longest games
Hi, I'm a player in Wittlesbach Interruption and we are on Spring 1916. Since I've started playing online Diplomacy I've noticed most games end around 1907 give or take a year. We're at 1916 and the leading player has only 11 SC. We are also on our third leader in this game. Anyone else play a very long game?

Regular reports of cheaters in games posted on the forum
Here's a little bit of advice for all the new / inexperienced guys out there. If you do your homework before or at the start of a game, you don't have to worry about joining these types of games becoming a problem. What I mean by "doing your homework" is to check the profile of the guys with whom you're playing (so long as it isn't an anonymous game). Here are some things on what to look for:

did the zero SC survive get fixed or do you have to have a unit to get it?
I just took a nations last SC for the win, but they got eliminated. I physically took it in the spring forcing a disband so I'm guessing you either have to have a unit to get the survive or the problem was fixed.

Great games everyone. Although gameID=41953 was my favorite. I wasnt sure if Turkey really thought they could solo or if they were just trying to get SCs as a potential tie-breaker.

I thought I goofed when I moved Edi to Norwegian. I was sending him south, but afterwards realized it may have sent the wrong message to Germany since I could have moved to clyde to accomplish the same.

I believe all the top three of Group D are through too, since we can't be lower than fourth place anymore and we have more points than TBroadley, who has to hope that The Czech is out of the draw in Game 1 and that it doesn't end in a solo or a 2-way.
IKE (3845 D)

Jan 3 works for me. Are we going to do 24hrs? Guess I will have to join some more games until the good stuff starts.
JesusPetry (258 D)
15 Dec 10 UTC
I believe 36h can be better if we follow the pace that all groups except B have set. We can avoid short unnecessary pauses, that could arise with 24h, especially on weekends.
Greed I think 36 hours worked fine.

About the game we finished - very well played JP. I was worried the western bunch wasn't going to be able to stop you in Iberia. More importantly, I really appreciate you waiting so late before the stab. Austria put up quite the fight including diving straight for Warsaw. If you had attacked me before I had dealt with that mess I probably wouldn't have last to the draw. After I was slowed down so much I knew I had not chance for the solo so I had to balance between you and Germany the two big powers. I also have to thank germany because I think he could have eaten me up without sacrificing the stalemate line. Very nerve-wracking game but very fun too. Congrats again to the other three in the draw.
Hmm "Greed" should read "Agreed"

For some reason, I was thinking A and D were supposed to merge for round 2. Is this incorrect?
JesusPetry (258 D)
15 Dec 10 UTC
Well, I had timed the stab to after I had secured Tunis, since I had missed a win with Turkey before for jumping the gun. I was helped by the fact that you moved back to prevent a stab exactly one turn before it, so you were left mispositioned against Germany and having to move forward again while I was setting up for taking 2 SCs for sure. Then Troodonte and you worked very well to contain my advance, while on the other end I failed to take a firm control of MAO (that was more important than grabbing centers at that point) and my progress was blocked. But I can take some pride for making my best play ever in a diplomacy game: that support hold to Trieste in Autumn 1903 that allowed me to control the Ionian Sea from the next turn on.

The names of the groups got a little mixed up, Barn. If you go back to page 4, you'll see that A/B is 1s vs 4s, and C/D is 2s vs 3s. That will get cleaned up next time.

Considering that Group B may not finish until Feb, there's no reason to rush the second round of C/D. Even if that wasn't the case, I'd want to keep the 36hrs anyway, for the reason JP gave. Depending on how late B finishes, I'll let the players that advance on that side of the bracket decide if they want to shorten the phase length, but it will have to be a unanimous decision.

GT Group D, Game 3/3
gameID=41857

What a great game!!!
Congratulations all.

Lando... as a matter of fact you moved back leaving Ukraine when I was thinking about attacking you to take you out of the draw, taking warsaw and STP and allowing Turkey to take moscow... but with you in stp it was too risky.

The key phase of this game, imo, was when Me (Germany) and Russia started fighting, allowing Turkey to stab Russia. It made me stop attacking France and England that were weak and I had to move some units to the north to make russia understand that he had no chance that way, give support hold to him so that he could concentrate on stopping the turkish solo.

Meanwhile the Med was already full of yellow fleets so I couldn't just go for France or England that had only Iberia.
When Turkey got the MAO I got scared.

I was ready to take the 5 way draw, but as Turkey conquered Spain England was a 1 center (Portugal) power.... he had to go. Sorry anlari but it had to be that way.

