question one refers to american neighbourhood. Should I answer no becaue I have never lived in America?
Tolstoy (1962 D)

50. I would agree that the test is silly. Younger people who have not had a lot of life experiences are going to score artificially low, for instance.
How the fuck do I answer #8 if I'm not liberal or conservative? The writers can spend all this time thinking of a quiz about how to test my white privilege but can't be bothered to break the hilariously stupid left-right paradigm that's been exposed for the statism-statism "paradigm" sham it is? Come on.

I scored 12, trying my best to apply the questions to Canada, but they were really directed at americans/
Also, the number of completely unwarranted and rude assumptions and phrasings throughout this quiz is alarming. This is horribly unprofessional.

Like this:

"I use this question as a way of getting at the question I would like to ask, "Have you ever had a close friend who would have scored below the national average on an IQ test?" I can't ask that question, because readers who grew up in an upper-middle-class neighborhood or went to school with the children of the upper middle class have no way of knowing what average means."

It's incredibly insulting to act like all upper-middle-class people have their heads so far up their asses that they don't even know the IQ test's average score is 100. PBS should be ashamed for the unprofessional "journalism" this quiz is supposed to represent. It's doubly disappointing because they're touching on a topic which tends to piss people off for no good reason and requires careful word use to get people to even engage on the subject at all, and they go ahead and flippantly throw around serious accusations about the worldview of the target audience, with such brusque claims as saying that "upper-middle-class children can't know what average is" without bothering to check if the assumptions they made to get to those accusations are even remotely logical.

I scored 25 while not applying the questions to the Czech Republic.
Or hell, question 11, asking about military rank insignia. The implication of the question, as mentioned in the explanation of it, is that most American neighborhoods have military veterans, and that if yours doesn't, you probably live in a privileged bubble. Never mind that some poor and unprivileged neighborhoods don't have military veterans, the method of testing whether you had veterans is to ask you if you can identify five insignia.

What the actual fuck? How does that relate *at all* to how many military personnel live in your neighborhood?

I was also mystified by the question about living in towns of less than 50,000. Vast numbers of Americans live in towns of less than 50,000, and vast numbers live in cities of more. Which of those is supposed to be a "bubble"?

Well, I take it the towns are. OK, then. I'm not sure why, but then, anybody living in a small town is going to start getting bubblish answers in a lot of the later questions. A lot of rural people don't have as easy access to TV or movies. I lived for 11 years in a town whose nearest movie theater was over 60 miles away. Gee, I guess I didn't see a lot of last year's top ten movies, did I? So now I AM in a bubble?
"Have you or your spouse ever purchased a pickup truck?"

Implication: Only REAL Uhmurkans buy pickup trucks. If you don't then you're a spoiled brat.

Refutation: I've never had enough money to buy a pickup truck.
I think the population-town question is implying that rural folks are in a bubble, which would be consistent with those later ones.

That in and of itself is correct, but the freaking URL reads: "White, Educated and Wealthy? Congratulations, You Live in a Bubble."

If the aim is to target white privilege, how the hell does singling out poor farmers in a rural bubble that's *less* prosperous than city life make any sense?

The national IQ average of the US is not 100. You don't have to watch a movie in a cinema, you can watch it from a DVD (or internet, although the question doesn't state it).

Oh goodie, the beer one.

Implication: If you don't buy domestic mass-market beer then you're a snobby rick prick.

Refutation: I'm 20. It's illegal for me to buy any beer. And furthermore I don't (and won't when legal) actually drink any alcohol.
@ulytau: The target for "average" IQ is supposed to be 100. The point they're getting at is that apparently all well-to-do children in their fancy-pants special schools make fun of people scoring "only" 115ish on the IQ - which would be relatively low for the school - when in reality they're "above average."
ulytau (541 D)
13 Apr 12 UTC
Also it's not even a test you're supposed to take. It's for adult Americans with their own families and what not and how they fare against various "average" measures.
"During the last year, have you or your spouse gone fishing?"

Nope. Don't have a boat or ready access to water which actually has fish that haven't been polluted to death in it. WHITE PRIVILEGE FUCK YEAH

I guess, PE, but as it states, in the 2000 census, it applied to 48% of the population. Which part is in a bubble -- the 48% or the 52%?

ulytau, true, but believe it or not, even DVDs were hard to come by. Movie rental places went out of business a lot, and were probably in existence about half the time overall. Any top-10 movie is top-10 because it's one of the easiest and best movies to see _in the theater_. If you can't see it in the theater and are going to watch a DVD, the choice opens up a great deal and there's little reason to expect even the most blue-collar to have the same top-10 at that point.
Even removing those, then, ulytau, the quiz still makes an enormous number of absolutely baseless assumptions and is rather patronizing and insulting to people who don't fit their stereotype of the "privileged" person (based on their questions) but still end up answering the "privileged" answer.

I'm not saying I'm not privileged, even - I know I am - but the "logic" used in this quiz is absolutely terrible, and in creating such a terrible quiz the makers of the quiz are undermining their ability to get privileged people to wake up and realize their position in society. It would be incredibly easy for me, if I didn't know otherwise, to laugh this shoddy excuse off and continue thinking I'm not privileged. That's the *last* thing this quiz should be doing.
semck83 (229 D(B))

I present my much easier, quicker white-privilege quiz:

1) Are you white?

a) Yes
b) No.

2) Do you spend time online discussing PBS quizzes and your white guilt with other people who play a time-consuming seven-player board game?

a) Yes
b) No.

Congratulations -- if you answered Yes to both, then you do in fact exhibit white privilege. (If you answered yes only to 2., you still exhibit privilege. Also, you should see a psychiatrist about having white guilt when you are not actually white).

I'm sure some of you recall the embarrassing moments thread we had a few weeks ago? Well I have searched by google and by rote reading, page by page, and not found it. Neither did abgemacht, the sweetheart that he is, when he went searching. Any help locating it would be appreciated. I do not recall who started the thread.
