Synesthesia
I have always known that I perceive letters and numbers to have colors, but only just recently have I discovered that this condition has a name - Synesthesia. I'm curious as to whether anyone else on webDip thinks the letter K looks green or the letter A looks red...

Thoughts?

WebDiplomacy Mafia II: vDiplomacy Invasion
NOTE: The rules for this game are almost exactly the same as for the last one, but with changes to the TIE-RESOLUTION METHOD and the additions of the MOLE and QUESTION ASKER roles. If you read the rules in the last thread, you can just skip to these sections in this one, as the rest is the same. If you did not, it is strongly advised you read the whole of the below post.

BST is GMT+1, so the game starts at 7PM GMT, if you want a better reference point for working out the time in your own timezone.

Krellin - The star is the thing that appears by the thread title when you've posted in it. Not sure why everyone needs to star it now, as they'll likely be posting here anyhow this afternoon, but it makes it more visible from the homepage.

Thanks - That link should help. In the vote updates I'll put time remaining on the phase as well as the process time, as that will be the same for everyone and so will help avoid confusion.

My next post will signal the start of the game - apologies that the story is a little hard to read, I didn't have it prepared so I've had to rush it :)

It was a dark and stormy night outside the gates of the town of WebDiplomacy. The road was deserted – nobody in their right mind would be outside in a storm like this.
Nearly deserted. One lone, hooded figure darted across the road, looking behind him regularly, as if to make sure nobody was following him. He headed directly for an old, disused barn a little way off the path, and entered quickly upon reaching it.

“Sorry I’m late. I had to find an excuse to come off duty.”

“It’s about time. We haven’t seen you in weeks,” came a voice from the shadows. Three figures, also hooded, had been waiting for him.

“I haven’t been able to. After those webDippers failed to stop the Bearnstein multis, everyone on the Mod Team had to work full time getting rid of them. Only just managed to clear it all up, too.”

“Yes, we know about that. It’s a godsend – they were so busy dealing with that and trying to unban everyone those quarantined players ended up banning that they rushed through the RR without checking the code.”

One of the figures who had not yet spoken chimed in.

“The fact that Kestas was banned in the chaos probably had something to do with that.”

“Anyway,” said the one who had been last to arrive, “I’ve made sure everything’s ready. Combined with the code we’ve managed to sneak through with the variants, the code in the RR will make a ‘Wipe’ button appear on your settings pages tomorrow. Only one of us needs to press it, and every user, every game, every forum post, every backup, everything about WebDip will be wiped from the site and transferred to vDip. The URL will redirect there, and even if they notice what’s happened quickly it won’t make a difference – the admin rights will be transferred to whoever clicks the button, so they won’t be able to do anything.”

“Well done. vDip is better than webDip in every respect – more features, more variants… The only thing we’re missing is the playerbase. If this works, we’ll skyrocket to being a real contender for the best Diplomacy site on the web – and at the same time we’ll take out the main competitor.”

The last figure finally spoke.

“We should make ready for tomorrow by taking up lodgings in the town tonight. We will only be able to activate this from there. As soon as the button appears, hit it – I don’t care who does so, but it needs to be done before anyone realises what’s going on.”

“I’ll head back to Mod HQ. You should all head for the hotels in the Forum; people are up there all night arguing so nobody will notice you slip in.”

There was a general murmur of agreement, and the four headed out of the barn and back towards the town.

*******************************************

“…never, never, never again. Do you understand me?”

Goldfinger was speaking to President Eden in the Special Operations room in the Mod HQ. The room was a mess, with bits of paper everywhere, and at least a hundred tabs open on a dozen different computers.

“It wasn’t my idea! I just… errr… Ran it and egged them on a bit… Look, it’s not as bad as it sounds! How was I to know that they would ban everyone except the multi? In any case, it was you who quarantined them all in the first place, and gave them the ability to ban one another. And you were the one who put Kestas and Abge and Jmo in with them.”