And the fact that I'm Portuguese and finalized the game with a convoy from Belgium to Portugal, supported by Turkey...!!! It was just Beautiful!

i have never set played as frustrating a set of game as i am playing now in group B. they are all good games of good quality play, but literally every single phase (builds and retreats included) is drawn out to the full 36 hours. and it is not just one player either....hopefully everyone has good explanations for their behaviour once the games are done.

Group B game 3 is done. gameID=41848

I was Germany, and maybe drew a little early, but felt a little out in the cold being the only one without a draw vote in the pool for a whopping two year (not counting Italy, on the verge of elimination). Also, with Turkey helping France out for the time being I couldn't get a sucessful stab going. He was probably waiting for me to stab, and I was expecting him to stab a little. I would have stabbed this year, but France moved to Picardy, which meant I couldn't grab Belgium and was probably facing another fleet Brest. I was suprised and dismayed Turkey built so many armies and so few fleets, which is part of why I drew early, I only could see myself picking up Rumania in the next year, and I think I had more to lose than to gain from this point on.
gramilaj (100 D)
17 Dec 10 UTC
And @Frank, it seems like we have some bad sport losers, whenever someone gets down to 3 units, they decide to drag it out for the rest of us.
Frank (100 D)
17 Dec 10 UTC
I was France and was surprised you chose to draw. Especially because there were three small powers that would have been eliminated in a year or two. Which could make a big difference with this type of tournament scoring. In fact, I really only pressed draw to communicate friendship with Turkey; I never actually expected you to draw.

Further, even though I was preparing for you to stab, you still could've picked up Belgium whenever you wanted and you could have driven me out of the British Isles in a year or so, I think. Though I'm not sure you you could have soloed, (Turkey was very well positioned against you) you definitely weren't at any risk of losing centres, so continuing could only have been to your advantage, right?. Having said all that, good game and thanks for always finalizing!
Frank (100 D)
17 Dec 10 UTC
Also, I'm still getting used to tournament dynamics , since I've never played one before. Drawing early in one game could be a function of your positioning in the other two, i guess.
gramilaj (100 D)
17 Dec 10 UTC
With 2v2 fleets in the Med, and Turkey barely bottled up in the Ionian and faking not trying for Tunis I felt like I couldn't risk it. Basically, I thought Turkey was being crafy, I stab you(and where else can I go?), he attacks me, and with a fleet in the Black Sea he picks up Sev, Rum and Bul, eventually Vie and he is board top, which I didn't want to give up, then he picks up Tunis and from there probably makes his way into Italian centers. I couldn't spare Munich, and army Berlin is a year and a half away from helping against Turkey, and I'm in more trouble than the two centers is worth. I also didn't expect the move to Brest.

I knew you didn't expect me to draw, but I also knew that in a year that draw vote was probably going to be withdrawn by Turkey, so I took the top opportunity while I could. There was no way I was soloing with Turkey softpeddaling the Med the way he was, freeing up your fleets, but I was risking him soloing if he eventually picked up the vital Tunis. It was the self bounce in Tyr and move to Spain that clinched the decision for me(which meant I can't slip into MAO and almost def can't solo). GG all.

Congratulations to gramilaj, Frank and figle. Now I see that WTA gunboat should be played a bit differently that I had thought.
Thanks for drawing :-), all of you. Playing Austria after letting Italy stab me was depressing.
@gramilaj I have always finalize my moves so I guess your remark is not meant for me. About the game... I was planning to disband Venice and gamble that Silesia would reach one of yours SC. Stupid now when I look back.

Anyone interested in a consolation bracket? That is assuming I make it into 8 - 14. :)
You could do two consolation games with everyone not in the semis. Then you could follow the same procedure and have a the top 7 of those two play for spots 8-14. Although, theres the chance not everyone would want to take part.

Eh, I was England.... Wasn't fun for me, I managed to piss Germany, France, and Russia off somehow (can't say it wasn't partly their fault, though). Surprised that the draw was voted for, and very glad. Luckily Germany made a mistake with his convoy to Edinburgh, and allowed me to stay alive an extra turn.

@ anlari: on page 13 there is a scoring system, that i'm considering for the next tourney, that gives points for draws and centers.

points for draws are rewarded similarly, except that its a 24pt must instead of 12. points for centers depend on the outcome, with 1pt per center for a solo, .500 for a two-way, .333 for a three-way, .250 for a four-way, ect.

i'm not the greatest with stats, or math in general tbh, so i was hoping to get some feedback about it's pros and cons. let me know what you think. also, if anyone knows of a scoring system that would more accurately reflect overall performance, i'm all ears.

@ troodonte: i agree, unless i know i'll get to seventeen before my ally.
