2011 Masters, Temporary Sub needed
I have a player that will be out for a month of the tournament, but would like to continue after that. Would anyone be willing to take over his games until he comes back? Otherwise I will have to replace him. Let me know, here or email me to [email protected]. Thanks!

longest games
Hi, I'm a player in Wittlesbach Interruption and we are on Spring 1916. Since I've started playing online Diplomacy I've noticed most games end around 1907 give or take a year. We're at 1916 and the leading player has only 11 SC. We are also on our third leader in this game. Anyone else play a very long game?

Regular reports of cheaters in games posted on the forum
Here's a little bit of advice for all the new / inexperienced guys out there. If you do your homework before or at the start of a game, you don't have to worry about joining these types of games becoming a problem. What I mean by "doing your homework" is to check the profile of the guys with whom you're playing (so long as it isn't an anonymous game). Here are some things on what to look for:

did the zero SC survive get fixed or do you have to have a unit to get it?
I just took a nations last SC for the win, but they got eliminated. I physically took it in the spring forcing a disband so I'm guessing you either have to have a unit to get the survive or the problem was fixed.

@Trip - cheers for that
With respect to saving instead of finalizing, I think it is fair to do it to an extent. I mean, sometimes I think of my moves and input them but would rather wait until I double check them the next day with fresh eyes before I finalize. I am committed to finalizing when I am ready, but not until then.

The quality of game has been great so far but I wouldn't want people to start rushing their orders for fear of being penalized. But I also agree that maybe some games could be going faster than they are.

trip (696 D(B))
06 Dec 10 UTC
I don't want people to rush moves, and I wouldn't dock points if theyre not finalizing every so often when its obvious there's tough choices to make, or someone is waiting to see if another player votes for a draw. Only if its all the time.

I'm with Lando & Barn3tt, next round should be 24hrs. I say retreats & builds should finalize
as quick as possible, but when things get into middle game I don't have a problem with
taking a little extra time. 24 phase should not take that long.

How does Sum of Squares work?
ava2790 (232 D(S))
07 Dec 10 UTC
Sum of squares works as follows:

1. At the end of the game, each player's SC count is taken.
2. Each player's SC count is then squared.
3. The squares of each players' SC counts are added together (this is the sum of squares).
4. Each individual *squared* SC count is divided by the sum of squares to get a score out of 100.
5. If there is a solo, the winner gets 100 and everyone else gets 0.

This system rewards board tops that split the remaining centers between a greater number of opponents.

Example:

England 9 (square = 81)
France 8 (square = 64)
Germany 0 (square = 0)
Italy 0 (square = 0)
Austria 9 (square = 81)
Turkey 8 (square = 64)
Russia 0 (square = 0)

Sum of square is 290. Then the scores become

England 81/290 = 27.93 %
France 64/290 = 22.06 %
Germany 0/290 = 0%
Italy 0
Austria 81/290 = 27.93 %
Turkey 64/290 = 22.06 %
Russia 0

Now in this example they all ended up at around the same score since they had the same number of SCs (almost). Next example:

England 15 (square = 225)
France 3 (square = 9)
Germany 1 (square = 1)
Italy 9 (square = 81)
Austria 0 (square = 0)
Turkey 5 (square = 25)
Russia 1 (square = 1)

Sum of square is 342. Then the scores become

England 225/342 = 65.78 %
France 9/342 = 2.63 %
Germany 1/342 = 0.29 %
Italy 81/342 = 23.68 %
Austria 0/342 = 0 %
Turkey 25/342 = 7.3 %
Russia 1/342 = 0.29%
Are we using that scoring method at all in this tournament?
gramilaj (100 D)
07 Dec 10 UTC
Sum of Squares rewards the top scoring player for keeping minor powers in the game and rewards anyone lower than 1st (generally) for knocking out minor powers.
TBroadley (178 D)
07 Dec 10 UTC
Then what's the point of the original scoring system? The one with 14/x points for an x-way draw?
trip (696 D(B))
07 Dec 10 UTC
We aren't using sos. Was just test driving it on the side to see if its something id like to do for future tourneys.
gramilaj (100 D)
07 Dec 10 UTC
Sum of Squares is fun system, I don't think we're using it for this, but it's a nice idea for future tournies. My only problem with it is that it encourages minor powers to do some wonky things.
Barn3tt (41969 D)
07 Dec 10 UTC
I'm not sure how I like the Sum of Squares. On the one hand, it seems fair to me that a player with 1 center and gets in on the draw should not receive as much points as a 9 center empire. However, if two middling empires prevent a solo (say 10 centers and 7 centers). It doesn't strike me as fare that the 10 center country would get almost twice as many points.

Just for clarification, this is the current scoring system:

Scoring
12 point must
Solo = 12
Draw = 12/participants

Tie Breakers (in order)
Solos
2WayDraws
3WDs
4WDs
5WDs
6WDs
7WDs
Total Centers (solos & draws)
Most Centers in One Game
Less Solos allowed
Ranking
Barn3tt (41969 D)
07 Dec 10 UTC
excuse me, the 10 center empire would get a little more than twice as many points as his 7 center comrade.
gramilaj (100 D)
07 Dec 10 UTC
But I feel that's an exciting part of SOS, it encourages some small stabs, if you think you can pull them off and still hold the line.
trip (696 D(B))
07 Dec 10 UTC
Congrats Gonna and IKE. See you guys in round 2.
Hope to see you too TBroadley.

doofman (201 D)
07 Dec 10 UTC
That's what I was thinking ava.. went for the draw too soon
trip (696 D(B))
07 Dec 10 UTC
I voted to draw because I couldn't do worse than second place. Would have been my first classic gunboat solo if I pulled it off. If it was the finals I absolutely would have gone for it. First two rounds are all about advancing.
IKE (3845 D)
07 Dec 10 UTC
Yes, I thought after that defeat as Russia I was done. Making it to the next round by the seat of my pants. Seems we will have some time off waiting for group D. Shoot me a pm when we are ready for round 2.
