The Fermi Paradox -- Where Are All The Aliens?
1. Estimates of stars with habitable planets range into the high billions.
2. The Sun is a typical star and there is a high probability that many other stars will have Earth-like planets, some of which have already been observed.
3. If Earth is typical, other Earth-like planets should have developed intelligent life.
4. Based on this, there should be lots of opportunities for life in the Milky Way galaxy. Where are all the aliens?

At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.
"The whole earth is the tomb of heroic men, and their story is not graven only on stone over their clay, but abides everywhere without visible symbol woven into the stuff of other men's lives."

Can you request..
NMR's to be removed if they were due to webdip server outage. I know it seems like a crazy thing to request but reputation does seem to matter quite a bit on here.

Facts based discussion on the Pyramids
Nobody denies that the pyramids exist. Now, however, it has emerged that one of the Republican party's leading candidates to run for president believes that the pyramids were built for storing grain. I know Diplomacy players are among the smartest people in the world. So I ask you – do the math. Show how the pyramids were not tombs, but granaries.

What is Your One Superpower?
Simple question, if you could have one superpower what would it be (cliche I know), and please get creative. One restriction though, your power can not give you other powers, that's cheating. With that being said, let's begin.

I confess I'm kind of curious how you all chose your names.

Mine is boring but efficient.
D = first initial of first name
Yager = Last name
NH = From New Hampshire

I can pull a bunny out of a hat where previous there was none and I can put the bunny back into the hat....but sadly I cannot change the hat into a bunny
Yoyoyozo (65 D)

Yes you can. Just pull the bunny out of the hat, then throw away the hat!

Well I'll have my hat back please, and the bunny.
Vecna (890 D)

With the right techniques in leatherworking I guess one could technically also change a bunny into a hat

@ Ogion, I just assumed you wanted to be called "Onion" and it was a typo.

My username derives from the fact that I am called Jamie, live in the UK, and first set up an e-mail account in 1999.

Mine is pretty obvious. It is the name taken from an Athenian philosopher, who lived from 460 to 400 BC, and has been called the father of scientific history.

Mine is my bear's name, Freddy Fortescue Cholmondeley (the latter is customarily pronounced 'Chumbles' - another oddity of England, like Belvoir, which is always good for getting Americans confused as to why anyone would pronounce it THAT way).

Sylvania (4104 D)

The hallowed Creator of Diplomacy, Allan Calhamer, was working for a company called Sylvania when he made the game up. He should have been advancing Sylvania's interests, not his own.
I just signed up to vDip for the first time and have switched it to the infinitely better Vylsania... which is a lot less reminiscent of Sylvanian Families.
Ogion (3882 D)

I've always gotten a chuckle out of MarquisMark, I must confess. I'm liking the Romeo and Jamiet, too.

I'm still hoping for 2ndWhiteLine to weigh in, although maybe I was too close with my guess.

Any other cryptic ones you guys are curious about?

(Alas, if I'd encountered Game of Thrones before joining, the Onion business might have been a good call. I've soft spot for Ser Davos. )

TrPrado (461 D)

Mine's an acronym. It's composed of the first letters of each of the words in the dark incantation I use to summon the spirits of the dead so that they may eat my enemies. I was entering it on my phone, which is why it starts with a capital letter, and the capital P was because I had heard the last name Prado was popular in certain countries, so that would be a good cover.

Hmm. Trying to figure it out. Obviously isn't "Ash nazg durbatulûk, ash nazg gimbatul, Ash nazg thrakatulûk agh burzum-ishi krimpatul." because that spells "Andangantab-ik" which would be kind of a cool name, now that I think about it.
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)
05 Nov 15 UTC
There are a couple of questions above about name changes- we almost never allow username changes. Part of the reason is that we don't want people to be able to hide from their reputation, and another part of it is that users having the same name all the time is good for community building (when you read a SoW post by THM, you know him by reputation to be a player worth listening to).

We do occasionally allow name changes, but only if there is a very good reason, and we treat each request individually. We usually don't discuss the reasons for the name change, but I will say that an important factor is whether it will be confusing for the rest of the site after the change. To quote WJ's examples, Gobbledydook -> Gobbledygook is therefore a better change than Ogion -> Onion. As I said, all changes are treated on their own merits, and both of those changes are unlikely to be accepted without good reason.

WJ's suggestion that we should be clearer that you can't change your name once you've signed up is great. I will add that change to the site todo list.

Oh, and I am A Tin Can, because the tin canning process was allegedly invented by Frenchman Philippe de Girard and the idea passed to British merchant Peter Durand (who was used as an agent to patent Girard's idea in 1810).

Cheating?
I'm in a gunboat game and in Autumn 1904 Austria was 2/2 in support moves for Italy and Italy was 1/1 in support moves for Austria. Perhaps they just guessed correctly what each person was doing, but how do I contact the admins to report my concerns?

Picking up "dead" CCGs from the 90s/2000s is a bit of a hobby of mine. You can often get booster boxes or cases of starter decks for a fraction of MSRP.

webDip YouTube Channel
Hello all,
I've had several people ask about the YouTube channel, so I just wanted to assure everyone that it is not dead. We were having some audio recording issues that were making the videos very time consuming to produce. Once I resolve that (hopefully very soon) I expect we will go back to a very frequent release schedule. Stay tuned!