“That’s beside the point. You shouldn’t have encouraged it by treating it as if it were a game. Real accounts were at stake here! Anyhow, at least it’s over with now – that was the last of them. I think we can both agree that that was not a good way of banning multis. Next time, let’s keep this within the mod team.”

At this point, a ‘You got mail’ sound came from the computer next to goldfinger. He swivelled his chair around and grabbed the mouse, closing at least fifteen tabs before coming to his email.

“Oh god… Not another crisis! We’ve only just finished with the last one!”

“What is it?” asked PE, glancing at the monitor. Gold didn’t answer. He was already in the corner of the room, banging his head against the wall. The email was from Yebellz, who didn’t often contact the mods, so it must have been important. PE sat down in Gold’s seat and started reading it.

“To Kestas and the Mods,” the email began,

“I am sorry to have to bring this to your attention during what I know is a busy time, but it is important and urgent. I was looking through the RR code yesterday, and it differs significantly from the vDiplomacy version – there are sections of code that appear to do nothing related to the RR, and other sections that contain a huge amount of code for what should be a simple process. I knew when I saw this that something wasn’t right about it, so I decided to look into this.

It was difficult to piece together, but it seems to be some sort of shut down code – it’s not the entirety of it, which is why it was so hard to find out what it did, but the rest is hidden elsewhere in the code (mainly in the variants section). It’s on a timer; tomorrow, a button will appear on several users’ profiles which will activate the shut down if pressed. I haven’t managed to find out exactly what users, but I think I’ve narrowed it down to the following:”

A list of users followed. Upon reading them, PE grabbed a notebook from the side and jotted them all down. He turned towards goldfinger, about to ask a question, when he realised gold had knocked himself out. Instead, he ran out the door and bumped into 2ndWhiteLine.

“Are you off to the lounge? Everyone else has been in there since we got the last Bearnstein multi.”

PE shook his head and explained the situation. 2WL looked downcast.

“Ugh… We’ve spent two weeks working full time already. I thought we would finally get some time off.”

“Maybe we could….” PE replied.

2WL glanced at him, and was instantly aware of what he was suggesting.

“Oh, no. Not again. You know how that went last time.”

“Yeah, but last time they nearly got the last guy and they’ll have learned since then. I’m certain it will be fine, and it means we don’t have to go through the process of removing all the code.”

“Well… Okay. Who do we need to quarantine?”

“I have the list here. We need to round them all up and change their usernames so nobody knows who they are – some of the people on this list are high profile members and we wouldn’t want anyone to panic about them potentially being banned.”

With that, 2WL and PE set to work.

**************************************

Goldfinger woke up in the Mod HQ with a headache. Someone was shaking him awake.

“Gold? Gold?”

Gold looked up. It was Yebellz.

“How did you get in here? You shouldn’t have access.”

“Old key from when I was a mod. Anyhow, there’s more important things going on here. Are you aware PE just quarantined everyone I put on that list?”

This took a second or two to sink in.

“What?! But I told him we were never going to do that again! I need to go and get them out again, so we can deal with this properly.”

“I’m afraid it’s too late for that,” Yebellz said, pointing at the clock, “The button will have activated – if you let them out then whoever put it in will click it and bring down the site. You can’t let them out of quarantine.”

“Don’t you have any idea who the perpetrators might be? We’re obviously looking for someone vDip related – it shouldn’t be too hard to find who it is, your list had already narrowed it down to 18 users.”

“There’s a problem with that as well… You see, I analysed the code again when I had the chance, and the users on the list, and I managed to find a couple of things – the first is that there are four people involved in this, and the second is that three of those must be Sleepcap, Fasces349 and Kaner406. It’s obvious when you look at it; these three are majorly vDip players and all of them are currently or have been moderators there. As for the fourth… I’m not sure.”

