I have a player that will be out for a month of the tournament, but would like to continue after that. Would anyone be willing to take over his games until he comes back? Otherwise I will have to replace him. Let me know, here or email me to [email protected]. Thanks!

Seeing suspicious behavior in game title 'Anone game' gameID=54780 looks like a Russian/German alliance in an anonymous game with no messaging... can the mods check this out and reassure me. Thanks.

longest games
Hi, I'm a player in Wittlesbach Interruption and we are on Spring 1916. Since I've started playing online Diplomacy I've noticed most games end around 1907 give or take a year. We're at 1916 and the leading player has only 11 SC. We are also on our third leader in this game. Anyone else play a very long game?

Regular reports of cheaters in games posted on the forum
Here's a little bit of advice for all the new / inexperienced guys out there. If you do your homework before or at the start of a game, you don't have to worry about joining these types of games becoming a problem. What I mean by "doing your homework" is to check the profile of the guys with whom you're playing (so long as it isn't an anonymous game). Here are some things on what to look for:

did the zero SC survive get fixed or do you have to have a unit to get it?
I just took a nations last SC for the win, but they got eliminated. I physically took it in the spring forcing a disband so I'm guessing you either have to have a unit to get the survive or the problem was fixed.

Gunboat Tournament?

I was going to do it by round.

Also it had occurred to me it would probably be fairer if you *never* got the same country twice, but thems the rules
trip (696 D(B))
22 Dec 10 UTC
This is for the next tourney guys. That's why it's under the heading, "Info for Future Gunboat Tournaments". The randomizing will be for each round, not the entire tourney. It impossible not to draw the same country when finalists will play 9 games.
trip (696 D(B))
22 Dec 10 UTC
Actually, next tourney will be four games per round.
gramilaj (100 D)
22 Dec 10 UTC
I would lobby for the next round of the current tourney being four games, three games encourages too much weird play, you feel like you have too a strong handle on what your standing will be. Cool for press games, weird for gunboat. But I am loving it so far.

No, but I still think it's a good idea.

22 Dec 10 UTC
I don't want to make changes to this tourney if possible. I know its not perfect. Going from idea to starting games in under three days may have something to do with that though. I simply hope that most are enjoying it and will be back for the next one, which should be much better thought out and organized.
Frank (100 D)
22 Dec 10 UTC
Trip, it's been a great tourney so far. High quality gunboat games are hard to find and all of the games in the tournament have been of great quality so far, with great competition. I also honestly couldn't think of a better format; three games per round and three rounds has a nice symmetry to it. Thanks for organizing this, we all appreciate the work!

I've played absolutely terribly this tournament. Sorry, guys.
gramilaj (100 D)
22 Dec 10 UTC
Actually, looking at the scoring system more closely, it's not the problem I thought it was. With some type of PPSC, I think the three game system would be devestating, I would be constantly tempted to throw solos.
trip (696 D(B))
22 Dec 10 UTC
@ gram: i think four games per round and the top 2 players automatically advancing will keep throwing solos to a minumum, if not cut it out completely.

concerning the re-randomizing to avoid drawing doubles in each round: my goal is to have the most well rounded player win. with this set up, the odds are good that players in the finals will have drawn every country during the tourney. while this does curb the randomness a bit, it doesn't cut it out completely. a player could still draw the same four countries each round.
trip (696 D(B))
22 Dec 10 UTC
think i may have stumbled onto a scoring system that is based on result, and accounts for centers:

24 pt must
24 for solo
24/n for draws

centers are worth .5 for solo
or for draws, 1/n squared

so

solo = 33pts

2wd = 16.250

3wd
17c = 9.887
1c = 8.111

4wd
17c = 7.071
1c = 6.063

5wd
17c = 5.480
1c = 5.200

6wd
17c = 4.476
1c = 4.028

7wd
17c = 3.770
1c = 3.450

!!!!!!!!! THIS IS NOT FOR CURRENT TOURNAMENT !!!!!!!!!!!

once again, thoughts are welcome

Why .5 for a solo? The same formula can be used and a solo would be worth 42, which I think is fair.
trip (696 D(B))
22 Dec 10 UTC
thats a good question, JP. i guess maxing the points for a solo makes sense.
trip (696 D(B))
23 Dec 10 UTC
is there another formula that would make a solo worth .5, and keep the other values the same?

i really don't like solos getting over 4x more points than a 17c 3wd, particularly with how scarce 2wds are in gunboats. i think .5 & 33 is fair too, and it keeps the other three games from becoming completely meaningless. it's still a longshot to miss the cut with just a solo, but it won't take seven other players in the bracket soloing and getting another result.
JesusPetry (258 D)
23 Dec 10 UTC
It seems a bit convoluted, but how about a center being worth 1/(2n+(3n-3)) ?

solo = 33

2wd = 14,42857143

3wd
17c = 9,416666667
1c = 8,083333333

4wd
17c = 7
1c = 6,058823529

5wd
17c = 5,572727273
1c = 4,845454545

6wd
17c = 4,62962963
1c = 4,037037037

7wd
17c = 3,959821429
1c = 3,459821429
JesusPetry (258 D)
23 Dec 10 UTC
It can obviously be simplified to 1/(5n-3), the "3n-3" bit was meant to show that this part of the expression becomes zero in case of a solo, therefore 1/2n = .5 .

Now that was a fun game! I worked from the start with Germany, but we got severly bogged down in France, so he stabbed me. He didn't have the fleets to follow through though, so I was able to entirely hold him off except for the initial stab (1 dot stab, though I wouldn't say it was terrible, and it was precipitated by a misorder of Hol-Edi). Add to that France destroying their one fleet and holding on to their armies made it a realiatively safe game for me. It was just the kind I like to play as England, you can stab everyone, and no one can do anything back. I had gained Portugal ealy on, so by the time Turkey started knocking on Iberia I had MAO signed and sealed. There was a heart stopping moment where I misordered a support and Turkey got Spain, but after a year of timid play, believeing I would take Brest (which I would have if Spain not gone down) France stepped up and locked him out of Mar.

I thought this game was never going to end, so I occupyed myself by taking as many German canters as I could without breaking the stalemate line. Had it continued, I would have grabbed Kiel, then buildt another fleet and started making a play for Spain. GG all!

@gramilaj: your tactics seemed very strange to me. Eating Germany and me (France) while we were holding of Turkey. Your mistake when you handed Spain to Turkey almost resulted in my retreat from Marseiles and letting Turkey to solo. If you would jump on Brest I would certainly do that :-).
But congrats to all (but me) for good game. You and Bilbo had me from the first move and I was all the time in defense, just trying to survive, mostly repeating same boring orders and admiring the way you were killing figle, Kingdoid and Frank :-D
