That depends on the GM, usually it is at least one vote per phase with at least 2 posts per day phase. Usually there are 48 hours set aside to the Day phase and 24 to the Night phase, however more activity is wanted if you are Town trying to solve the puzzle and win, people tend to get annoyed if you aren't more active.

I'd say 4-5 good quantity posts per phase and then hanging around for a while after each one to answer questions about them is the sort of level where nobody will complain you're lurking at. Games tend to last up to 4 weeks (shorter when one team is incompetent, like last game. 3 weeks is probably the average).

The main time factor is reading everything more than writing though. If you only log onto the site once or twice a day then you're going to have a lot to catch up on when you do log on. If you log on fairly regularly it's far easier to keep up. Last game had 158 pages for 6 days and 5 nights, and 25-30 pages for a day one (with latter days being progressively shorter as more people are dead) is probably the norm.

(Of course. Most people are dead in the latter weeks, so 1-2 weeks is what you're more likely to play)

There is often a flurry of activity when the phases end. Previously secret information or opinions may be revealed, or power roles may claim or fake-claim, and votes change rapidly. It's often important to be available at this time, but it is not strictly required.

It's not so bad being the Day 1 lynch. It's perfectly acceptable to be wrong about everything on Day 1, so there is much less chance of embarrassment.