“Well, we can at least ban those three, right? Then Eden’s quarantine will be much more likely to succeed.”

“There’s a problem there too. Eden decided to make all of his quarantined users anonymous by changing their usernames. I have no idea who these three are now. This also means that I have no idea who the other people on the list are, either, and that’s slightly more worrying.”

“Wait…” Goldfinger tried to recall the contents of the list, “There were mods on there, right? Jmo, Captain and Zultar? And Kestas too? Wait… Has PE locked up Kestas in his quarantine?”

“Yep. And Blankflag too – I think you unbanned him by accident when you were dealing with those last multis, and now we have no idea who he is either.”

“Oh god… I can see how this is going to turn out.”

Goldfinger started to walk towards the door.

“What are you going to do?” Yebellz called after him.

“Well, there’s not much I can do, right? Might as well watch the game. Let’s just hope this doesn’t turn into another huge mess.”

THE GAME HAS STARTED! It is now the first day phase, which will end in 48 hours (8PM Sunday BST).

Hello fellow town members,
It is crucial that we reopen discussion on the lynch/no-lynch first day debate and whether we should encourage or discourage night posts. Some of you might be thinking we had these discussions last game. Case closed.

However, it is absolutely essentially that we have these discussions again. Because there is no town, or mafia answer to these question, there are benefits and downsides whichever way we choose. Furthermore because, as townies we begin this game with a huge information disparity, and by analyzing peoples responses to these questions we may be able to increase the amount of information we have, and thus increase our odds. We should be highly suspicious of anyone who is unwilling to open these discussions because talking can only help the town.

My responses to each question follows:
Personally unless someone’s answers or votes strike me as especially suspicious I am inclined to vote no-lynch on day one. As long as we are discussing our suspicions we will still produce a good volume of information. We will miss out one identity reveal in the night, however in exchange we will likely have an extra townie still standing come day two. If I do vote no lynch, (or if we vote to lynch for that matter) I will be posting my suspicions using the ranking matrix discussed last game.

On the second question I think that once the day ends and we see the corpses everyone should react. Doing so ensures we get information, besides just an identity from whomever the mafia decides to kill. Yes it does give the mafia more information with regards to what the town is thinking about doing next turn. However, by giving the mafia more information it makes it easier to predict their motivations for the kill and can also make the doctors job easier, by providing him with more information.

In both instances there are equally good reasons to choose the opposite response, we just have to decide which “package” of benefits and problems we feel will be best for the town. Regardless of what the town decides, even if we make the same decision we made last time, reopening discussion on both of these issues is crucial. We should all be highly suspicious of anyone who feels there is no need to discuss these questions.

I'm generally in favor of trying to pick out a suspicious person after our talks and get in a first-day lynch. I know I expressed the same opinion last game when I was Mafia, but I did so to make myself seem like town because I definitely believe that it benefits the town to make the first move rather than the mafia. Night talking should obviously be kept to a minimum, as I see night talking among the town as more helpful for the mafia than being helpful for the cop/doctor/vigilante.
y2kjbk (4846 D(G))

In terms of someone suspicious for a first-day lynch, I do NOT think someone who is quiet on the first day should incur too much suspicion, especially given that a number of players may not be able to jump in and start the party until halfway through the day. Suspicion on the first day should be solely relegated to flawed logic actively proposed by the player in question.

First of all, I'm excited to play- I couldn't help but read through the last game (and PE's game on that other site; my first read- PE is scum in that game) so I'm excited to play.

