Seeking player for Argentina in UN roleplaying game!!
You want a different dip? You like the diplomatic part of diplomacy? Argentina's president is sleeping, and if he/she doesn't wake up there'll be a spot open. Then maybe this game is or you. The main thing is to be active in he global forum in a very slow world game.

JDip on Windows 10
I tried to install JDip the other day but I couldn't get it to work on Windows 10. It used to work on Windows 7 I think (unless I am thinking of XP).
Anybody had any luck getting JDip to work on Windows 10?

vDiplomacy Features
I have just started playing Diplomacy at vDiplomacy, and I must say I have been pleasantly surprised by a number of vDiplomacy innovations that don't appear to be available on webdiplomacy. Are there plans to introduce some of the same features here?

Here is my problem with everything you just said.
A) webdip points being directly tied to game wins makes for a sort of badge of honor. removing that honor by allowing someone to just pay money for points ruins the atmosphere of diplomacy.

B) If the admins adopted this method and it was successful; i am talking enough money to pay a part-time developer (maybe ATC); and then it falls off the following quarter and the site has an outstanding bill with said developer they may be forced to demand payments to cover their debts. Keep in mind I am not implying our admins couldn't handle the responsibility but I am implying that once the site has enough money to make huge changes they likely will; and once they have bills and debts they will be forced to think economically about the sites continued governance.
CommanderByron (801 D(S))

The issue here is that having the ability to buy more points could lead to the site becoming pay to play out of necessity. I do however like your one suggestion about having players be able to pay the bill for another member (req 3). This I think could help grow the site community by having established players invite friends and family into diplomacy and buy their way into high stakes games (which by virtue are more fun and entertaining) possibly encouraging their continued use of the site.
CommanderByron (801 D(S))

I think a signifigantly better option than paying to play is to allow members to trade RR for points. example: 1 percent of RR = 100 webdip points. in theory a player could trade all their RR in for 10000 D. but with our RR system that would be stupid. This would have its trade offs. If you keep your RR and have low points you have more options for games (as your RR is high) but you are limited in how mnay games and the size of the pot. If you trade RR for points then you have less options for games (as your RR is low) but you have nearly an unlimited betting ability.

@ brainbomb:

"Webdip Feature Request 4: We set up a game for all the players with 0 D or less than 5 on webdip and the winner gets 25,000 webdiplomacy points."

This would involve hundreds of players, if not thousands. There is no variant which features hundreds of players, to my knowledge.

RR gates for reliability. Points, apart from being a status symbol, gate for experience with a minimum of skill. I guess I'm just not seeing all the open games with huge pots that low-point players have any business joining? Points for donation isn't an awful idea, though.
Lethologica (203 D)

Also, I don't know about anyone else, but I wouldn't trade RR for any amount of points.

Well, some sites don't pay close attention to what's technically "legal"...

I mean I proposed the RR for points thing as an alternative for paid points. I personally think our current system is extremely intuitive and excellent.

Do ou not get boosted back to 100 once you reach below a certain point?
Jamiet99uk (808 D)
20 Jan 16 UTC
@ SkiingCougar -yes but you only get the "boost" once games end. While points are still "in play" they are not reimbursed.

I do not suppose that any of the players in the 2012 World Cup Finals game have 0 D.

Yea but it would still be a pain if your game went pn for ages and you couldnt play anymore until it ended

I believe it is a rather just system. Also -- i think there is a direct correlation between poor play and joining too many games at once....NMRs, bad strategy, and simply not caring follow.

You could also, like, not spend all your points so you don't fiend after a live game you can't pay for.
brainbomb (290 D)

Keep in mind this post was part satire.

Points in play: 230 D I have plenty of chances to still draw some of my games I am in. if not, wheyhey thats how it goes. In the meantime I can join any CD games for free too thanks to new policies, and I have and will.

I am serious about monthly points giveaways or paying for peoples entry into games, or even gifting people points.
brainbomb (290 D)
20 Jan 16 UTC
There should be a webdip user of the month that the mods choose and give points too for making this a fun community, insightful forum posts, or organizing clubs and regular live games. Like some people here do more to make this site fun than others. Why not reward that with 25 D? or 15 D?
Jamiet99uk (808 D)
20 Jan 16 UTC
Do you think you would win it?
brainbomb (290 D)
20 Jan 16 UTC
For those of you talking about webdip points as if they matter, keep in mind the upper 1% of points holders on this site (besides Czech) play rarely. You almost never see high stakes games between them, nor see any of them in tournaments.

Lets be real the points are "pointless".

Splitdiplomat has 80,000 D, thats amazing, now he hardly ever plays?

What people really care most about if we are being honest is their GR. So I would propose
Feature Request 5: Players Ghost ratings appear next to their name instead of webdip points. (Since points are in no way indicative of regular activity and quality wins)
brainbomb (290 D)
20 Jan 16 UTC
jamiet, for example, you have Total points: 174 D
I technically have more points than you but all mine are in play. Do you honestly think I am better at diplomacy than you?

Points are not an accurate representation of much of anything except hoarding on this site. I use all my points, and play every day on here. I feel that since the points are pointless and GR is what people actually measure themself by...we ought to consider just giving out tons of points. Inflation of webdip points is categorically the dumbest concern I have ever heard (didnt zultar just give out like... 1000 D to Chaqa for christmas or something?)
Lethologica (203 D)
20 Jan 16 UTC
I don't think you have the greatest visibility on correlations between points and user activity, bb (. Anyone who cares about GR knows where to look it up. And when considering feature requests like 'webdip user of the month' awards with trivial point handouts to single players, think about input:output and opportunity cost.
brainbomb (290 D)
20 Jan 16 UTC
At the risk of sounding like homeless gus, I am asking the mods to give me 500 webdip points, a stimulus package, which I will use to create a series of 5 100 point pot, fun high stakes games as part of the new live game club yoyo has started. If given this Loan of webdip points I pledge after I win 2 of the 5 games I will repay these webdip points back to the community with interest.

Points in play calculation
All,

I have read the FAQ, but it seems to state that your points in play are the sum of point that you *bet*. Mine seem to exceed that, but may be correct if they are the "current value" rather than the "bet." I could do some tedious counting, but I imagine that most of the people here know, so please pardon the "lazy ask" of someone new to this site, but a long-term Dip player.

Anyone here tried Subterfuge?
Its an iOS/Droid game similar to Neptune's Pride somewhat. Slow Realtime where movement takes hours to days to resolve, no RNG, and based on the Diplomacy tradition of deception and alliances. The key difference to Pride is a toroidal map and a different win condition. Anyone else given it a go?

Is there a way to see the global chat in a game your not in? it wouldn't make it so that you could tell someone something they wouldn't have known otherwise like showing private messages would do. I'm just wondering if there is a specific reason why you can't.
