Sniff In the Bathroom Stall...
...and other forms of "alert". Yeah, so I entered the john and heard the inevitable "sniff" from the far (and favored) stall - the, "I'm in here...stay away" sniff to a fellow shitter.

Two questions: What is your preferred form of "alert" to fellow man, and what is your preferred stall?

How to Deal With Heartbreak...
So yeah, it's been a while, and I'm probably looking a lot like Conservative Man with this post, but I just went through an awful breakup and I need some help. I've never really had a father figure and I know this is pathetic, but this is the only place I've found good advice that I haven't had to figure out on my own...

Genuine suggestion that is not meant to be an insult but merely a statement of fact as I see it: maybe she left you because you're a racist, homophobic web troll who thinks white people invented civilization or something equally idiotic. Do you share those same characteristics with people in face-to-face life that make your presence online so generally unpleasant?

card - I could make some more ridiculous forum posts here....but I won't.

I actually sympathize with the kid, even though the entirety of this problem is wholly based upon the idea of two "me first - me now" generation kids who are too immature to know what they want to do next week, let alone who they want to spend their lives with, believe that they are "supposed* to be in love with someone...because hell, the media tells us by the time you are a senior in high school you are super mature, super cool and have a gorgeous trophy girl on your arm.

He won't believe any of what I said...but it is a large part of the basis for his need. it isn't just a "sexual" need...otherwise Draug's advice would suit him perfectly and he'd be happy. No...this is all based upon the idiotic idea that at 18 he actually *believes* that he is supposed to have it all figured out, and believes that he's intelligent and mature enough to actually have it figured out.

It's sad, really. If he was really in love as much as he said he was, this is going to hurt for years....my prediction....some of those first "true loves" (if that is indeed what this was) can literally cause bio-chemical changes in the brain....so it is wholly possible this will hurt for years to come, even through other girl friends.

And that's life.

Sounds like it was an actual relationship. That's refreshing to hear. Maybe she'll change her mind on her own. Otherwise, there's nothing you can do.

Errr....."actual relationship". no. it wasn't. it was all of 4 months, I think this said, and they "fell in love" immediately. Yeah....

I'm certain he *thinks* it was an actual relationship, but seeing as how neither one actually knew jack shit about each other, it was much more hope and fantasy than it was a relatiosnhip. See, "relationship" actually implies you *know something* about each other. From what I can tell, the most KA knows about chicky-poo is that she wanted to be love. Now, while this may seem to be great depth of knowledge <cough cough...bullshit> it is not. a relationship is, you know, when you go our and one starts to say something and the other finishes the sentence. It's when you do some little thing for the other person that they really appreciate, that nobody else knew about.

The most I hear is that two high school students had a lot of raging hormones and felt the need to fulfill some requirement to be hooked up, and that's about it.

Easy come....easy go. There was no building up in this relationship....she didn't know who he was...she said "I love you" because she was pressured to, by society, and by him. then she got to know a little bit more about him and realized what a stupid thing that was to say. Then she realized that he's kind of a geek, and she hates his symphony, because she's really kind of more in to the hip hop scene, and...yeah...well...it was kind of fun, but this wasn't what I signed up for.

bo - it isn't reassuring to tell him something was that wasn't. *I'm* trying to be reassuring by telling him this never was a relationship to begin with. Losing a misunderstanding is much easier to come to grips with that "losing a relationship"

"she said she was first attracted to me because she was attracted to the idea of someone liking her."

This is a good sign and it means you two are soulmates. She will eventually come back to you, but she is just testing to see if you really love her enough to chase after her. I'd recommend following her home and singing poetry through her bedroom window. Girls love that stuff, it's really thoughtful.

FWIW, Atom,

I'd say the number one rule of break ups is that they are a lot like a bad flu. They are horrible and painful and sometimes you just have to wait it out until it gets better. Sucks, but there it is.

As a guy on his second marriage and countless break ups before that, I am going to suggest you try to remind yourself that you're a pretty awesome guy (you play here right? ;). Don't ever forget it. If you aren't convinced (and no one is in high school), make a list of the things about you that are awesome. Ask a friend to ask your friends to make a list. (I did this for my wife's birthday. Seriously awesome birthday present resulted).

In the end, you'l grow, you'll change, and if you keep balanced you'll find someone who will fit with you in ways you never dreamed possible. This girl is just practice so you can develop a little depth before you meet the one who is right for you.

And don't be shy about coming back when feeling glum. You will, but that's what buddies are for.

Dear Atom,

My heart goes out to you for this break-up. The lowest emotions I ever felt in my life came in the months after a serious girlfriend dumped me. I re-learned the meaning of despair and though I would never be the same.

Indeed, I never was. But you know what, I am better now than I was before. I know how to deal with emotional pain and rejection, loneliness, and sexual depression. I also know what's important in life and what I want in a life partner.

Do the best you can to restrain yourself from doing anything rash, and take care of your mental health and physical health. The rest only time can heal. Soldier on and chin up. Don't base your whole concept of self-worth or the meaning of life around women or romantic relationships: go bigger. Serve your fellow man and find true fulfillment.

Good luck and PM me if you want to talk. Maybe now is a good time to write a song, but not one that dwells on the pain of your break up. Transcend it.

Genetic Engineering for monkeys, *by* monkeys?
People worry about technology taking over the planet. But now we've got cut-and-paste monkey DNA. If they make this easy enough for the monkeys to do themselves, we might find that they're not squeamish about global domination via genetically engineered super monkeys. http://www.theguardian.com/science/2014/jan/30/genetically-modified-monkeys-cut-and-paste-dna-alzheimers-parkinsons

Scientific basis for communism
I can't find any evidence of a scientific basis for communism. Is it the case that communism requires historical determinism to be true though? Communism only seems to consider "false consciousness", a view that history is static, "class consciousness", a view that history is dynamic and deterministic, but makes no room for history being dynamic and unpredictable.
