Election time
So, it's election time in Ontario on Thursday (but more importantly the start of Hockey) and I'm embarrassingly uninformed so I'm spending today doing a bit of research. Any two cents from my fellow Ontarians?

Pick one team to win straight up each week. You can't pick the same team more than once. Lose and you're out. PM me your pick by 12:30pm Sunday Toronto time, I'll cut off the picks at that time, and post a list. Good luck.

A suggestion for Kestas:
I think that we should have a record of how many people (But not their identity of course) have muted that person on their profile. It would have a similar reasoning to that of the +1 button, in order for users to see what sort of behaviour is and isn't accepted by the community to promote self-moderation.

Did you go to the link Rugrat? "We" refers to the community at this site, dedicated to this site, and appreciative of all the effort Kestas has put in to develop the best online Diplomacy software out there: the software that drives both sites.
Rugrat (100 D)

I had no idea about any of that. Thanks for the info. I thought it was an inter -site rivalery. I do respect all that Kestas has done. I think that play diplomacy got screwed by the Rumanian programmers. Until playdip changed to a different group, you could tell the programmer he had didn't know what he was doing.
Wait, did playdip get shut down?

loooooooooooool
well then, just read that link and i'm a little annoyed. I had no idea. Still, i am in the middle of a couple of games there, and i want to finish them, Damnit.

after reading the link, i have to say that i'm a bit disappointed that i chose playdiplomacy for my first game in years. nonetheless, i'm with marti, in that i can't help but feel frustrated that the game has seemingly gone 'poof'! very disappointing. the fact that volo media and scratchix are also experiencing 'server problems' does not bode well for a return of that site. a big thank you to kestas regardless.
spyman (424 D(G))

That is odd. playdiplomacy has vanished. Weird. Its probably just temporary... but maybe the site creator just found it too expensive to run?

It would really interesting if they did all migrate here. It would double the size of this community overnight. Purely speculative of course, playdiplomacy has been down before for days on end. The admin is probably on holiday (I recall that is what happened sometime back when it went down during a period when I tried it out).

It's a small point, but paying on playdip is optional. They do have free gaming.
I don't see a lot of them coming over here when they see how hostile this site is torwards playdip.
spyman (424 D(G))
29 Sep 11 UTC
The hostility is unfortunate, unnecessary, and unbecoming. Peope should let it go. The issues peope ate bringing up happened a long time ago.

People who play on playdip =/= playdip. I do hope they (or at least their top players) come here if playdip goes bust.

Let me preface by saying that I don't have a dog in this fight, and I clearly do not know all of the sorted details. I only seek to understand. And to find a good place to play diplomacy online. So please be kind and tolerant of my naivety in any responses you care to give.

Steal Code? Do you mean playdiplomacy.com stole code? -- I thought it was FYB that stole the code and sold it to playdiplomacy.com. From my read of the story, it seems that FYB behaved in a grossly unethical manner, but that playdiplomacy.com was (at least initially) one of their victims. It also appears there was some acrimony between some of FYB's victims (playdiplomacy.com and Kestas) as they tried to clean up the mess, with some regrettable behavior on both sides (though perhaps a bit more behavior and a bit less regret on the part of playdiplomacy.com). Perhaps I am missing something, but did the playdiplomacy.com folks do something particularly egregious here, other than being slow and obstinant in pulling their head out of the sand of denial? If my read of things is correct, then it is curious (painfully so) that playdiplomacy.com did not hire Kestas for subsequent improvements -- that piece of FYB's legacy hurts all of us.

I have enjoyed playdiplomacy.com (though presently MIA for the past few days), giving them my two bits each year. If there is something in my read of the story that is way off base, please help me get to a more realistic sense of what happened.

And in spite of all the code-stealing uglyness, and with all respect to kestas' amazing work, I prefer playdip's innovation with regards to the game itself (ability to choose countries or set preference lists, interesting variants, beautiful interface, ability to send message to multiple countries at once, auto-NMR in 1901 game cancellation, etc.) than webdip's mainly forum-based developments.
spyman (424 D(G))

There was some bad blood a long time ago because playdiplomacy were slow at crediting Kestas (until he called them out). And playdiplomacy was clearly in the wrong. But that is sorted now. I find it embarrassing that peope still bring it up. It makes us webdiplomacy people look bad by harping on about it.

Spyman, people are still bitter at Ralph Nader over the 2000 election, you don't seriously expect people to be mature when its far easier to mock The Other, do you?

I agree with spyman. Let it go. We are all here because we like playing the game. It is unfortunate that Kestas was ripped off. The way I read things in that post it was discussed and they settled the matter.

Here is a guess about why playdiplomacy.com is down: About 1-2 weeks ago, they implemented an auto-disband feature for units that had no legal disband options. I have noticed some wierdness in the adjudication on that site starting at about that time. I attributed that wierdness to the fact that most of my games are Fog of War, in which you cannot see all of the pieces and provinces and cannot pull up a history of the orders. Anyway, I suspected that the innovative feature was buggy and having some unintended consequences. When playdiplomacy.com went down, my confidence in my suspicions increased. But that's just a guess.

Regarding the bad blood . . . my sympathies go to Kestas. After reading the story more than a year ago, I tried to bring this up on a forum on playdiplomacy.com. Folks there were generally non-responsive and I got only minimal answers to my questions. My read of the story left me thinking it was a case of crime victims turning on each other. I questioned (and still do) whether my patronizing of playdiplomacy.com is a further injury to Kestas.

I am from Playdip. I just came here yesterday, and your 5 min turn games were quite fun for me. Such a thing is not possible over there, so I enjoyed it.

there are a few things over there I like better (mentioned earlier), but I just want to play the game, thats all. Had I know about this site earlier, I would have played on both sites, but losing that one, made me look for another.

I dont think any players over there, or very few have any real knowledge (much less a stake) in the events of the past. We are just Dip players

I am a refugee from PlayDip too, just joined a surrendered Germany, lets see how it goes. As stressed said, we just like playing the game. Dont understand the point system here and am still trying to see which of my units are where, they are all the same colour.

Cheers
Stressedlines (1559 D)

Stvr The points, are like currency sort of. Join a game, and it costs X amount of coins (or wahtever they are) and depending on how the game ends, you get all, some or none of the coins.

It was one thing about the 5 min games I enjoyed a lot. Three games (dont try to play more than one at a time like I did...it will test you a lot...lol) and I got a solo, and part of two draws. I joined a vacant carthage game also, and Turkey in another.

So far, it seems pretty good. I dont like the randomness of choosing countries, as over on Playdip I would often play Austria, as I play an excellent Austria, and always got them (everyone else hates them almost).

However, I just like to play the game....Nothing else.
