On Social Contracts and Their Existence
It's late where I am and I was thinking about this post:
http://trolleyproblem.blogspot.com/2012/02/why-social-contract-arguments-are.html

So what do y'all think about the social contract and the legitimacy of government? Does it exist? If so to what extent? Please discuss.

Yep. Pretty sure the Emancipation Proclamation was the uhh 1860's

@Teacon yea theres a radical sect of BLM calling for the US SOUTH to be an all black nation.

"The two major parties have lost the desire to do what's best for the nation as a whole and cater to special interests with big bank accounts?"
They care more about upholding their own continued power than doing what they genuinely believe is best for the country :)
TrPrado (461 D)

The Emancipation Proclemation was by the Republicans. I thought you'd be going for the Civil Rights Act.

I am aware of Who drafted the proclamation.... hence why I said Democrats were on the WRONG side of segregation until after the 1860's...
brainbomb (290 D)

Segregation didnt end with the civil rights act. We still sent disproportionate numbers of Black men to die in Vietnam.
brainbomb (290 D)
01 Oct 16 UTC
Our Prisons are still packed with disproportionate numbers of Black Men too. That is a problem for both political parties to solve. Who is more likely to try?
TrPrado (461 D)
01 Oct 16 UTC
That was when the Democrats started sorting that out, was my point.
teacon7 (306 D)

@bb - wow I hadn't heard of that one. I read articles about radical^2 BLM activists calling for segregation on campuses, and in some blocs of public housing as well. The entire US south is new to me. Either way, it's amusing and a bit sad to hear calls for segregation again.

@Prado - That's not too far of a stretch, I think. Institutions seek self-preservation, and those making money in those institutions can easily lose sight of their ideals in pursuit of $ or institutional preservation. Kinda makes you wonder how organizations survive where people take voluntary pay cuts or "vows of poverty" and the like...
you'd do better looking for non-racist conservatives than by looking for racist Democrats.

Like Powell and Rice?

Also 1.2 trillion a year added to the national debt is not making rich companies foot the bill.

"I am aware of Who drafted the proclamation.... hence why I said Democrats were on the WRONG side of segregation until after the 1860's.."

You mean 1960's, right?
TrPrado (461 D)

Well both parties are trying to get the prison thing sorted out. As much as I hate Mary Fallin, she did fine by inviting Obama to Oklahoma to discuss how to solve that issue.

"That is a problem for both political parties to solve."

Exactly and with an African-American President and supermajority in Congress, which party didn't solve it. or try really?

We need additional parties to make these two power-houses listen to the rest of us.

I'm pretty sure the word "racist" has a couple different meanings, and that ought to be teased out before constructive conversation on the topic can continue. I've been called racist simply for being white. And male. I was called racist again when I questioned the operative definition of the term. So before anyone starts generalizing ad hominem about how racist and xenophobic all republicans are, for the sake of honesty we should all define the term.

Look at the cute little neo-cons trying to hype up Eisenhower suddenly. Did yall finally give up on Reagan?

CA you seem to be of the impression that a supermajority is capable of ending all segregation, stabilizing a collapsing housing, banking, auto industry....

AND end 2 wars or begin to end them... And pass a healthcare reform. All in 2 years. Wow. Remind me what have Republicans accoplished in other 6 yrs?
No, I have the impression that they wouldn't make things worse. I notice you wanted to deflect attention away from 1.2 trillion added to the national debt each year not really being reflective of making the companies foot the bill?

As Ogion tried to say yesterday "That number doesn't mean nothing! It's gotta be a PERCENTAGE of blah blah blah"

Yeah I looked that percentage up. It's about where it was during WWII and THEY (the Dems and republicans of the time) were really quick to start paying it off. THe public debt to GDP ratio is very high.

That is a result of two parties that are NOT looking at the bottom line.
You think those 2 wars are over? Really? You've forgotten what peace time looks like haven't you?
brainbomb (290 D)
01 Oct 16 UTC
Well we're a far cry from the 100,000 troops in baghdad bullshit we were at.
"Wow. Remind me what have Republicans accoplished in other 6 yrs? "

You mean without the presidency or a supermajority?

You cute little liberal, You seem to think I'm a conservative. Not just a citizen who is looking for a way to have a voice in his government. Additional parties will help break the concentration of power in the hands of these two goliaths that have a stranglehold on our spending.

Both parties had an eight year presidency that doubled the debt. Neither deserves my vote.
"Well we're a far cry from the 100,000 troops in baghdad bullshit we were at. "

Yeah but after 16 years we aren't quite over this one are we? WWI two years (our involvement) WWII (four years our involvement). But this on keeps on going and going and going....

Israel is a terror nation essentially. With nukes
"Im not wild about fiscal respinsibility but across the board cuts and raising taxes is the best you can do."

No it isn't, that's why I am not a Republican. (You seem to keep forgetting that)
"Cutting the military would help."

Now you're talking.

"get our bases out of the middle east and africa"

sure.

"Israel is a terror nation essentially. With nukes "

historically they have been, but I am more for building bridges than burning them.
But you are sounding dangerously isolationist there?

Look all I am saying is that my government cannot go on spending the way it has been. That's internal entitlements and external ones.

Feature discussion: newbie diplomacy
So, one feature that would be amazing for new players is a "test the waters" mode for diplomacy.

Something that new players could try to see if they like Diplomacy, without the commitment to a four month game checking the site every day, or setting aside five hours for a live game. Maybe it's a short game up until 1902? I have no idea. Ideas?

How do people communicate in Gunboat?
I'm playing in a couple gunboat games, and it seems like other players are working well together, with regards to support and such. I trust they are not messaging each other, and so I would like to know how they figure out what the other players are going to do.
