On Social Contracts and Their Existence
It's late where I am and I was thinking about this post:
http://trolleyproblem.blogspot.com/2012/02/why-social-contract-arguments-are.html

So what do y'all think about the social contract and the legitimacy of government? Does it exist? If so to what extent? Please discuss.

Teacon asked you to explain your position and you refused so here goes.

Teacon this guy does a pretty good job. It amounts to some differences between our household debt and national debt:
1) Governments don’t die. So loaning to them is pretty safe (especially when they represent the largest economy in the world). So they get good interest rates.
2) If you have a mortgage, your income to debt ratio is WAY worse than that of the Federal government. (100K a year owning a 300K house is a 300% income to debt ration where the USA has about 80%)
3) The government can print their own money. Hyper-inflation can be tricky there (a la Germany 1930’s ish)
4) Most of the debt isn’t foreign debt (Yeah we’re into China for about a trillion and a half no big deal, right? They love us and all.)
So, yeah. We aren’t going to collapse from the weight of the debt, just yet. However, it is something to bear in mind when discussing accountability of politicians (and lack thereof). It get’s hard to fathom just how big a sum the debt is (and yes, it is $19.5 trillion not $18 trillion, but hey what’s a trillion and a half? That’s not off by much, is it?)
http://www.usdebtclock.org/

National debt can be a good thing, but it can also run out of control. The trend of every administration up to this point when it reached the debt to income ration that it is now has been to put the brakes on and start paying it down. Obama has slowed it a little as an overall percentage, but done nothing to reign in the out of control spending. Advocates of both parties will point out how the other party is at fault.

They are BOTH right.
Sorry I forgot my citation:

That's who "this guy" is.

The only difference between $19.5 trillion and $18 trillion is the digitized number on the screen. There is literally not that much money in existence.

"but he has sharply decreased the national deficit to *below* the $400-500 billion range that Bush held it in during his first term. Last year, the deficit was $327 billion, down from over $1 trillion in 2014."

Which is still spending more than you take in.

Which is ultimately unsustainable.

Which is why our leadership should be more accountable to us.

Donald Trump is absolutely a law and order candidate.

http://www.npr.org/2016/09/22/494265972/the-issues-how-clinton-and-trump-come-down-on-law-and-order

Trump will come down on illegal immigration, drug trafficking, and inner city crime. He will support our police officers and obtain justice for victims rather than criminals. He will end the Black Lives Matter and La Raza riots, which Hillary certainly won't do since she actively courts their support.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
02 Oct 16 UTC
I'm well aware that it's unsustainable, but my point is that he inherited that massive upwards spending trend in the last couple of years from Bush and turned it into a decreasing trend. You can't ask for a whole lot more than those numbers I just gave you. You just said that the difference between $19.5 trillion and $18 trillion is a whopping $1.5 trillion - ironically, that's the difference in the deficit between 2009 and 2015 as well. That's a lot of imaginary dough that Obama has cut some the deficit.
Now bo,

You and I are in the same position. Our vote is going for Trump electorally anyway. Ogion and BB lose nothing at all by us voting third party. Their darlin' Hillary is going to the White House. Georgia and Indiana are NOT swing states.

As you said, Why not vote some of these other parties up and make an investment in change in the future? Get some funding and media time for these people. The Republicans were a third party at one point. Heck, it was Tories vs.Whigs if you go back far enough. The two party system is a reality because people vote for those two parties.

If you'd like for the Green Party to have some more clout, you have to trust them with your vote.

Coming down on illegal immigration isn't going to stop illegal immigration. People that come into this country risking life and limb, knowing that they're going to be working in inhumane conditions for Chinese sweatshop wages without the opportunity to leave and do it all anyway aren't gonna be stopped by the threat of deportation. Likewise, coming down on drug trafficking isn't going to stop drug trafficking. I don't know how in the world the POTUS expects to have major influence over "inner city crime." There's a lot of inner cities. Trump has no plan; he's just throwing around buzzwords so that idiots like you (remember, if you pay your taxes, you're not smart) rally around him. He'll prance around doing whatever Mike Pence says, and that's gonna be centered on Christianizing the country and occasionally dealing with actual problems, albeit not very effectively. That's what he did in Indiana.

Manufacturing is the only way to bring down the deficit. Our trade deficit is so large because other countries are selling us products, while we sell them services. There simply aren't that many services that other countries need from us.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

I wouldn't trust Jill Stein with $20, CA. Of all the somewhat major political parties, the Green Party should advance funding for science across the board, including vaccination and GMO research, as far as they possibly can. She won't do that. The only things the Green Party does right are acknowledging climate change and working to lessen massive income inequality. As it happens, those are two massively important things that go hand in hand, but other than that, they're about as useful as PETA.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

Keeping manufacturing and "low-level" jobs would be great. Paying people pennies on the dollar to do those jobs isn't great. Rather than finding a better solution than being dragged down to the level of immoral employment slavery, Trump simply supports bringing that here. That's not good.
"You can't ask for a whole lot more than those numbers I just gave you. You just said that the difference between $19.5 trillion and $18 trillion is a whopping $1.5 trillion - ironically, that's the difference in the deficit between 2009 and 2015 as well."