I don't know what the ranking matrix is that damian is talking about, but I'd like to. As far as discussions during the night, it seems to me that that is a HUGE town advantage so I don't see why we wouldn't, although I think the main thing is to post your thoughts just before day begins so that you can get your opinions out in case you die. I don't get why you would talk with as much substance before then, it seems like that would be better for the mafia- maybe you can explain, damian?
y2kjbk (4846 D(G))
09 May 14 UTC
Please clarify this HUGE advantage the town gets by discussing during the night? The discussions will often be significantly rattled by the loss of any members during the night before the town even gets to actively vote on anyone. And mafia members will just get more insight into the logic of the town and be more primed to leave be any town members suspected of foul play, as well as to target anyone who is close to identifying mafia.
uclabb (589 D)
09 May 14 UTC
As far as lynch/no lynch, I was reading this argument last game, and this is what I would have said then and still believe now-

Imagine if there were no special roles. Then it is 100% clear that you should lynch on day 1. Why? Let's flip it around. I think everyone would agree that given the opportunity, the mafia would want to lynch in that situation if the first phase were night. Thus it's an *indisputable fact* that town would want the first lynch to be during the day (I hope that is clear- I feel like it is clearer in my head than the way I just wrote it).

However, we aren't in that situation. In this game there are a couple of special roles that make it so that night actually has some positives for the town. I pretty firmly believe though that the gain of one read by the detective and the slight possibility of a save by the doctor don't tilt the scales enough from the above situation to make it so that a first day lynch is not the way to go.
ghug (5068 D(B))
09 May 14 UTC
I'd argue that we should default to not lynching anyone and change that if someone arouses significant suspicion. There's no reason to kill someone just for the sake of killing someone, but if there's a reasonable reason to kill someone, than killing is reasonable.
krellin (80 DX)
09 May 14 UTC
I tend to agree with y2k, but that's only because I'm a gambling man and love to give the old wheel a spin and hope for the best...assuming, of course, that our best is based upon some good discussion.

To that extent, our discussion this first day ought to perhaps be about process, how we go about doing things. so I was thinking...hmmmm...crazy idea I know...anyone up for a Voting Bloc system?? <ducks and runs for cover> Errr...yeah...maybe not.

Seriously though - I'd like to suggest that we nominate one or two people who love to keep records to work as Town Scribes -- the purpose of which would be to collect voting patterns in some sort of workable chart and regularly publish this along with the vote updates. It would just be something like:

krellin suspect chain: y2k -> damian -> (v) Thucy etc....meaning I officially called out two suspects, and then voted for Thucy...

This would imply that I didn't just ask someone (damian for example) a question, but I made some sort of formal declaration of suspicion.

As for night chatter: Talking suspicions during the night seemed frowned upon, but I'm all for process discussions.

Final thought -- TIME ZONES -- Who is where? I'm US. I agree with y2k that Euro's (and beyond) shouldn't be targeted JUST because they talk at all the wrong times... :)
Slyguy270 (527 D)

Can we change our vote or are all votes final?
y2kjbk (4846 D(G))
09 May 14 UTC
Define "reasonable" though. Does one mafia kill give us enough reasonable information to lynch? Two mafia kills? It's the lynch votes that give the town information, and ultimately is how the town has to win, so the flow of information available to the town starts once the lynches start. I see no reason to want to delay that. If no one ends up arousing enough suspicion after day 1 to lynch, then so be it, but going into this day not wanting to lynch anyone is misguided in my mind.
uclabb (589 D)
09 May 14 UTC
@y2kjbk- Like I said in my post, "the main thing is to post your thoughts just before day begins so you can get your opinions out before you die." It seems pretty obvious to me this is a huge advantage. For example, last game krellin claimed knew who 4 or 5 town were and (idiotically) claimed as cop during the day. The mafia then (to my memory) killed one of those 4 or 5 confirmed town players that night. Had krellin waited until just before daybreak to post that information, then the mafia likely wouldn't have role blocked krellin that night and could have killed one of the people krellin didn't have confirmed as good, which I think would have clinched the game. That's a pretty huge difference.

y2kjbk (4846 D(G))
09 May 14 UTC
I can definitely get behind night posts that happen less than an hour before the night ends, that would be smart of the town. Any posts earlier in the night risk giving too much information to the mafia to start playing us all like fiddles.
