The Religious State
Having seen many opinions on this forum, I am wondering about the acceptability of a religious state. Should a state be able to be primarily Muslim, Jewish, or Christian (etc.)? Is this acceptable in the modern world? If so, how far can this theocracy of sorts go? May they make laws based upon the respective religion? How far reaching should these laws be?

Please discuss, and remain amicable.

Happy Easter everyone
On this auspicious day I would like to share with the community my belief that the resurrection of Jesus was figurative, and not literal. The "risen" Jesus is the one that won the greatest person in history tournament. Respectfully, that's what I believe. He is risen, risen indeed.

I've recently been to the vdiplomacy site and it was very interesting that the interface and logo look similar to the webdiplomacy one. Are the 2 sites somehow related?

I uploaded SunZi's "Little Dipper" Android application to Aptoide
Our very own SunZi (userID=19506) once created a useful Android app Diplomacy adjudicator based on webDiplomacy code. SunZi publically published this adjudicator app ("Little Dipper") on GetJar, where it is still free to download.

For the sake of archiving SunZi's work, which our comrade gave the bare minimum of advertising (threadID=879472 & threadID=882356), I uploaded the app to Aptoide.

What to do?
What do you do when you're playing with an asshole that has the chance to draw, but refuses to do so when it is obvious that another player is going to get a solo? He's so annoying it hurts I really don't know what to do I mean it's obvious that if we continue the game will be a solo for another guy. He simply REFUSES TO DRAW

I would propose an abolition of ALL tax deductions (both corporate and personal) and a very low flat tax created in place of the current tax code. I would end corporate welfare too. Also, I would exponentially increase tariffs on anyone with whom we have a trade deficit (looking at you, Red China!) to the point of creating de facto embargos. Also, I would unilaterally back out of the NAFTA. I would also implement federal right-to-work legislation and make it illegal for private unions to compel workers to become members.

If we want to revive the American middle class, then we have revive American manufacturing. We do that by cutting off the Red Chinese (and everyone else with whom we have a trade deficit) and ending the tyranny of both labor unions and corporate welfare.

We cannot sustain a middle class on a service-based economy. In simple terms, we need to start building shit again. I want to be able to walk into Wal-Mart and see "MADE IN USA" stickers all over the damned place.

"I would propose an abolition of ALL tax deductions (both corporate and personal) and a very low flat tax created in place of the current tax code."

Yes, that sounds good.

"I would end corporate welfare too."

Mkay, no complaints.

" I would also implement federal right-to-work legislation and make it illegal for private unions to compel workers to become members."

Pretty sure that second part is illegal already, but nothing against the spirit of what you say.

"Also, I would exponentially increase tariffs on anyone with whom we have a trade deficit (looking at you, Red China!) to the point of creating de facto embargos. Also, I would unilaterally back out of the NAFTA."

Annnnnd full stop. No, just no. You know what embargos do? Get counter-embargos. Take a trade class, please. I have some books that I highly suggest you reading too, if you're up for it (Short, like 100 pages). But this idea ^^ would utterly wreck the US economy. We don't need manufacturing for a middle class to form.

Abge - you can afford to have kids with $120k fairly easily....

NAFTA is awesome. We need to expand it.

MADE IN USA folks need to wake up to a global economy or they will get left in the dust.

Do you even realize that the majority of salaried professionals in america (IE THE MIDDLE CLASS) earns their living by working on products that are built outside of USA? And the USA USA USA chant for items built here is just a gimmick. They are ASSEMBLED here. The brainless part of the job to screw in 2 complex pieces that are manufactured outside of the country.

But , but..

They are designed & engineered in the USA. The headquarters are in the USA. The freight and logistics are sourced and completed through the USA. The tooling, quality systems, and machine building for the assembly lines are all done in the USA.

You want to regress?

Go to Mexico.

@abge - are we agreeing with each other? I think so. You're saying it would not be as easy as everyone thinks to support a family of 4 on 120k. I agree with you. It's doable, sure, but it's not like everyone is assuming (probably because of the age of the college goers here). After taxes, 401k contribution, and medical deductions, there's not as much left as you'd think.

This supports the fact that the 120k is in range with the 40-80% middle class. It's doable. You will have to pay down your debt if you want to have better living for your family. Otherwise, you can live in a 900 sq ft house and be happy together.

I support a family of four on 75K. It was hard when we had a lot of debt, which we did for years, but a death of a parent bailed us out, and now 75K is plenty with no debts to deal with.

SD, You're right and I apologize for the tone.

Yet, "awful free market capitalist shit" was your comment that seemed very vague and ignorant. If you want to discuss NAFTA and the pros and cons, state what is so awful about it, and I will counter.

You income is relative to where you live. $150k makes you middle class in any large urban area. The money is rural area or many suburban areas goes a lot further
I'm on the cell now but I'll post later :-) thank you for your apology too.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
01 Apr 15 UTC
Yes, ss, it's all relative, which is part if what makes this discussion difficult.

Honestly, I don't see why everyone can't have access to health care, healthy food, education, and a safe place to live. These things should be just givent to everyone outright regardless of character or work ethic. No crazy coupons or tax breaks. If they want more, they can work for it. I don't care if the richest person buys the moon as long as everyone has at least the above.

ssorenn is exactly right. Where I am right now (Durham, NC) I could rent a goddam mansion of a house (5 bedroom, 3.5 bath, built in the last 10 years, good neighborhood) for ~$2,000 a month. To buy it, probably a half million at absolute most (though I haven't looked into those prices).

So lets say after taxes you're at $90,000, after house payments at $60,000, health insurance at $45,000. Those are some rather sweeping assumptions I've made, but you can fairly easily support 4 people with $45,000 in disposable income.

Convoying Question - the roundabout
Let us suppose someone has an army in Yorkshire and a fleet in North Sea. However, the army is beset by enemies in London and Liverpool.
Our army in Yorkshire is going to be pushed out. If we assume the attack will come from London supported by Liverpool... could our army in Yorkshire, convoy through the fleet in North Sea and land again at the newly vacated London?
