On Time
Two interesting articles that I thought could serve as a starting point for a discussion on time. How does time as we perceive it differ from time as a property of the universe? What meaning can humans extract from a clock that is so accurate it keeps different time on the floor or on a table?

Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor
Next question!
Should I get this one? 25% off, now €37,49.
I heard it's good, but is it good enough for that price for a casual gamer like me, who will perhaps not be able to give it the time to enjoy 'all of it'?

Violence and Death Threats in the Forum
Guys, Yellowjacket and Thucy started this violence and "kill him" thing in the Bible thread, aimed at me, and were silenced for it. Since then Thucy actually opened a thread with the same wording (or almost) and now chaqa has jumped on the meme.

Threads not serving purposes
Threads are now being locked, without breaking any rules whatsoever, because "they serve no purpose." (Coincidentally, said threads had a high concentration of posts critical of the mods, and of particular mods almost universally held to be hugely overreactive, in particular).

I got this juicer and made kale juice with it. It's rather harsh. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for vegetables to make juice out of. I have some bok choy but I doubt that will be delicious in juice form.

Gunboat Game
I want a new game, but I can't handle a press game right now. Looking for 6 decent, reliable, gunboat players. I have a fair number of points, a lot of GR, and I'm terrible at GB, so consider it a donation.

The game will be WTA, 24 hrs, bet doesn't matter to me.

Speed of electrons: calculated/theorised based on what observations?
I understand that you can calculate the speed of an electron if you know it's time and place at various times, but I can't imagine how one would observe these things in the first place. Presumably one observes something else and uses calculations based on a theory combined with these observations, but I'd like to know what those actual observations are.

Who were the other players? And well done. 5,008 D, I believe.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

I'll have to get their names tomorrow; there were just too many people to keep track of.

I think the first game went well overall. I played a very aggressive game against Germany, who was good enough to fend off an attack against me and France for several years. For a while, things looked very good as Russia was consumed by war in the south. Despite that, he built in the north, saying he wanted a piece of Germany. That should have been a tip-off, but I was more concerned with how slowly things were going with Germany so I naively accepted the help.

Well, as you would expect, that quickly resulted in Russia taking Scandinavia, but due to some poor orders, it left me in SWE. We spent several years fighting in Scandinavia while France got bigger and bigger. He used some units to help Italy defend against Turkey, who had taken most of Austria. He used the rest of his units to fill in from behind as I moved forward against Germany. At one point, I was extremely vulnerable to France, with all my units around Scandinavia and him in NTH, if you can believe it. Ultimately, he didn't stab me because probably because Russia was sill very large.

I then had a great turn, taking NWY, DEN, KIE, and BER, bringing me up to 8 centers, at which point France could no longer easily take me out and Russia was crushed. Unfortunately, I had a painful misorder that resulted in France getting the upper hand again, but by that point everyone was ready to draw.

There was a solo? Damn.

Would you mind posting the scores?
JimTheGrey (968 D(S))
08 Nov 14 UTC
Bill Hachtenbracht(sp?) soloed, so he's in first with 28,034 D. Chris Martin was stopped at 17, so he has 7,013. Your board-topper is in third with 7,010. You're probably in sixth or seventh, heading into round 2.

That's all unofficial but based on what people were saying last night and this morning on Facebook. The solo apparently happened at 3:30 a.m.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

Alright, not bad. Well have to see how today goes.

There is something odd with this scoring system though. Same number of points for topping with 10 or 17 centers.
JimTheGrey (968 D(S))
08 Nov 14 UTC
Yup, your rank is what matters most. Center count essentially serves as a tie-breaker.
JimTheGrey (968 D(S))
08 Nov 14 UTC
Whoops, Chris is at 7,017, not 7,013. Still, not much better than your board-topper.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
08 Nov 14 UTC
Yeah I figured. Alright. Goal for this game: be the saver and not the saved so I can top the board.
JimTheGrey (968 D(S))
08 Nov 14 UTC
Also, keep in mind that it's better to sit alone in a rank than share it with someone. Topping a board with 8 centers is worth 7,008 D. Finishing in a 17-17 draw gets you 6,517.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
08 Nov 14 UTC
How are ties scored?
JimTheGrey (968 D(S))
08 Nov 14 UTC
You split the two ranks.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
08 Nov 14 UTC
OK. Thanks
JimTheGrey (968 D(S))
08 Nov 14 UTC
If there are three in the tie, they split the three ranks. So, a three-way tie for first is worth 6,000 D ((7,000 + 6,000 + 5,000) / 3) plus the center count, the same as finishing second.
