Nanar
For those of you unfamiliar with the term, Nanar basically means that something is so bad it's good. The purpose of this thread is to share works (movies, tv series, etc...) that are so bad they are good so we can all enjoy a hearty laugh. I will start by suggesting INFERNO COP! a roughly 40 minute long web series which fits this idea so well. From the Beginning: http://tinyurl.com/qfgz62j

Is America truly exceptional?
So in my late night perusing of youtube I managed to find these two videos:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPHSXUS0_1c https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8UqdPKbpWM and it got me thinking. Is America truly exceptional right now? (My inclination is no) and if not, what can we do to be such? Please discuss (with politness and civility).

I don't know if we're average at everything, but I guess that depends on how you define average. If I remember, we're ranked 15th in education proficiency, this isn't number 1, but its well above average. We're also ranked incredibly high considering we're one of the largest countries in the world, and compared to other high ranking education countries very diverse (think of counties like Sweden and Japan who are considered to be to of the best).

The one thing America is truly exceptional in is believing in their exceptionalism.

Oh also. This sentence was a gem. Were you just trolling? "The tolerance that exists for other religions or ethnic groups or lifestyles is not found everywhere else."

Yes. Emphatically, yes.

At least for the time being and for the 20th century.

No other country has the political, economic, and military power of the United States. No one else comes even close.
US is number 2 in economic power...
What metric are you going by?
size of the economy
US has highest GDP by a long shot. http://www.npr.org/blogs/money/2012/05/30/153950742/the-worlds-richest-countries-and-biggest-economies-in-2-graphics

So Russia just took a small jaunt across their border and caused a ruckus.
That's easy.

Geopolitical policy considerations aside, the United States is capable of projecting that sort of power anywhere in the world. It is really the only nation that can do so. It's not jingoistic to say that. It's a fact.
Strauss (758 D)

"There was no war."

I don't want take away your view of the reality.

"And I'm pretty sure the third reich would have made a similar cartoon for the Sudetenland"

You have watched too many cartoons. Caricatures are a graphic form of the satire which gets on as a biased criticism of existing values or political relations in social discussions. The caricature consciously exaggerates, sharpens and distorts typical features of an event (or a person) to move the viewer to a reflection by the indicated contrast to the reality. Moreover, you fulfil Godwin's Law as quick as possible and also negates the history.
Actually, I think it echos history quite well. I don't know why you think I am bashing cartoons, I am bashing simplistic cartoons.
I forgot that I have to couch all historical comparisons in anti-US terms. Whipe out sudatenland and replace it with texas. Does that sit better for all your European sensibilities. hurumph hurumph
"American exceptionalism" can be understood to mean a lot of things. I think we can rule out a few. The people who live here aren't particularly special, for instance- how could we be, when almost all of us came here from somewhere else? Maybe we're exceptional in a cultural sense: the whole "melting pot" thing is pretty distinctively American. Certainly, we're exceptional in a technological sense- while I'd say the English got the Industrial Revolution rolling, America, for one reason or another, has produced an outsize percentage of innovations that define the lives today of many the world over. Granted, a lot of those innovations were byproducts of military spending... Which is indisputably exceptional. While we may struggle to best non-governmental entities, the U.S. has singlehandedly made war between established states all but impossible- you may point to Russia's imperialistic bullshit as of late, but I feel like that fits within the paradigm of "all but impossible" in a practical sense. The United States is exceptional, too, in its domestic stability, and in the cultural and structural mechanisms contributing to that stability. Within our governmental system is built all the necessary tools permitting the state to modify itself in accordance with evolving cultural norms and values- there is no fear of violent revolution, as our system permits non-violent revolution, albeit on a longer timescale. Yeah, democracy is hardly uniquely American, and our system is far from perfect, but there's a reason nobody worries about the United States collapsing and failing to pay its debts. There's a reason the American dollar is, generally, the currency of global trade. The United States is exceptional in its staying power. Idk, this is getting long.

As for "why"? Someone else coined that term for us--Alexis de Tocqueville almost 200 years ago.

The United States is still by far the most popular destination for emigrants, some million or so every year. The only reason we don't get more from Africa is because the Atlantic Ocean is much larger than the Mediterranean.

http://www.migrationpolicy.org/programs/data-hub/maps-immigrants-and-emigrants-around-world
This is why I hate discussions about exceptionalism. It tends to boil down to Americans chanting USA-NR1-USA-NR1 in a more academic fashion. All the while ignoring the potential lessons to be gleaned from other countries' development.

Yes, the US is the world's only superpower. Here, have a cookie.

The term American exceptionalism makes it acceptable to be ignorant about other countries, they're 'not like us'. That's also why the US is also so pissed about the UN all the time - there, the US is confronted directly with the fact that it actually *is* just one equal among many.
I'm sorry, I believe several Americans said exceptionalism is not the case

Oh I get it, stereotyping, just like "makes it acceptable to be ignorant about other countries"

Just typical Euro ignorance and Amerophobia
Am I not allowed to say that last part? is it only acceptable when some one across the atlantic says it?
There is no forum or institution in which the U.S. is an equal among many. And why should there be? The guy with the biggest gun calls the shots. That's always been the case, and it always will be.
The UN is to the US what the EU is to Germany. A supposedly equalizing body that functions more as another tool in the pseudo hegemon's toolbox.