Which is why I am not against any particular politician (although I do maintain that Trump and Hillary both suck as choices). I am against a two party system which is increasingly factional. After the elections, these people are supposed to be working together. They aren't, and both sides blame the other. Putting more political parties in means two things:

1) Coalitions that would have to work together to gain a majority.

2) New parties courting their own power base (ie. greater accountability to their constituents) That is NOBODY would be able to tell you "Vote for MY candidate because he isn't as bad as THEIR candidate."
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
02 Oct 16 UTC
Accountability beings with voting local. Nobody cares about local elections. It's a problem. Strange as it is, the President of the United States of America is going to have a lot less of an influence over my life in the next eight years than the mayor of whatever towns I live in will. For parents, the people on the school board will do a lot more to fuck up your life than Trump or Clinton will. You just don't see these people on the front page of the paper unless they yank out their Anthony Weiner, so you don't care about them. Neither does anyone else.

Coalition government is great, but we already have a weird method of doing that. Bernie Sanders just did it. Donald Trump is doing it. People that aren't in these major parties come in, blast the room with their ideas, and, until Donald Trump, get sand thrown in their faces on the way out the door. That has been happening for forever. The only difference now is how widespread the information about these alien invaders to the political process can be, so it doesn't take massive public awareness to learn about their existence even when the parties try and shut them down.

Begins, not beings. The fuck is with autocorrect.
"The only things the Green Party does right are acknowledging climate change and working to lessen massive income inequality. As it happens, those are two massively important things that go hand in hand"

Sure, but if we can bring more voices into the discussion (especially ones that are growing and interested in building their base) it becomes less important for you to agree with everything on the ticket. It also becomes easier for you to influence the party simply because it is smaller and more interested in keeping you with them.
Ah well, it is getting late my friend. Good talking to you. Back to work this week so I will probably be doing my disappearing act again. Ogion will no doubt be pleased by that ;-)

Dearest Leon... Your bromance with Daffy Donald Trump is preventing you from seeing the blindingly obvious.. He talks a lot of talk, but cannot walk the walk..that is he has zero chance of actually delivering on his extravagant promises.. Did you ever read the cautionary tale "The Emperor's New Clothes" and understand the message it contains about the willingness of people to delude themselves and stupidly believe the falsehoods of a "con artist" ?
Because you're living the delusion dearest Leon in the way you've embraced the Daffy Demagogue Donald Trump

Obama has done nothing to control spending? You mean except reducing the deficit by over 70%. Sheesh. You get you own opinions. You don't get you own facts.

And I guess Leon is salivating at the increased prominence white supremacists would have under a Trump administration because he sees nothing wrong with shooting black people. Frankly, people like Leon belong behind bars or worse.
leon1122 (190 D)
02 Oct 16 UTC
TrPrado, that's not what I said.

bo_sox, it's called being principled.

Ogion, I don't support shooting black people exclusively. I support shooting all criminals who try to avoid arrest or to attack officers. People like Ogion belong behind bars or worse for treason because they undermine the Constitution and want to eliminate the first amendment.
leon1122 (190 D)

There was so much doom and gloom about the government shutting down. In the end, there was no significant impact on everyday life.
MajorMitchell (1874 D)
02 Oct 16 UTC
Well I just love it when Conservatives whine about Obama "failing to deliver" on reforms..given how cooperative the Republicans weren't... Clearly engaging in bloody-minded opposition to reasonable policy reform, then whining about the lack of reform

Opposition is a sign of a healthy republic, so long as the different sides are willing to cooperate. Your statements, leon, display a major part of what has gone wrong in this country.

Ditto Ogion, saying Leon should be behind bars. You're both terrible.
Ogion (3882 D)

Actually, opposition is one thing. Advocating murderous racism is entirely different. "Ending" a legitimate protest again police violence (presumably through repression and greater violence crosses the line. We have tolerated the Klan and the like for far too long. Trust a conservative like yourself, TrPrado, to fail to see what is wrong with racism. Disgusting.
TrPrado (461 D)
02 Oct 16 UTC
Lol you think I'm conservative? Leon thinks I'm super liberal, so that's funny. I've never been accused of being conservative before :)

So, one feature that would be amazing for new players is a "test the waters" mode for diplomacy.

Something that new players could try to see if they like Diplomacy, without the commitment to a four month game checking the site every day, or setting aside five hours for a live game. Maybe it's a short game up until 1902? I have no idea. Ideas?
