Rape and murder in India
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-31698154

How can a human being be so twisted in their mind that they would calmly argue that a woman who was kidnapped, gang-raped, and murdered, was the one to blame for her fate?

LAPD Officer Shoots and Kills Homeless Man
http://news.yahoo.com/video-shows-los-angeles-police-shooting-homeless-man-060031475.html The video's already generating controversy (you can watch the unedited version on YouTube, I'll post it, they had to edit it for broadcast) so, yeah...what's everyone's opinion on this incident?

Is the game losing its way? (Takes a while to get to the subject)
I was reading about Henry Kissinger last October when I read that he was a fan of a game called Diplomacy. Naturally I was curious, so I looked this game up. No exaggeration, I haven't stopped playing since October. I also found a site: diplomacy-archive.com
It is from there that I learned the secrets and the tricks of the game and where I read many articles written by players of the game DECADES AGO.

Newbie Question
In the Fall of the first year, I convoyed my army from Yorkshire to Norway, using a fleet that was already in the North Sea. It is now the Build phase, but my unit is not in Norway and I'm not being offered a build option for controlling Norway. Did I do something wrong?

Do you play any other awesome board games?
So Diplomacy is doubtlessly a GREAT game - so simple yet so complete. The chess of our times, so on, so on...
But, there are many other good board games. Are there any games you can recommend?
I personally love Twilight Struggle and Through the Ages, while hate Risk.

Cosmic Encounters stands out as one of the best games I've played. Endless variety, no two games are the same.

LCG = Living Card Game. Every other month they come out with a new set of 60 cards to spice things up. No randomness/collectorsness in the packs though (which is where the name comes from. It's a play off of CCG).

Cosmic Encounter always seemed possibly the closest ameritrash will ever get to Diplomacy. Of course Cosmic Encounter was designed before the modern boardgaming era much like Diplomacy so it's not a complete surprise

I always enjoy a good game of Khet. (The Egyptian light reflection game.)

I think that people who enjoy the complex strategy and lack of dice in diplomacy should try explore beyond 'lighter' games like ticket to ride and Catan.

By far my favourite game at the moment is Agricola. It's got a good iOS app if anyone fancies a game.

My friends of about 25 years still get together on Sunday night to play Magic and strategy games.
Most recently we have been playing alot of Puerto Rico and 7 Wonders. Puerto Rico is awesome. Wonders is easily learned but sifting out an actual strategy is elusive to us.

I'd say Monopoly is probably my favorite

Tiny Epic Kingdoms is low-luck and has an interesting simultaneous war mechanic where each side bids how many resources they're willing to pay to win the war, with only the total resources available known to each player of course, and then whoever bids more wins the battle, with both sides paying regardless of outcome. It is possible to "ally" with others (which has formal bearing unlike a Diplomacy "ally") by both players bidding 0.

Pleasantly surprised to see a Rail Baron mention, I grew up with it. Too much randomness though, if the dice hate you there's nothing you can do. I once went bankrupt in a three-player game, which we had not have believed to be possible. Also had a friend who was notorious for buying the Santa Fe after one payoff, leaving himself with 2 or 3 thousand in operating cash, and getting away with it every single time.

If anyone wants to turn Settlers into a much better game, I highly recommend turning the Desert into a roll-7 Alcohol resource. You can trade alcohol like other resources or give them to someone to make them take a shot. It's pretty great.

@Hazel

Glad to finally hear of someone else who knows about it! It is very fun, but I agree there's a bit too much luck. If you aren't rolling well, though, you could always buy the Super Chief : )

Abge, if I ever could have afforded it, it probably wouldn't have helped. I was constantly having to go to cities already locked up by the other players, doing the "spend $20,00 to make $12,000" thing three out of every four runs. It was insane. I was auctioning off my few railroads almost right away, and was probably dead within an hour.

That was nearly twenty years ago, a date which has lived in infamy, thankfully never repeated. Played this Christmas with my dad, my sister, and her husband, and kicked some ass with my unstoppable Santa Fe/PA connection!

Yeah, I know the feeling. The worst is when it's a 10ish trip and it still takes you 3 turns. Such a waste of time and money.

My friends always rush for ATSF, PA, CRIP, UP, etc. Personally, I like buying the really small railroads and connecting them together. You save so much money and can still get everywhere. I also always try to get both SAL and ACL. It doesn't happen often, but when someone lands in Miami, they usually go bankrupt : )
Hazel-Rah (1262 D)
21 Feb 15 UTC
The bad game I was talking about, I had to go to Miami two or three times with the SAL and ACL already in competitors' hands. Of course when I manage to monopolize the southeast myself, I'm lucky if anyone else goes there once in a game...

Actually played against THE Rail Baron (the guy with his picture on the box) once. He did a lot of game testing for Avalon Hill (back when it existed), and they grabbed him one day, put the goofy hat and gloves on him (if you've seen it, you know what I'm talking about), gave him a cee-gar, took his picture and put it on the box.

I used to play a lot of chess, but don't any more. Now, almost all my gaming time is spent on Android: Netrunner.

I also play BSG, Twilight Struggle, Dominion and 7 Wonders semi-regularly, along with Resistance and Loveletter for quick filler games.

I just discovered Eclipse and I love it. Great game. Risk, chess, stratego, and monopoly are all up there too. I really need to play settlers of catan, I've heard a lot of good things about that one.

I really enjoy Imperial as a game that looks a lot like diplomacy but isn't. It requires diplomacy skills, but is about making profit from owning shares in multiple countries and going to war for tax purposes!

Other than Diplomacy, my favorite game is A Game of Thrones. However, it is far more complex and, as a result, much harder to get people to play.

basic gunboat strategy
does anyone have an article or whatever on various gunboat strategies for all 7 countries say from spring 1901-autumn 1902? after that, im assuming the board will be unique enough to warrant a unique strategy but i want to know about different opening options in the beginning of the game. thanks!
