GNU/Linux is a widely used family of operating systems. It is free and open source and hence has spawned hundreds (really thousands if counting many esoteric examples) of derivative variants. It is the product of combining the software developed by the GNU project with the Linux operating system kernel created by Linus Torvalds.

On 25 August 1991, Torvalds announced on a newsgroup that he had been working on building an operating system from scratch. This announcement generated a lot of interest and in turn many people ended up contributing to this project making it a huge success.

right, it's hard to pinpoint the "creation" since it has been a constantly evolving software project. it started sometime in april of 1991 and the earliest releases came out later in 1991 after the announcement.

however, i suppose 25 august 1991 would be a popular date to cite since it was the date that Torvalds made a short, humble, unassuming announcement that wound up starting something much larger than anyone would anticipate.
