Nixon
Yesterday, i rewatched "Nixon", film by Oliver Stone. He seems a tormented person. He lived beneath the Kennedy's shadow. If his government had merits because the approach with China and URSS, his conduction the conflict in Vietnam and his use of the state apparatus, for example, in Watergate, bring him very demerits. Finally, as J Edgar Hoover, is a character that deserves to be much analyzed.

50CC live game club
The 50CC live games club provides Gamestarts for regular and gunboat Diplomacy. It aims to make games which don’t suffer from dropouts. Everyone is welcome! PLAYERS WHO DROP OUT AT ANY STAGE OF A GAME WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO PLAY AGAIN!

Ive seen it typically done in a press game, a pre-stab move to leave your units in position while your erstwhile ally advances, so that you can cut in behind all the while claiming you didnt get your moves in on time (live game/5 min deadlines required). Also, makes the players around you think you might CD, so they may leave themselves more exposed to you. Other reasons include fear of a stab, so wanting to stay in place but not actively defending so as to build mistrust. There are a variety of reasons, these are just off the top of my head. And its not always (or even frequently) a good tactic, just that the potential tactical move is there, and so it should not be a basis for punishment.

in 1903, I had promised E/G to move sweden to finland, plus I had alliances with both T and I - up till now, I had made it without breaking any promises, but at least in the south, I had to make a choise, and up north, I really didnt want to back off too much, so I intentionally missed the phase, told them some white lie, and delayed my choise of alliances - the overall outcome wasnt great, but the specific move was, since I really didnt have much to lose, the only center I could lose was rum, and that required T/I to make some sort of peace agreement.
P-man (494 D)
30 Nov 11 UTC
eh, it seems like all of those can be done by moving some but not all units, or simply entering orders with 10 seconds left on the clock...

Thats the new game. PM for the password.

@Talisker: Your last two games have been CDs, and you have a high (>10%) resign rate, which does not accurately reflect the extent to which you resign (the second-most-recent game in your history). I am not one to exclude people, but since the point of the club is to exclude CDs, I would like to provide the other players some assurances. I would ask you to publically affirm here that you will not resign before sending you the password.
Talisker (0 DX)
30 Nov 11 UTC
Actually, I resigned from a number of ongoing games I had earlier this year when I had to go into hospital. I would assure not to resign from your game but I'm happy to sit out if you think other people deserve a place more than me.

Ok thanks. What other rules are there?
virtuslatin (130 D)
30 Nov 11 UTC
One companion rule: A CD by any country that holds a center, at any time in the game, requires a draw vote, regardless of stage of the game, etc. That way the CD country can be revealed and banned, and the CD does not affect the game.

A CD by a one centre player requires the game to end even if the win is locked elsewhere on the board?
MadMarx (36299 D(G))
30 Nov 11 UTC
Again, my comments are not even close to fully informed, but I view CDs and NMRs as easily the biggest problem on this site, trying a way to avoid that as much as possible is a worthwhile venture, and even if not perfect from the start (which few things are), I'd expect it to evolve into something really cool for all involved.

That said, there is clearly something to be said for intentional NMRs. For every rule there is an exception, and policing such things sounds like a difficult job, so good luck with all that! Unintentional NMRs really screw up a game, big time, but again, not sure how you figure that stuff out, suppose you just ask (novel idea), but it all takes time and energy... and here I go rambling, must run, good luck with all this!
MadMarx (36299 D(G))
30 Nov 11 UTC
Geo, that's another good point, suppose a bit of judgment on issues would be good, but difficult in a live game. Either way, the person that CDs getting banned from play is brilliant, I'm all for banning drop-outs in this context, dropping out is extremely selfish and ruins the game for all invovled, which is how I view unintentional NMRs as well, though I may be a bit extreme on this topic.
Geofram (130 D(B))
30 Nov 11 UTC
Right. I feel this effort should promote collaboration between players that don't CD and weed out players that do without trying to impose subjective rules.
It's as simple as saying "hey everybody, in this game _____ happened" and leave it at that.
MadMarx (36299 D(G))
30 Nov 11 UTC
Geo, it may seem simple to you, and maybe it will to Balaran, but the default should be to follow the rules as they are and if you don't like it don't play and/or try to discuss changing the rules (as it appears you are doing), right? Sorting through a bunch of subjective rules takes time, just like with an intentional NMR rule, so if this is Balaran's deal and he doesn't want to do it, that's how it is. So, personally, I think it's perfectly reasonable to ban NMRs, even intentional ones, and if people don't like that, don't play. That sort of stance may result in nobody playing, which may then result in change, but it may also find tens or hundreds of people that are willing to give up intentional NMRs in order to play games without NMRs and CDs.
virtuslatin (130 D)
30 Nov 11 UTC
Geo, if you look at pages 2-3 of this thread, your point regarding the 1-centre CD was discussed. More generally, I appreciate--even agree with--most of your comments. But you and I are free to do that--just play and comment. And Balaran is free to do this--organize, review, and ban.

Why not let him go on trying to organize games with these rules without clouding the thread, while you go on trying to organize your games under your own perogatives?

Right now, I am relatively new on this site, so I dont have knowledge of players established reputations. And I prefer anon games, so I wouldnt know the reputations anyways. And I am too new to be invited to select games, so like this as a way of trying to get a rep without having to suffer through a multiple CD game (one of my survives is a game where five other powers CDed, but the sixth was able to keep me surrounded as he went for the win).
virtuslatin (130 D)
30 Nov 11 UTC
Two quick additional points: First, @MadMarx, my understanding is that a one turn NMR is fine. A two turn NMR is unclear. A CD is what results in the ban.

Second, @Geo, your point about subjective rules is exactly what inspired the draw regardless of situation. The determination of whether a CD affects a game is subjective. Thus, in order to get all players to put in their votes, the rule has to be blanket. Admittedly, it is somewhat unlikely that a 1 unit France CD in Brest would affect a 17 unit Turkey's solo. But imagine the same situation with a one unit France in Burgundy affecting the support for Munich. Or if Turkey is only at 15 centers--France could get to Burgundy in time. In all, you need a black and white rule with no shades of grey.

And your claim that there are a bunch of subjective rules is somewhat specious--there is only one rule: CD=ban and draw. The additional element of reviewing previous resign history is neither a rule, nor bad--it is what helps make sure the games function.

nm-- I see it was marx's point about subjectivity. But the point is a good one.

So, anyone interested in a 5EST/10GMT game today?
Balaran (0 DX)

Ok sorry i have been offline a while i had an overnight trip to London to see a favourite band. Many thanks as usual to those making constructive comments and thanks to Virtuslatin for trying to get a game going yesterday in my absense.

Can I just confirm that there is no rule concerning NMR at all just a rule concerning CD which I think is clear. As far as I can work out Geo and Sarg's main critisism of this club is that only I am creating games, and that no one else is aloud. If you read back through this thread you will find a number of posts from me looking for others to help organise games whilst I am offline. I asked Geofram if he would like to help! Virtuslatin has kindly volunteered I would like a few others who are willing to get games going too, (particularly someone from USA / Canada. The job just involves posting the game in this thread and collecting participants who understand the club rules.

If it becomes a freee for all like Sarg and Geo wanted then no one will be there to check the players know the rules etc.

We only have 2 players on the banned list so far, and we have had a number of games that have started (with no CD's)
