On the point of offsetting white privilege, I will argue that that is actually critically important to do. A large amount of white privilege comes into being simply by the examples that (white) people encounter day to day, both in real life and in cultural examples. If humans predominantly see a particular type of person associated with power or status, then that type of person gets a default assumption of having that kind of power or status. I think we can all agree that it isn't fair that I get treated better and get more deference simply because I am a tall, white, fit, middle aged male who clearly speaks as if I were educated.

Given that dynmanic in human psychology, in the long term it is important to make sure there are examples of other kinds of powerful people, not just so that white people become more likely to afford proper respect to powerful and accomplished minorities but also so that minority members see themselves as reasonably filling those roles. I will say that whatever else you might say about President Obama (and President Palmer before him), he is a very powerful role model and exemplar that will increase the plausibility of black men of status and authority in future years long after he is out of office.

Thus, to go back to our two graduates of Andover in your example, having the black student (even though absurdly privileged also) in the student body and later in a position of authority generates a substantial benefit to society in part because his white fellow students are more likely to treat black colleagues better in future and because it helps our black high school student help African Americans climb the ladder (not to mention help his own children in turn maintain their privilege). Since universities have a substantial public mission, this step is very much in accordance with the core business of universities.

It isn't about punishing anyone, it is about creating a better future world through thoughtful action.

I dont really know how the US system works, but the NAUM (National Autonomous University of Mexico) applies it's own exam, and the only data they require from you is your highschool certificate. They dont ask or research if you're part of a minority or not. Actually they dont even care of your high school califications, they only consider your score in the aplication exam, and the way they select students is pretty simple: 10 want a place in Biology, and we have only 3. John Doe got a 120 score, he's in. Sarah WE got 115, shes in. Asdf got 112, he's in. Rest of you good luck next time.

I'm not sure that taking Mexico, a country with deeply intrenched inequality and massive social problems as a result, as an example of the perfect system is going to help your cause much. That system ends up reinforcing the major problems in society, which doesn't say much for whether the universities are achieving their mission.

Keep in mind too that being rich alone will boost both grades and test scores, so you are quite likely to have students with poorer grades and test scores who are actually smarter and more motivated, but that's a whole other complex topic.

Ogion, the system is not Mexico-wide. The NAUM does it because have an autonomous state of existence, so the government educational proposes - laws doesnt really matter to them. Most of Mexico's schools and Universities are ruled by the SEP, wich is the "Secretary of Public Education", and even private schools need to use SEP's educational program (a.k.a the classes you got in a certain career, etc), the only institutions wich dont need to do it are the autonomous universities, there is one per state and the national one.

And I think it works, I have the poorest and the richest people i'v met in my life as classmates, and its actually nice because I havent ever seen an act of discrimination, ever.

Also the NAUM does 70% of Mexico's national research and all mexico's nobel prizes come from here, I mean, I know that Mexico is far from being a educational superpower but I think NAUM is doing a nice job, and in my opinion the way they select their students has to do a lot with it. And maybe the massive budget too :p

Exactly Vaddix. Acceptance into university should be based solely on academics (here in Canada they also look at "community involvement" and stuff). It's the fairest way.

I see your point about accepting the black guy over the white guy if both have identical or at least very similar abilities, but i think its unfair to accept one over the other just to create an environment where white students get to have fellow blacks that are just as smart.
