How much radiation is a Sievert? Here's a simple radiation chart (from XKCD)
Most of you know XKCD, so you know this is well worth reading: http://blog.xkcd.com/2011/03/19/radiation-chart/
The full size chart is here: http://xkcd.com/radiation/
Be sure to read the disclaimer at the bottom of the chart.

Since diplomacy players are naturally smart...
Can anyone explain to me in practical terms why anything raised to the power of zero is equal to one? I understand that it's very convenient for algebraic reasons, and I kind of understand the logic and reasoning behind it, but I still can't get rid of the idea that, since 2^5 is defined as 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2, that 2^0 should have no definition because there are no numbers actually involved in it. I would have thought that it would fall into the category of zero denominators as non-real...

Champ Tourney ruined by lack of Internet Access-Request Rewind
http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=48367&msgCountryID=0

Can a Mod please check into the game? Austria's internet went down and he NMR'd, throwing the game to France. Any way we can have some sort of rewind or do-over? If this was an ordinary game, then oh well, shit happens. But this is supposed to be the Championship Tournament. Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

Community College Students: "A Parasite!" Reactions?
http://www.kfiam640.com/mediaplayer/?station=KFI-AM&action=ondemand&item=20955349&feed_name=JohnandKen.xml

As a community college student...well, these folks are Right-of-the-Right Wing, and they CERTAINLY have some points which infuriate me, but I'll admit, they DO have one point I agree with...and it goes for ALL students...

Spirit of the game, or cheating?
In the spirit of ftf games, where spying is encouraged, and in postal games, where faking a letter from one person and sending a copy to another is fair play, what do you think of using technology to gather information?

Is this a legitimate tactic?
I was in a high stakes, 3 days/turn game playing France and I kinda figured from some comments made that England was probably at the same college as me so I started staking out the computer labs to see if I could find out who it was.

@Rancher- just ignore the kid.

@fuzzy- it's about time you realize that in life people are going to offend you, but you asking them nicely will not change the fact and they will say it to you again and again- especially on the internet- learn to ignore people and statements that you deem offensive
largeham (149 D)

What's a faget? It sounds like a cheese or a piece of clothing.

@Sargmacher

Was it that philosopher Adorno?
pastoralan (100 D)
02 Mar 11 UTC
@mr.crispy: you are awesome (I was so sure Adorno was wrong that I looked him up).

There is nothing in the Bible to suggest that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute. The Bible only says that Jesus cast out seven demons from her. The whole prostitute thing is a legend with no basis in any kind of history, even if you take the Bible as a totally accurate account.

Let me see if I get this right (not having read the entire thread):

Someone offended Fuzzy, and he doesn't like that, so in turn he uses a term ('fagot') which is offensive to others. Hmmm. Why didn't you use the "N" word in addition to "fagot" so that you could offend additional people, Fuzzy?
Indybroughton (3407 D(G))

Draug, I work for a tampon manufacturer and am personally offended that you find "used tampon" to be a pajorative expression :)

Sargmacher (0 DX)
02 Mar 11 UTC
@rancher: Thanks for joining in! That troll was so annoying and had no other reason for his argument other then, basically, that you can't talk about Jesus because he is, well, Jesus. Just as scary as Islamic fundamentalism, that is - only America has so many more nukes.

@mr.crispy - Yes :). Adorno! You're up!

Sargmacher (0 DX)
02 Mar 11 UTC
Was he a writer? Possibly a Romantic?
pastoralan (100 D)
03 Mar 11 UTC
A good Romantic dies young--or at least before 100. And this guy is too old--German romanticism is late 1700s. This guy is German enlightenment.

The only German enlightenment figure I can think of is Kant, and I'm sure he didn't live that long. But it's a start.
Sargmacher (0 DX)
03 Mar 11 UTC
German Romanticism is late 1700s to around 1820.
Sargmacher (0 DX)
03 Mar 11 UTC
And Eichendorff lived to 1857.
Sargmacher (0 DX)
03 Mar 11 UTC
I had thought Kant as well, but he definitely wasn't 100 when he died. He died just after the turn of the century.
I don't think Bach or Handel lived that long either. In fact, I don't know anyone who lived 100 years in that time
Sargmacher (0 DX)
03 Mar 11 UTC
Yeah. It's a rare feat for someone in that age - surely a famous centenarian would be easier for us to guess - have you got your years confused, crispy?
Sargmacher (0 DX)
03 Mar 11 UTC
Kant was 1724-1804, did you mean that?

My bracket dreams are already broken
This forum post contains no insightful comments, philosophical points or deep strategy tips on MAO. I am wasting the community's collective time to say that, with less than two days of the NCAA men's basketball tournament under our belts, my bracket is already a hopeless shambles. For the sixth time in six years I am on track to lose to my in-laws in our little pool. It is a really good thing that I don't have a sports gambling addiction . . .