Quo Vadis USA?

America has no friends, but only interests, headlined appropriately a newspaper the present situation. I allow myself as a "friend" to appeal a development which concerns the whole world.

Military seen was the Iraq war of course from US-American view a success. However, with the second production target, the penetration of the political aims, the Iraq adventure also turned out for Washington as a disaster. The political winner is called Iran. Morally it was a mistake - how so often. The layout of the Arabian world occurred in inhabitant afterwards ran off of Washington's autonomously. Today we feel the results.

Obama was done from Israel and the Neoconservatives far out in unknown waters. UN, NATO, the British parliament and the rest of the world left him alone there to wage a war against Syria - wouldn't have been Putin there! It exceeded Obama's possibilities, but instead of rowing back and searching an excuse, he decided on the idea to buy the congress and to spread other lies.

The White House and his media say the congress that it is too mortifying for the president of the only "Superpower of the World", to have take back and to surrender, only because he has lied. The congress has to do this "keep up appearances", or prestige and credibility of the United States of America will be lost. Besides, was the NSA scandal (Yes we scan!) already a diplomatic atom bomb. Construction work was asked.

Should the White House succeed, with the approval of the congress for a military attack on Syria and also persuade the British parliament and the NATO to take part, in spite of the strong opposition of British and the European people, then would be discredited the western democracies everywhere. Where is there the democracy if a few elites can act in the lead what they want, and every crime commit in spite of the majority of the citizen who is against it?

It's clear, that the overpowering majority of the American people is against an attack on Syria. Whether the Americans in the course of the years on endless war lies of Washington have got on, or whether recognize to them simply no sense of the wars and no use for America after 12 years of expensive wars, I can't say. In a time in which a high percentage of the Americans has problems to be able to pay for living, car and food on the table, wars of Washington appear an expensive luxury.

These aren't only the civilian populations of Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia and Syria which have suffered. Ten thousands from America's youth were killed, mutilated in perpetuity or suffer from constant postal-traumatic stress. Of Washington wars have thousands of divorces, alcoholism, drug addiction and homelessness brought, behind the light been led and whose humanity was abused by the criminals, in Washington rule.

The congress is the high house of the representatives of the American people and not the target butt for the confidential agendas of the administration, the disregard of the will of the people and the approval with wars which the people of America don't want to have. It's a big blow against the democracy.

America is a country in which a small elite possesses all power and after Pleasure acts. Should the congress position itself behind Obama's wish for war against Syria, the congress will have pushed the world closer to the atomic war. The Syrian government has started no war and has threatened nobody. Russia and China see that UN has no power to prevent aggression, and that the aggression of Washington is also directed against them. If Russia and China develop her nuclear forces, they will stronger also
include Iran. Iran delivers 20% of the Chinese oil need.

Who has a feel to understand also the other side, will ascertain, that the Russian and Chinese government have lost any trust in Washington. None of both governments believes lies of Washington and both countries are aware that Washington tries to isolate them diplomatically and to encircle with military bases. Both countries know that they can expect the same demonizing by the western media (topically Putin) like Saddam Hussein, Muammar Gaddafi and Assad them have found out. They know that western demonizing is the prelude forms for destabilization and military attack.

With pretension, arrogance and legal incapacity of Washington, Russia and China recognize an enemy who is over on her destruction. Because no country accepts his doom, a consent of the congress to the rescue of "America's Prestige" would be the conditions for an escalation and the worst case the nuclear war. If the congress refuses furthermore to stoop for a war crime on the basis of a lie, Obama's bribery and intimidation rejects and forbids the attack on Syria, then means this the end of the
influence of the Israel lobby, the Neoconservatives and the war malicious agitators John McCain and Lindsey Graham.

Without Washington's neoconservative lasciviousness of war, the governments of the world could be to gathered in spite of mighty and own-addicted private interests in the position to receive the life on the earth, while they protect an increasingly vulnerable environment from the predatory attacks of private capitalism. If it the congress doesn't get to turn away furthermore the war which Obama obviously searches, the danger is a manifesto that the world will not exist any more as well as we knew it.

Many good points there, Strauss. Some a bit off the mark, but some right on. The United States still has many friends, even if they don't like some of the international posturing of late.

I will point out one thing regarding the headline, "Quo Vadis, USA?"

Why does the rest of the world need to know where we are going, if not to follow our lead?
@Santa: My point isnt anti-Americanism (those who know me would find the suggestion amusing). My point is that "exceptionalism" as a topic tends to mistakenly focus on metrics of longest phallus, which isn't enlightening or helpful.

Like I said before, the US is a superpower like Britain, Spain and others before it. *That* is an interesting comparison.
