I forget exactly what is is, but basically, the French ambassador wanted King Wilhelm I to guarantee he would not present a member of his family for the Spanish throne, and Bismark allowed it to get out (read made sure it got out), and that caused the Franco-Prussian war to start a few days later

@patizcool: Correct! The Ems Telegram was a subtle edit of a letter from a French ambassador; a response edited to seem insulting to the king of France finally provoked France into attacking. This was actually von Bismarck's goal, as he had previously demanded defensive treaties between Prussia and all the other German states in case of a French attack. Since the French technically were the agressors in this situation, cooperation with Bismarck's plans was guaranteed and he was soon able to unify Germany.

Isabella ruled Casille. Ferdinand ruled Aragon. The two realms remained technically independent of each other (thought they happened to be ruled by the same person) until I believe the 18th century.
