Valis face when I build a fleet in Mar and hes in Italian Leponto. Come on webcam and voice chat would be hilarious.

How to create an app?
At work we're thinking of creating an app. No one knows how to do it internally. Has anyone gone through this before? Any valuable lessons learned? Pros and cons? Cost of development and upkeep? Thank you.

I think having an off-site TrueSkill in the meantime could be very helpful so we can see how it looks. Out of curiosity, though, would it have to be monthly? Surely almost the entire process could be done automatically?

We're not getting rid of survive.
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)
29 Jan 16 UTC
No, but having it monthly means there's no change in the existing process, which in turn means there's no need for extra work for a temporary solution.
Valis2501 (2850 D(G))
29 Jan 16 UTC
The webDip EOG repository doesn't track survives, counts them as defeats, for purposes of consistency maybe it would be best...
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
29 Jan 16 UTC
Fair enough. Do you think we'd get an accurate picture of how the ranking system would work if it only ran monthly? I suppose it would settle down at some point, it would just take longer than if it updated after every game.

A Bayesian system makes a lot of sense. TrueSkill seems pretty cool. I'd definitely vote for integrated ratings.

I'd vote against complicating RR, however, other than allowing old transgressions to be provisionally overlooked with good behavior.
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)
29 Jan 16 UTC
I'm confused - GR already only runs monthly. I'm only proposing swapping TrueSkill in for GR as a temporary measure until integration is complete.

The rating system itself is actually pretty easy. Integration is the hard part requiring the most work and testing.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
29 Jan 16 UTC
Sorry, I'm not disagreeing with anything you're saying. I'm more thinking aloud, for my own curiosity, what difference we'd see in the same rating system if it were calculated monthly vs instantly. I don't think any work should be done to find the answer, though.

Best news I've heard in a while. Any thoughts on the name? Ghost Rating? Ghost Can? A Tin Maker?
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)
29 Jan 16 UTC
We'll probably just call it TrueSkill. Although I have enjoyed how value-less "TinRatings" would sound.

It's Trueskill. Call it what it is.

Wait isn't Trueskill a Microsoft algorithm? Isn't it only allowed to be used for Microsoft projects?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
29 Jan 16 UTC
Yeah if we're straight-up using TS, that's what it should be called.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

"TrueSkill is patented,[3] and the name is trademarked, so therefore it is limited to Microsoft projects and commercial projects that obtain a license to use the algorithm."

Welp, back to GR. It was fun when it lasted.
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)
29 Jan 16 UTC
I'm not aware of any reason we can't use TrueSkill, even though it was developed at MS research.

And yes, our documentation/profile pages will call it TrueSkill. My "probably" above was unnecessary.
Gobbledydook (1389 D(B))
29 Jan 16 UTC
I would expect it to be possible to find or create an open source Bayesian ranking method.
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)
29 Jan 16 UTC
abge: That information isn't available on any of the TS documentation (although, yes, the name is trademarked. I'm not a lawyer, but I don't think that's a big problem for us).

Aside: Diplomacy is also a trademark.

ATC what is your response to the text that Abge quoted?
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)
29 Jan 16 UTC
From another source: "Microsoft permits only Xbox Live games or non-commercial projects to use TrueSkill™"

We are fine.
Gobbledydook (1389 D(B))
29 Jan 16 UTC
is the source code the one that's patented? If I remember, the theory of Trueskill counts as a mathematical model, and you can't patent maths. You can however patent the implementation. So if we wrote code ourselves it would therefore not infringe upon Microsoft IP?
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)
29 Jan 16 UTC
Let us handle the legal details.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
29 Jan 16 UTC
Yup, agreed. Reading through the actual TrueSkill site, it seems pretty clear they have no problem with people using it as long as it's non-commercial.
Gobbledydook (1389 D(B))

Are we non commercial?

Design Competition
See broadexpert.com if you want to help with the design of my start-up company. You may make some money. I'm not going to a design company for a reason though :-)

Meanwhile, I want to start a discussion: I have a debating competition coming up next week and one of the statements will be: 'High school students lack ambition'. If I'm against this statement, I thought it would be a good idea to bring up the company. I'm not sure whether that's socially acceptable though?

Russian Opening to Silesia Spring '01
This opening has become a little personal favorite of mine, (if I am Russia, France or Italy) and am wondering if anyone has thoughts, experience, or tactics to share about it. Convincing Russia to do it if you are France or Italy can be difficult -- but well worth it for all involved. You need an imaginative Russian though.
